Olympics stealing the attention these days?
That’s now seven straight box office records for The Outsiders.
Decent start for Mattress, especially given how quickly this all came together.
I was thinking back to school could also be part of the reason. There are a few schools already back but it is back to school time. Just my thoughts.
Not a great week! First week of August is still prime vacation time, if not peak vacation time.
I know we say this every week but NOTEBOOK and SUFFS' numbers are increasingly worrisome, despite Notebook recently extending through end of year and some people's belief that the election will help Suffs (which I do not think will matter at all...now's the time when we should be seeing a bump for Suffs, with Dems more locked in than we have been in the past year+ and lots of tourists in town)
As for MATTRESS, a decent start shouldn't be scoffed at, but do remember that revivals catering to theatre folk are frequently frontloaded in the first 4 weeks (such as Carousel 2018.
NYC in August is soupy and gross. And no, 99% of public schools are not back in session yet. People are going places far more comfortable like the beach, I imagine. And the headlines (even in non rags like the New York Times) are not helping, unfortunately.
Congratulations to The Outsiders tho, what a monster hit!
The grosses for this week are probably going to be terrible considering tropical storm Debby is planting herself over the Mid-Atlantic for the next four days.

They sad a "few" schools. Not sure where you are getting 99%?

I mean, it’s only a limited run that ends in November before going to LA, so it’s not like we’re trying to gauge long term success.
Carousel also had the burden of very polite but unenthusiastic reviews and the end of the run being marred by Amar Ramasar’s SA allegations
I've thought all summer that The Notebook would be the next to close but I'm starting to wonder if it'll be Water For Elephants. Notebook isn't doing great but it's been mostly holding steady whereas Elephants seems on more of a downward trend. I also think Notebook probably gets less summer vacation/tourist business. Obviously both will not be around past January but I'm starting to wonder if Notebook will hold on longer of the two.

I am thinking that WFE and BTTF are both looking pretty vulnerable. I do not know, but I assume their weekly nuts are a lot larger than Notebook and Suffs, which may not be correct. I wonder if Oh, Mary is going to extend a couple of months at a time or announce an open-ended engagement.
I continue to be be surprised by The Great Gatsby's grosses, given the horrible reviews it received. Maybe it is true that the best way to see this is to know or care nothing about the novel on which it is theoretically based.

I interpreted the rather pithy extension to December for NOTEBOOK as their quiet way of saying they will close before the year is out. I could EASILY see W4E folding before then. With Grant Gusting leaving and no announcement of replacement casting, along with softening grosses, I have a feeling September is the end of the track for them.

Re: W4E, isn't Smash in talks to take the Imperial in the Spring? I may have made that up-that's what I thought the latest rumor was.
W4E & SUFFS are both more expensive to run with decreasing numbers.
Notebook has lower numbers but cheaper to run. The fall & Jan will be interesting.
I think given the current world of politics and the fact that its grosses haven't cratered in a huge way, Suffs is absolutely going to try to make it through Election Day at minimum. It won't be a Sep closing.
Didn't want to create a new thread for this, but here's a funny impression of theatre box office staff that I ran across on TikTok:

Oh yes, that was their plan all along but now things have completely changed in this election, it's even more crucial and important. I'm here right now and everyone is going crazy. Love 💜

If anything, the closing notice will come shortly after a President-elect is named. As I have said before, the casuals may very well surmise that the show solely existed as political propaganda for everyone to get out there and vote.
Lolz. You think everything is closing mmediately. You have been waiting for &Juliet to close for years. You think everytime there are flurries that don't even stick that BROADWAY WILL BE SHUT DOWN FOR WEEKS. I'm so glad people call you out on it, Mr Doom and Gloom. So, NOPE.

Water for elephants is holding auditions so it seems like it’s gonna run past September
