Carol Channing Estate Auction: Awards, Props, Costumes

I saw "Carol Channing With her 10 Stout-Hearted Men" in London in 1970. She lit up the entire theatre. While singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," she tossed fake diamonds and rings into the audience. I was sitting near the stage, and one of those rings landed in my lap. I still have it, and it is one of my treasures.

I miss her.

The red Dolly gown is not the original. That's enshrined at the Smithsonian. The gown being auctioned is from one of the revivals.

I don't see what's "ghoulish" about it; people have estate sales all the time. I'm sure family/close friends selected things may want, but most people don't have storage just to keep everything someone else has accrued. But what else would you like them to do with it? Toss it all? Finding museums that might want individuals is likely TONS of work, which would likely still leave many things unclaimed.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Of course, BroadwayWorld didn’t bother to include:

Proceeds from the sale will benefit her alma mater Bennington College and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Even from one of the revivals, the estimated price seems...shockingly low? Especially when compared to other items listed.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

As with any auction, those are the appraised prices but the items could sell for whatever the bidders feel they're worth. There are theatre fans out there who know these items' worth and will bid whatever they can afford for a little slice of Broadway history. The Hirschfelds and the Golden Globe seem especially high in comparison, though.

As for the ghoulishness...the family can't keep everything. No doubt they held on to plenty of items from Carol's personal and professional life. Selling the other items for charity is a way to help preserve her legacy.

I always thought timing is key for these types of auctions. I'd presume diehard fans of Carol Channing tend to be of a certain age group where they're doing well in their careers and bidding wars will most likely happen for the most sought after items.

If they sell these 30-40 years from now, people may not be as familiar with Carol Channing and bidding wars may not occur.

I hope the estate raises a lot of money from this auction!

Definitely. This auction could tear apart some relationships in the "Forgotten Musicals" and "Broadway Remembered" Facebook groups!

I like the proceeds go to a worthy cause. I still find bidding on a dead woman's personal items ghoulish. What would someone do with a Dolly Levi gown? Mime the title song to their LP while wearing it?

One more time for those who missed it:

Questioned asked question answered.
"

I have several costumes that Betty Grable wore in the show. I'm thinking of adding this one to my collection.

What do I do with them? I cherish them.

Sorry, but I stopped posting photos of myself or my personal belongings online. I had a horrible experience with some photos I posted of myself and it became a nightmare. More recently, my grandchildren have been stalked because of photos their parents posted on Facebook. I know this disappoints you but my family has experienced misery because of on-line photos.

That's terrible. I'm sorry to hear that. I don't want you to post - it was more a hypothetical, should you ever sell a piece from the collection, "call me" sort of thing .......

stay well!

Dead people's things are auctioned or sold all of the time. I don't know why you are hung up on this. People also collect and display costumes.

So, you’ve...never heard of museums or collectors before. Interesting.
