Yes he has done various talkshow appearances. I'm as surprised as anyone that his fanbase hasn't proved to be much larger. I don't really know how WOM is –– the reviews were pretty kind, and if you're a Crystal fan you'll probably have a pretty good time, even if the musical on a whole isn't great. The ad campaign is not great and the early TV spots were kind of lame.

Considering the subject matter, the R-rated language and the graphic gay sex live on stage, are you surprised? I liked it enough but the night I saw it, it felt like at least a dozen straight middle aged and older couples walked right out the door before the halfway mark.

Re: STRANGE LOOP, besides being a genuinely challenging and distinctly adult show, we’re also not in a year when I think that direct comparisons to other Best Musical winners is quite possible. There’s still the Covid of it all which I think has SOME
impact on locals attending, and this is 100% a show with a hometown audience, not tourists. My gut says that it doesn’t run as long as other winners have but it still recoups. Also, I just adore the show and think Broadway is better for having it.

On the one hand, I can imagine that it would not be the first show that people would think to watch on a holiday week-end.
However, as a viewer of the Tony’s who has not seen the show, the chosen number did it no favors. Despite the reviews, I have zero interest in seeing it. Had I liked the Tony number, my interest would likely have been piqued.
I suspect this is another of those shows that appeals to avid theatre goers, but has limited appeal to occasional theatre goers. Think A Band’s Visit, Fun Home, Passion, and perhaps acclaimed nominees such as The Visit and The Scottsboro Boys.
I have no doubt that it will be around for another 6 months, but will not have the classic ‘best musical’ run.
On a separate note, really disappointed with Moulin Rouge direction. Year-end close???? Such a shame.

A reminder FUN HOME's recoupment was not a foregone conclusion, even after its win. It was surprising to many it had a healthy run given its subject matter, not to mention it's more intimate, less splashy approach.
And ultimately it was a testament to some great producing.
I hope LOOP has a long run, but anyone that tells you it won't be a challenge is kidding themselves or you.

Probably the fact it got government money and, since it’s closing on the 24th, has no incentive to shut down at this point"
What government money?

We live in different, post-pandemic times. Could very well that the Best Musical Tony is not a guarantee this time around, yet it has pretty good statistics to back it up.

I think A STRANGE LOOP will have a short run(2 years?). It doesn't appeal to families or an older generation. Oddly similar to FUN HOME & THE BAND'S VISIT.

I mean, A Strange Loop is probably the toughest sell out of all the past winners. It's hard to explain and the title/artwork don't really entice. And it got great reviews, but maybe the general word-of-mouth isn't so great? It's still doing well, so I think it's fine for awhile.
I think Book of Mormon has run its course.

The Book of Mormon is still far from having run its course. They had two weeks this year so far where the average ticket price dipped below $100, and only six weeks where their attendance went below 90% (and still stayed above 80%). While you may no longer need to book tickets months in advance or be forced to shell out for premium tickets, they can easily run for years still doing the same sort of business as other long-runners like Phantom and Chicago using the spikes from the high tourist weeks to coast through the lower ones.

Probably the pandemic money. Assuming the show received any, that money was required to have been spent to prior to Dec. 31, 2021 (with limited exceptions). It wasn't meant to help struggling shows survive, it was meant to help shows get back on their feet after such and extended closure.

I've heard the Lyceum already has its next tenant(s). (One is a holiday show, so I'm not sure of the reliability of it).

Really? I wasn't aware of that caveat. I assumed this whole time that both Hangmen and The Minutes were relying on that money, as both of them definitely would've been eligible for it. In fact, I recall someone on this board reporting that Hangmen WAS listed on some document of shows that they received the money, and this came out before they even announced their return. It was their SVOG money that tipped us off that they planned to return in the first place. Consequently, I assumed that Hangmen wouldn't have returned without it, because they had announced initially that they were closed for good.
I know we're talking about The Minutes here, not Hangmen, but the reason I bring it up is that Hangmen, like The Minutes, didn't return until 2022. Meaning if Hangmen was able to use it after the new year, it would make sense if The Minutes could too.
