So, in other words, you hated Liza.

Don't fret as Lea will not be cast as Sally in Cabaret! We'll see her in the other C show - CHESS

Clearly it's a directorial choice. Sally is constantly in hysterics so her character has nowhere to go. But the biggest wrong is the MC who is constantly angry. It destroys the illusion that as he says "In here, everything is beautiful". Well clearly it isn't, but there's no reason to tick off the audience. Even if they get Eddie Redmayne, he's no Alan Cumming who seduces the audience which is th obvious right choice. Also it feels padded. Act I runs almost an hour and 45 minutes. But theater is art and art is subjective. It's your money and that's my 2¢. Your mileage may vary. But I thought it was awful."
Wow. We had the complete opposite experience. I thought the production was spectacular, with such interesting choices made. It’s dark, sinister, and powerful.
I’m also think we need to wait to see Lea so anything other than Funny Girl. The event is that she’s in the role she has been vying for for so long. Will audiences care when she’s in something other than that? We shall see. And no I don’t think she is doing this. Chess makes more sense given the director and all that has been said. This revival seems to want to go a certain direction, and I don’t see Lea in that vision. I’ve yet to be convinced she’s a good actress.

a bit of both? it seems to be well established across the pond that they’ve been trying to get her to do this production*. however she’s allegedly declined for a variety of reasons mainly relating to having a young child. so her turning down a replacement gig which could be a much shorter commitment to take on the broadway opening doesn’t seem likely.
(*and apparently the production that played before this one tried to get her too)
Ok if Billie does this I’m 100% back on board. She would be tremendous
I'm still mad I missed her in Yerma. I'd love to see her live. She's tremendous. But sounds unlikely to leave her child to come across the pond.
Reached out to my industry friends and yes this is happening with Eddie but Sally has not been set yet. I love the idea of Michaela Diamond.

I saw it in London a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. I told a few people about it and they all loved the show.

Lea Michele as Sally Bowles is quite literally the definition of miscasting: Sally is supposed to be broken, sultry, wounded, and not all that vocally talented. Lea Michele has only ever shown us the opposite of all those things.
I have to say that with Eddie Redmayne as the big draw, might the producers reward us with a non-celeb Bway talent here? Or will they look to match his star power with a Name?
I have no idea who this Billie is yall are talking about, but the mind RUNS with ideas here. Zendaya. Andra Day. Vanessa Kirby. Sarah Snook. Amanda Seyfried. Cecily Strong.
Chloe Fineman LOOKS like a Sally Bowles, and her energy is very “what if you put all the past Sally actors in a blender.”

No idea if she has the stamina for the stage, but Rebecca Ferguson would be an astonishing Sally Bowles, I feel so sure about that. Never thought of it before, but popped into my head due to Mission Impossible promo yesterday. Wasn't her singing in Greatest Showman, but she said she can hold a tune.
Isn't Dove Cameron the obvious choice? (I don't know if she's right for this particular production, but I'd love to see her tackle the role someday.)
I really hope this comes to fruition, it's one of my favorites and somehow it's a show my son (and frequent theater companion) has never seen and that needs to be rectified.

they would need an matinee sally if dove would ever join
If the audience for this ends up anything like the one at Sweeney Todd I might have to sit this one out. The insane screaming completely takes me out of the performance.

My Sweeney audience was completely fine. Enthusiastic, but give me that over a dead house any night.

Ok that is good to hear - enthusiastic is fine, but actual full-blown screaming is totally inappropriate for most Broadway shows.

I say no to Lea in everything, but that's personal, I admit that, but I'm also not changing.
I don't know who would be good as Sally...in 2014 I was Emma Stone and she was fine. I feel like whoever Sally is needs the talent to be ~modestly~ talented without being a caricature of Liza.
Though every time my Spotify plays 'Maybe This Time' featuring Natasha Richardson I cringe.

Legitimate question because I'm not as familiar with her recent work, but why would she be an obvious choice? I can't really say I've thought of her as capable to handle a role like Sally before but again, I haven't seen what she's done lately.

She played the Sally Bowles archetype character on this past season of Schmigadoon.

Natasha was the perfectly cast Sally. Again, Sally Bowles is an acting role not a singing role. Sadly, due to Liza Minnelli’s interpretation in Bob Fosse’s 1972 film adaptation, most assume it’s a powerhouse singing role, which it is not. Every stage adaptation has stayed true to casting and cast non-singing actresses to play Sally. Unfortunately, many still judge these actresses and their limited singing as they expect Liza vocals. Throughout the play it is emphasized Sally is a third-rate performer yet people ignore this detail.
