I mean it worked in bigger spaces on its mini tour. It would be chilling in the intimate Booth.

Hopefully they will see that they have done well with romantic comedies (Mamma Mia, Juliet, MHE, and 2 Strangers) and smart budgets under 20 million and shy away from these dreary serious expensive shows.

Two things can be true. The Shuberts decisions created a drought of new musicals this season. They're only concerned with money. Thank Gosh next season already looks more promising.
I'm fascinated and optimistic about the really positive word of mouth on Paranormal Activity. It feels like the last thirty years have had a series of serious attempts at honest-to-god horror in American theatre, but few have pulled it off before.
Closest I've ever seen was what I believe to be a non-replica production of The Humans at Pittsburgh Public Theatre. It was EXTREMELY horror oriented with multiple jumpscares and a very strong Mulholland Drive era David Lynch feel. (When I saw the movie, I was surprised at how it lacked any horror elements whatsoever; could that have purely been a creation of this production?)

I definitely felt that the Broadway production had a strong element of psychological horror, muted throughout most of the show but blossoming into a vivid nightmarescape near the end. I agree that this vibe is largely missing from the movie (which I still enjoyed).
Yeah, I would describe the original production of The Humans as having a sort of eerie, unsettling feeling, like when you're home alone late at night and suddenly aware of every shadow and noise.

I really don’t know, on one hand I do like the idea of more movies being adapted into plays instead of musicals. But on the other hand, the play is written by Levi Holloway who did GREY HOUSE, a horror show that really divided a lot of people
A few key things stand out to me here:
- The play really isn't an adaptation of the (I lost count of how many, LOL) films in the franchise - it's very much 'in the spirit of', mainly the vibes of the first one. But you don't have to have seen any of the Paranormal Activity films at all to enjoy the play, IMO.
- I feel like the secret sauce here is that it's Levi Holloway collaborating with Felix Barrett of Punchdrunk, who brings that sensibility to this, though unlike Sleep No More, there *are* overt scares throughout after the staging takes it time to establish the unsettling undertone. And the work of Chris Fisher, the illusion designer who also worked on Cursed Child and Stranger Things: The First Shadow can't be overstated - it's a pretty harmonious combo of talent.
I do hope the rumors of it coming in next season are true, as this has a lot in its favor to be successful and unlike anything we've seen in NY.
