Why are there so many empty theaters? Do producers not want to take a chance and open in the fall anymore? Why don’t we do limited engagement remounts of beloved shows like the west end? What goes on??

An inordinate amount of shows opened this summer (I think 8 or 9), and quite a few of the shows that closed (including past season shows) probably anticipating a longer run than they had (New York, New York, Bad Cinderella, Grey House, …One More Time).
I would’ve thought SOMETHING would’ve tried to fit in Studio 54 or the Longacre but I guess TIMES IS ‘ARD

Costs are much cheaper in the west end making it not only easier to mount but also more likely to recoup. I’m curious if A Christmas Story, The Grinch, or any other holiday show have recouped yet, even though they’ve been toured to death.

This season is weird. As was already said, there was a larger-than-usual number of shows that opened in the summer, and we're getting a barrage of announcements for the spring. But very little for the fall.
Just an interesting season.

Well keep in mind two are being renovated-the Palace and Majestic. So that at least accounts for two of them

I thought I read somewhere that Studio 54 was doing a smaller-scale reno this fall and that's why it's empty.
The Imperial is bigger, so maybe there just isn't anything that thinks it could fill it. Same definitely goes for Marquis (although I think a big part of that one is how late OUAOMT pulled the plug)
The Jacobs, Schoenfeld, Lyceum, Longacre, and Beaumont all being empty for the whole fall is surprising though.

At this rate can they just get some artists to do residences or some comedians? Surprised with the writer’s strike we really see any influx in star driven shows.

I think there's a very good chance that things go back to the way they were 2 decades ago and before. We're there aren't a bunch of shows backed up every season just waiting for a theatre to open. This is a relatively new thing ( about 20 years, or so) for Broadway.

You're looking at the glass half empty instead of seeing it half full.
I count 8 new shows opening for Fall.

As someone mentioned, West End theatre is cheaper to operate. It’s heavily funded by the UK government! I know first hand it’s way cheaper! The fact that I was able to se 19 shows in 6 weeks over there is way more than what I see on Broadway in an entire year! Yeah, there’s BIG DIFFERENCE there, Flash!

I feel like we have a lot of interesting Off Broadway shows this Fall so I'm not too concerned about lack of Broadway shows. I'll make sure to see the more limited stuff like Gutenberg though.
