Interesting! With only 2 weeks left, Marin finally took a show off! I would love to see her go on if I were in town. I'd also love to see how Jason pulls off playing opposite someone not his wife for the first time in their run.
Pretty good vocals (except you can see her gear herself up for every high note, which was a bit distracting) but to be honest, I don't think she's really had time to put Diana through her the way that Alice, Jessica, and especially Marin have done. Some little girl in the audience said that Catherine hasn't run the show even once and that this was her first time ever doing so. Not sure how she purports to know this, and it doesn't make sense to me at all - they have an understudy rehearsal once a week, no? But at any rate, Catherine did flub several lines/lyrics and just looked really nervous the whole time, so maybe it's true. (And if it IS true, she did WONDERFULLY!) The cast was very supportive and did a pretty good job adjusting to the different energy. But it was definitely different.
It would have been nice to see her once she's more comfortable in the role. Her voice's pure quality did interesting things for Diana. She did, however, feel like the most "broadway" version of Diana I've seen yet (and I've seen all but one go on for Diana now) which I thought kind of didn't fit. It didn't feel as grounded in real life as it does when I watch Marin.
But nonetheless, her vocals were good, and it would have been nice to see her grow into this role a bit...oh well.
Yes, adamgreer, it did feel very mechanical. It almost felt like the cast was all trying to anticipate problems that would arise and how they could fix them. You could really see the gears turning for everyone. And yes, she did a nice job. She just didn't feel that into it - to be expected for a first time when you're still trying to remember everything correctly and work through the nerves.
The rest of the cast was pretty good in adjusting. But like I said, everyone looked kind of on pins and needles. I was happy to see that everything I love about Jason's performance was still there, even without Marin. (Which feels like what you are really asking...) Meghann also had good chemistry with Catherine. Nothing near what Meghann, Jason, and Marin have together, but they honestly feel like a real family to me.
Adam and Dragon - I'm curious...I usually see you on my other n2n threads and love the discussions we have about this show. How many times have you both seen it? Just curious. :)
The "little girl" was right. According to Cathy's twitter this was her first real run through of the show which happened to be in front of a live audience.
The most uncomfortable moment of the matinee today came at the beginning of The Break, when Porter appeared to forget the words. The orchestra vamped for a long moment, then she remembered what to sing.
Cathy found out at nine this morning and this was her first run through (I was sitting by her niece's boyfriend and we spoke).
I have not seen the show since the original cast but I absolutely loved Catherine! Loved her singing and thought she had a very interesting (but great) take on the role.
Adam and Louis were phoning in, kind of a letdown and I have to agree that today seemed very mechanical.
Absolutely adored Jason's take on Dan.
Meghann- at first I thought she just acting like Jennifer but as the show progressed I got the idea that, that's just the role... with that said I really enjoyed Meghann.
Kyle left me slightly underwhelmed, it could be that he was so overhyped but I'm not sure... just wasn't feeling it. That said, his acting was phenomenal, and his voice, while fantastic, left me wanting more. -But, I was speaking with some people after the show and they said Kyle was having an off day and apparently left out his high note in "I'm Alive" ...no clue as to what that refers to.
While I do think that it was great that Marin took a day off, I saw the show on the 1st and she was amazing. She didn't seem low energy or seemed that she needed time off. Regardless, I would have liked to see Cathy just for the sake of seeing someone else do the role.
I also do agree that Hobson is phoning it in. I feel that he has been doing that for awhile now. I can't tell you the number of performances I have seen where he seems to be just walking through the lines after There's a World. What he is reporting is very critical information and important to the show's plot. Yet, he just waltzes through it like it is no big deal.

I feel like they've been doing that for a little while, unfortunately. As much as I love both Adam and Louis, one of my all-time favourite times to see the show was when we got Brian Crum on for Henry, and Michael Berry on for the doctors.
members of the cast have talked about the weekly run-through for the understudies, joking about how funny superboy is when someone has to play both gabe and henry...why do you think they don't run through the entire show? that's literally what it's for.
They added the high note in to the end of "I'm Alive", as well as some note fluctuations to "Make Up Your Mind/Catch Me I'm Falling" when the entire cast is singing.
I work for the show and this was her first time going on (and running through the show in its entirety). She had an hour long rehearsal before the show too. I thought she did a great job! Her voice is a little bit country-esque.
