There is no question that the lights surely will be dimmed. We are talking one of the greatest Broadway stars of all time. She is to Kander & Ebb as Bernadette is to Sondheim. Of great historical, cultural and artistic importance and part of the fabric of Broadway. This is not something that would ever be second guessed. Surely, right??
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I felt Chita was short-changed by the Spielberg WSS. Rita Moreno, wonderful as she is, was not the first Anita. It would’ve been nice for Chita to get a little of the glory too. Make a cameo or something, like she did in the Chicago movie. Anyway, yeah, not dimming the lights for her is inconceivable.
Beyoncé is not an ally. Actions speak louder than words, Mrs. Carter. #Dubai #$$$
Chita was one of the reasons I became a lifelong theater fan. She, Gwen Verdon and Jerry Orbach in the original cast of Chicago was my first Broadway show when I was a teenager. I’ll never forget going out and buying the OBC album, yes I said album, and playing it over and over. I tried to see everything she appeared in over the years. What a talent! Thank you Chita and rest in peace,
Has anyone else read Chita's memoir that came out last year? It's a great and fun read, with all her stories about her life in the theater.Highly recommend it.
There hasn't been a decade since I've been seeing Bway shows that I didn't catch Chita is something fabulous: Chicago in '75, Merlin in '80, The Rink (FOUR times!!) in '84, Spiderwoman in '93, Nine in '03, an Atlantis Baltic cruise as headliner in '08, Drood in '13, The Visit in '15, and her cabaret show in Pittsburgh in '22. All the love she sent across the footlights came back to her 1000 times over. The lady WAS Broadway, and there will be none like her again.
The great Chita Rivera has left us and Broadway but we have the column that Denis Ferrera writing for Liz Smith has left us celebrating her presence and now especially her memory. Enjoy the thought of her …
I witnessed her artistry in the Pre-Broadway out of town tryout of "Chicago" with Gwen Verdon and Jerry Orbach at the Forrest Theater, and in "Kiss of the Spiderwoman" when the National Tour played at the Merriam Theater (formerly the Shubert, now the Miller.). Rest in Peace Dear Lady.
