Posted: 11/3/09 at 3:58amWait. The amazing Anna Kendrick from CAMP, High Society, etc. is around and working regularly in TV and film? I had no idea! That's so exciting. She'd be a great Carrie for sure. I like the Carrie Manolakos idea too.

"That's an interesting problem, but not an insurmountable one. They should have been able to figure out how to do it the first time around. I mean, if they were dropping giant chandeliers and landing helicopters around the time this was produced, then someone should have been able to figure how to dump a bucket of blood from the rafters.
If it was a mic issue then they should have just de-miced her at some point before the blood dropped and pre-recorded her lines. "
The story from linzi was that it was a artistic choice ad had nothing to do with what they could or could not do (she did ot agree with the choice). I fact when they 1st started rehearsals only a red thin almost see through sheet was supposed to come out of the bucket, all the cast thought it was silly ad it was linzi whos said they should just pour the blood on her.
It of course had nothing to do with mics as the bloo was poured on Linzi anyway

Posted: 11/3/09 at 11:10amI don't care what show it is if I can see Sutton Foster and Marin Mazzie together. I love them both and though I'm not a fan of Carrie, I would go just to see Sutton and Marin.

Oh, is that what Linzi said? Because I was there at the first preview and I remember exactly what I saw. Leroy from Fame and that girl who wasn't right for A Chorus Line and who immediately went back to Chicago after killing the revival came out with the bucket and very carefully, and very exactly, poured the blood on Carrie's dress. It was clear to everybody in the orchestra and in the balcony that they were avoiding the head mic. Linzi then smooshed some blood up with her hands, carefully avoiding the head mic.
All Carrie had to do to avoid the humiliation was look at the freaks in their stupid outfits heading for her with a bucket and a) make them freeze in place with her mind, or b) run.
But she stood there.

Posted: 11/4/09 at 12:07amRumour on ATC is that Jenn Damiano is indeed in the workshop, but playing Sue not Carrie.

Bennett - correct. Jenn is NOT Carrie!!!! Who started that rumor???
Molly Ranson has been cast as Carrie.
You can google her and find out about her, if you'd like. She was the Jean Fordham alternate in Broadway's "August: Osage County" .. The little girl (for those who don't know character names)
Molly is actually about 20 years old. She's a newcomer. We'll see how it goes!

If the score remains the same (hopefully it changes a bit) but I would love to hear Jenn singing parts in Don't Waste the Moon and Do Me a favor. Or belting out it hurts to be strong. My favorite Sue moment has to be in the Heaven/Unsupecting Hearts Reprise. Where Sue sings the "I miss him more than I knew Tommy what have I done im the one who should be you" I can just hear her singing it. I've been listening to the workshop alot this week and have to say Laurie Beechman and Liz Callaway do a phenominal job. I really love Tommy's Poem from the workshop and love the relationship building it does for Tommy and Carrie instead of it just being love at the dance. Also the Priciple calling her Kathy/Cassie to start off title song "Carrie" works much better than what resulted on Broadway.

Posted: 11/4/09 at 7:00amI could see "Hurts to Be Strong" getting the axe. It was one of the few spots in the show that actually did get some attention between Stratford and Broadway and was still acknowledged to be a pretty weak spot after the re-write.

Posted: 11/4/09 at 7:14amIf you drop a bucket on "blood" down onto a person, how do you avoid it getting on the satge? A wet stage is very dangerous.

You don't avoid the stage, it's not magic. You just clean it after (just ask the guys from Evil Dead!)
Liquid onstage is very common, love. Every season we have at least a show that has this.

blaxx is right...
I mean, the NINE revival actually had a waterfall on the back wall of the theatre that flooded the ENTIRE stage to an ankle-high level of water. And Chita, at nearly 80, DANCED in it.

Posted: 11/4/09 at 5:29pmDoing the finale as it should have been done (the right way- with the bucket falling on Carrie) shouldn't really be a problem. If BOMBAY DREAMS and THE WEDDING SINGER did it, they sure can handle a bit of blood.

All the talk about CARRIE this week made me dig up my old copy of the original book. I'd forgotten what a fun read it is and what a great adaptation the film really is of the source material.
The problem sure isn't the blood - the problem is how do you convincingly show the destruction of the gym through fire, wild electrical wires and overhead sprinklers.
Certainly not the half hearted attempt they made the first time around which was laughable and if you didn't know the original story would have made no sense.

JEN CODY to play Carrie!
Why not? She is miscast as a young girl all the time!

"I wonder if the book says anything regarding Carrie's ethnic background, could she be played with an African American Carrie & mother?"
Carrie's understudy in the original production was black.
I also like the idea of Carrie Manolakos as Carrie

RE: Criticism of "The destruction".
Was this in terms of the music, what was happening onstage, or both?

I think there needs to be a more "City on Fire" type hellish mish-mash of voices, instruments, sound effects and thunder. The 30 seconds of reprise music with weak screaming and pantomime really doesn't do the scene justice. I think they'd be best to make it a musical scene the builds slowly, the musical equivalent of the masterful visuals and editing of the DePalma film. As Arthur would say, "Start there. Follow that."

I have to say, Michael B., the first preview from where I was sitting the destruction of the prom was kind of scary. We heard after that there would be lasers and were sorry we missed them, but I recently saw clips with them and they added nothing.
The colored lights in front of the plastic scrim behind which the people at the prom were screaming for help was pretty great. The bucket of blood was pathetic.
