"A rousing alternative in a marketplace packed with noisy, special-effects-heavy sequels, “Hairspray” is the best and most entertaining movie adaptation of a stage musical so far this century - and yes, I’m including the Oscar-winning “Chicago.”
Sorry - didn't see the other thread :)

Here's the New Yorker review for anyone who's interested: www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/cinema/2007/07/23/070723crci_cinema_denby
Positive about Pfeiffer, scathing about Travolta. Very little on the rest of the cast. Overall a mixed review, but I was braced for worse from David Denby. I am a huge Hairspray fan & am massively excited about the movie, but I suspect once I've seen it I will probably agree with his opening sentence.
Ouch about Mr T.

HAIRSPRAY reviews
Fierstein not Feinstein. OY, VEY.
The thing about the NEW YORKER review that bugs me, is that he is pretty much saying, "Since it is not a carbon copy of the Broadway show, I am not too fond of it." coughcough . . . THE PRODUCERS, anyone?
Oh, and the guy from the NEW YORK MAGAZINE just seemed like he went in looking to tear this movie apart. But yet, it is the "Critics Pick." Does that make sense to you? **Shrugs Shoulders**

Congratulations Marc! You must be positively giddy (as if you weren't already).

Fair point.
Also, from IMDB today:
"Hairspray director Adam Shankman has hit back at a journalist who is proposing a boycott of the film because its star John Travolta has "no business" playing an iconic gay character. The Pulp Fiction actor stars as super-sized woman Edna Turnblad in the latest adaptation of the kitsch musical, angering the editor of gay newspaper Washington Blade, Kevin Naff. Naff claims Travolta should never have been cast in the role because his religion Scientology is "homophobic." But Hairspray filmmaker Shankman is astonished by Naff's claims, insisting Travolta has "no problem with people being gay." He says, "I am stunned this has gotten that far. He (Naff) has made the dumbest claims on the entire planet. Everybody involved in Hairspray - all the creators are gay. So John has no problem with people being gay - me, the writers, composer, John Waters - all gay. John's personal beliefs never walked onto my set. I never heard the word Scientology."
CONGRATULATIONS!! I seriously cannot wait to see this on Friday, I'm so so excited.
If 94% holds, that would put its tomato-meter in RATATOUILLE territory, which would be very high. Some of the big names have given it good word, from the site.
Personally, I really enjoyed RAT a lot, but HAIRSPRAY is the best movie of the summer so far, hands down.

"In the end, that's what makes "Hairspray" a great screen musical that will have large and happy audiences dancing in their seats for decades to come."
Holy Sh*t! How cool is that?
The music sounds great, I can't wait to see the movie. I really loved the Broadway show, but I'm sure this will be a different experience altogether. Plus, <3 Zac Efron ...
My gripe with John Travolta isn't the fact that he's a Scientologist - he just kind of sucks as Edna, from what I've heard of Timeless to Me and Welcome to the 60's. But I'll reserve final judgment until after I see the movie.
Hey, at rottentomatoes.com, it is back to 100% (which makes no sense considering it has one bad review) but hey whatever works.

Well, despite that seemingly bad review from New York Magazine, the film was still chosen as their "Critic's Pick."
By far the best almost homophobic review is on Aintitcool news. LOL.
The movie-musical has returned.

"By far the best almost homophobic review is on Aintitcool news. LOL."
Ironic, since Aintitcool news is a website entirely populated by guys who masturbate to The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. But he liked it! He liked it!
This is going to be huge.
Rotten Tomatoes is back up to 100% because they had qualified a Critic's Pick review as rotten... after many correction emails (myself included!) it seems they fixed the mistake. The current tally is 20 for 20 -- all fresh, whoop!
The reviews have been beyond fantastic , im so pleased for everyone involved. It looks like Hairspray is going to be the sneaky hit of the summer (and after the pure crap that way Pirates 3, shrek 3,Transformers etc i could not be happier)
Also the UK critics are falling for Hairsprays charms as well wooh woooh roll on friday
