I definitely do not see a kooky or ditzy young blond as the gym teacher. I sure hope they don't go that route. I don't think they will.

In all the discussions about Marin Mazzie, I noticed that no one mentioned the Encores! Kismet with her as Lalume and Brian Stokes Mitchell as Hadj -- THAT was a great pairing and they both played it to the hilt.

How about Amy Spanger for Chris?

I think Amy Spanger is in Miss Gardner range now

I love that casting! Spanger would be a GREAT Chris... also, how about Nikki Snelson?

Spanger's too old, I suppose, which would be the main casting problem. Girl can dance like there's no tomorrow, though! D'Amboise was pretty ideal back when she did it, despite her bizarre material (esp. "Out For Blood"), so that may end up being the hardest role to cast. She could definitely do "mean girl" with panache!

Namo, (or should I resort to altering your name in that infantile way you love to do with others and call you Namrod? or some other lame fourth-grader approach) you still can't read and you're still acting like a pathetic middle-aged schoolyard bully, hunting down and attacking others on a Broadway message board.

To what purpose? You're an instigator. An antagonist. So much for being smart. And far be it from you to leave well enough alone, right? No high road for you.

"According to Susan Sontag, "The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration. And Camp is esoteric -- something of a private code, a badge of identity even, among small urban cliques." (Notes on Camp)"

If you're going to quote someone like Sontag in your personal attacks, at least be accurate about it.

And at least be accurate about my primary comments raised about the camp factor of Stephen King and "Carrie" which had to do with the "subtlety" of Marin Mazzie as a performer and King's over-the-top story elements and characters. They are directly in line with Sontag's fundamental definition of camp, not that I needed her to give me help with a slang word. But it seems like you need a flowchart to help you follow the course of the comments.

So go ahead now and dig yourself deeper with another isolated example and reverse the order of the remarks to suit your purpose. Show the "kids in the yard" exactly what the bully is made of while you're at it. Impress us all. Follow me around from thread to thread like a sad junkyard dog. Obsess and dote over my every comment and word choice, poised to attack like an amateur litigation lawyer.

But remember, with each antagonistic post, you only serve to prove my point about you.

Amy Spanger is 38! Do you want Carol Channing to play the gym teacher too?

Wow, Amy sure doesn't look 38. I guess Nikki Snelson could also make a good Chris.

I think anyone over 30 playing a high school kid is pushing it, unless it's a parody.

If people like Amy Spanger and Nikki Snelson are cast as high schoolers then expect a re-do of the original production. How can you cast 38 year olds as high schoolers when you have a teenager like Damiano playing Carrie?

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I'm not making a jibe at your name, I'm refusing to call you "Besty" the same way I don't like to stand up for manufactured standing ovations at musicals I don't like.

Once again, you are demonstrating how you are exactly like what you criticize about me. A fact you have yet to acknowledge, although I admitted it on my end. But you're the pedantic condescending schoolmarm so, that's out of the question.

I do applaud you for once again refusing to even acknowledge the point I called you on. That's two so far this week:

1) Horrible Holocaust analogy.

2) Steven King loves to make people laugh unintentionally.

Come on schoolmarm, tighten up your writing.

Question: Was Barbara Cook replaced for Broadway, or did she leave the production?

She opted not to continue with the production after Stratford. She was almost decapitated by the moving sets, but I think that was the least of the problems she felt.

I always wondered if the "almost decapitated" was a bit of an exaggeration. That garage door opener, excuse me, moving wall set went so slow on Broadway you had time to duck under and wave goodbye to Betty and Linzi.

Do you think they would have kept her if she didn't opt to leave? Even after seeing and hearing some of her in the role, I still cannot imagine her in it.

Oh I'm sure they would have. It was a big deal to have Barbara Cook back on the stage. It was a major coup for the RSC to get her. But I think she made it clear rather early (maybe even before the show opened) that she decided to not continue with the production.

I feel like there was talk of somebody else replacing her before Buckley's name emerged.

Since there has been so much 'what if' talk about casting the roles according to how Stephen King describes them in the book - its perhaps worth noting that Cook fits the description of Margaret in the novel almost exactly: A large woman with blond hair who had been a very attractive pert young woman.

Very interesting. I just find it so fascinating that Cook did this show! Marin seems like she will be a cross between Cook and Buckley.

A copy of Barbara Cook's rehearsal tapes were leaked some time ago. She is rehearsing "I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance" and has a few choice comments that make it clear she is already seeing a disaster in the making.

I was thinking the same thing about Marin Mazzie. She can easily become a cross between Cook's almost ethereal soprano and Buckley's hell-fire belting.

Ever since I heard the Carrie cd several years ago, I was thinking only Alice Ripley can sing the crazy score like Betty Buckley can!

And Jenn as Carrie is a great choice, although Carrie is supposed to be chubby.

Alice Ripley has done some serious damage to her voice over the last few years though. Frankly, I bet she couldn't sing it anymore which is really unfortunate.

Michael B - do you attribute Alice's damage to N2N or her rock band stuff? Could rest repair/restore the damage? Is she aware, has she acknowledged or spoken of this?

Well the damage definitely started long before NEXT TO NORMAL. Maybe during her rock years, I don't know. I do know that yes, people have spoken to her about it and that it has at least cost her some recording gigs. I'm sure rest could probably help the problem but who knows how its progressed singing that NEXT TO NORMAL score every night.

I think she'd probably have to have surgery at this point but of course that can be just as risky.

Listening to "And eve was weak" I'm surprised at how horrifying it is (in a good way, I mean)..I really think it is a good example of something that just wouldn't work as well without song (keep in mind I barely know Carrie at all, since those damn soundboards floating around only have 1/2 the songs, and I haven't seen the movie/read the book).

I wonder if Mazzie can pull it off though - from the only two shows I know of her (Passion, Ragtime), she seems so..tame.
