Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/16/26

Big plummet as expected, summer's over and more and more schools are coming back.

That's a decent start for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.

Happy trails to Jasmine Forsberg, Abigail Barlow, Mark Ballas, Krysta Rodriguez, and RAGTIME which set one final record at the Beaumont. Shoutout as well to Miles McNicoll (SCHMIGADOON!) who finished his run and is heading back to school, and JUST IN TIME production stage manager Scott Rowen.

Glad to see that BVSC ended up doing well from their dance a long performance this week. (While attendance was down, they did make a little more cash.)

I'm surprised RAGTIME didn't announce whether or not they recouped their investment...especially considering they were pretty much sold out for the entirety of the run. Is that even allowed for LCT because it's a non-profit?

Jeez, I don't think anything can re-coup at this rate. so the 80% recoupment failure rate's gotta be higher now right?

Re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/16/26

It's too big with its cast size and orchestra etc etc.

It could recoup on tour but that's also very very unlikely. It could, and likely will, lose money on tour. The LCT Theater production relied on Henry and Levy's performances. Without that and the aura of it being at Lincoln Center - it's a below average production of the show, with bland direction. You can see similar at a regional theater.

Friendly reminder that this production won Best Musical Revival, and barely any of the thoughts that come to your head are true. You specifically.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Risking my neck here, but Giants isn’t entirely wrong. I always hung my hat on the fact that Joshua Henry was literally the only part of this production that stood out as memorable for me and the only time it came alive. The rest just felt like a diorama with a full orchestra. The direction felt aimless and dragged the show’s pacing.

Back to the topic at hand, we are indeed in the dog days of summer. I’m surprised we haven’t heard any more closing announcements coming down, which might seem to me like some theatre owners are being a bit more charitable than normal with their stop clauses, but who knows?

Friendly reminder that awards are not always indications of quality and plenty of undeserving parties win awards, Tonys or otherwise, every year.

And winning Best Revival from the same voters that deemed Sh*ttydoon Best Musical is hardly something to crow about.

I also was whelmed by the direction and production of Ragtime in comparison to the two Broadway productions that came before. The cast was spectacular but I'm not sure how it will play without them on tour.

here’s hoping Lear DeBessonet can step up her game for Sound of Music in the spring, especially when it comes to the set!

Maybe Happy Ending must be considering a close. It's not making money with its weekly (usually highly underestimated). With the tour coming, they should pack up and take what they can use.

The impressions I get of the landlords make it seem like they'd never ease up... might be more the case of a thin pipeline and the belief that it's better to have shows losing money weekly, rather than nothing at all. Following JELLICLE's closing, social media is pinning the blame on the Big Three and painting them as stereotypical "Biblical greed, mwahaha" mustache-twirling villains.

I haven't ever met the execs that call the shots in person though.

One could hope, but that still won't help her as a director. Cast, creatives and production on her shows usually discuss, quietly, her inabilities and genuine luck.

Re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/16/26

Maybe Happy Ending and Two Strangers have been be making a closing announcement soon. Two great shows but they must have been losing money all summer.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The stop clause is almost never enforced. The theatre owners do not lose money as long as the show is running. It's the production itself that loses.

When Ron Fassler was on The Broadway Radio Show a few months ago discussing Tony predictions, he mentioned how he felt deBessonet's direction of Ragtime was much better than what people were giving her credit for. Although he personally wasn't a fan of Cats: The Jellicle Ball.
