I wish they would have just let 5 nominees for Best Musical. 9 to 5 could have certainly held its own against the other shows nominated. There is something fishy as to why it is not nominated for more awards and why its being overshadowed by the touring companies.
The Touring shows are NOT going to pay to bring their sets/costumes/actors/production team to New York. I HIGHLY doubt it. Expect either a live feed from whatever city the shows are currently at on the road, or having it be pre-taped.
I would much rather see 9 to 5 perform than the touring companies.
But I do see what they were thinking. They are trying to reach to everyone in America and show how "Broadway is in your backyard." etc.... I don't like it, but I see what they are doing.
over on the Legally Blonde tour blog it says that Becky Gulsvig is going to perform So Much Better with a handful of ex-tour cast members. I imagine its whoever happened to be handy in New York. The tour casts of the shows still running ON Broadway puzzle me though.
I dropped a comment on the TONYS Facebook announcement about this injustice.

Its becoming clearer and clearer that the producers of the Tony's have a major issue with 9 to 5 and are not interested in helping it succeed.
I'm pretty sure that some of the Broadway Jersey Boys company members are performing.

West Side Story and Guys and Dolls are performing together. I'm not sure how they're going about it, but Guys and Dolls is performing Luck Be a Lady and West Side is doing Tonight (maybe the Quintet, idk)
They need to continue to get ratings in order to continue to be able to air the awards. I'm happy with the producers doing whatever they need to do to get people to watch.
If all someone knows is Legally Blonde and they hear it'll be performing and they watch it -- imagine that these people are also now getting exposed to the other things on Broadway right now (imagining that they are still watching the awards at this point)
A lot of exposure for a lot of avenues... Jersey Boys targets the men, Mamma Mia - the women, and Legally Blonde - the younger teenage girls... I think it's a smart move. Do I like it or agree? No. But I think it's smart.

Per Playbill, Shrek is confirmed to do "What's up Duloc?"
What an AWFUL song choice. Awful.
They should be doing "Freak Flag." Isn't "What's Up Duloc?" basically a Faarquad solo?
Another stupid song choice.
Um, shouldn't they do something with the more recognizable title character? Wouldn't that draw more ticket sales? Also, "Freak Flag" or any of Shrek's songs would be more catchy than "What's Up Duloc." Lame choice. And we've seen this done already.

I bet they chose it because they didn't want to have to get the cast in and out of that intense make up and those crazy costumes for a big ensemble number like "Freak Flag."
And ditto to showcasing Shrek. I mean, especially as a nominee, it would be HELL to get D'Arcy James in and out of that insane makeup for a three minute long appearance
But still, couldn't they have pre-recorded "Freak Flag"? Or figured something else out. "What's Up Duloc?" is a lame, awful choice. It won't sell tickets the way that "Freak Flag" would.

Yes, that makeup is hell, but they should have thought about how to make it easier and faster for the actor, and perhaps they should do the Shrek number at the top of the telecast so he can get out of makeup for the rest of the show. Shrek is all about the spectacle and costumes, so you should show that off no matter how long it'll take the ensemble to get out of costume and makeup (they shouldn't be a priority anyway since none of them are nominees). And sure, Brian probably won't be able to do red carpet stuff, but that's why the producers would throw him some extra cash so that in the long run, they'll get tons more money. When a show is called Shrek the Musical, people watching are going to expect Shrek to appear in the number. In simple terms: duh.

I think they should have Brian do the red Carpet in the costume, it would be a great publicity stunt.
If Pal Joey does perform, I expect it would just be a solo number, featuring either Stockard Channing ("What is a Man?" or "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered") or Martha Plimpton ("Zip").
Does Stockard Channing really want to embarrass herself on national television with her "singing"?
I hope Martha sings "Zip"! That'd be fabulous.

You'd think "Hair" would want to do what they're known for -- either "Aquarius" or "Good Morning, Starshine".
While I'd love for Plimpton to preform, I assume Pal Joey will follow suit with other closed revival nominees over the years and not preform.
The TONYS Facebook says that all 8 shows are performing.

according to PLaybill Pal Joey will perform
"The 63rd Annual Tony Awards, which will be broadcast live on CBS June 7, will feature performances by each of the Tony-nominated Best Musicals and Best Musical Revivals, including Billy Elliot, The Musical; Guys and Dolls; Hair; Next to Normal; Pal Joey; Rock of Ages; Shrek the Musical; and West Side Story."
list
NY1 is running a clip of rehearsal footage today. From what I can tell, Hair is doing "Hair" (including the entire ball wall represented by drop along the back and over the legs, and the running and jumping up the aisles and on the the seats). Can't tell what song from N2N, but Alice and J. Robert were onstage. It looks like they are using the three levels of panels to represent the set.
