Broadway Stars w/ less credits then you think

The inimitable Steven Pasquale. Four Broadway credits with only one being a musical. With that voice? WILD.

The classic example is Barbra Streisand, with only 2 Broadway credits. I also often think of Idina Menzel, who has 4 Broadway credits, 1 of which was as a replacement.


It’s funny to consider that there are some actors who are primarily known for film/tv - and not at all associated with Broadway in most people’s minds - who have way more stage credits than some people who are actually associated with stage work.

I think we’d see more people like Idina and Steven on Broadway more regularly if the schedule wasn’t so brutal. Once you start making TV and movie money and can do concerts where you can earn what you’d make in two weeks on Broadway in one night singing a set of songs, the allure is lost, especially if you’ve been there and done it.

Cynthia Erivo only having one credit, and I doubt she’ll ever do broadway again.



This isn’t really surprising, more of a tragedy. Carmen Cusack deserves to have more than 2 broadway credits. I guess that would’ve made Bright Star less special though.

Crazy to the point that I had to go to IBDB to make sure you weren't full of it. And 3/4 of his Broadway shows have all had the same lead producer.

I suspect that Pasquale is one of those actors who would have many more Broadway credits if he wanted to, but has chosen to focus primarily on TV/film. As someone mentioned earlier, that is where the money is.

Speaking of TV actors, is Sara Ramirez ever going to come back to Broadway?

Broadway is a subset of NYC theater, which is often far more exciting than what happens in the 41 commercial (except a few) theaters alone. Some of the celebrities mentioned in the thread do not do Broadway much, but their presence is palpably felt in the off-Broadway/NFP theater circle. I don't think Steven Pasquale's performances in, for example, Assassins and A Man of No Importance, were any less exciting than his in American Son or The Bridges of Madison County. Certainly, his decision to get involved in such projects did not come from the allure of TV/movie/concert money.

Jennifer Holiday - just 7 in the past 40+ years. Do producers not know who she is?

To be fair, Steven Pasquale was on Rescue Me (I think) for quite a long time which prevented him from doing a lot of things. I know he was attached to The Light in the Piazza out of town and then wasn't able to do the Broadway run, which is a real shame.

Lea Salonga has only been on Broadway five times with two of those times being replacement gigs in Les Miz. Her work in Manila is so extensive and it really feels like we've been robbed of her talents. She's been open about not being considered for roles on Broadway due to her race.
