"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
Hey, I'm a performer. I've performed in my fair share of crap. It's great to perform, but it's also embarassing to deliver banal material. But you know what? You learn to take it. Not everything you get to do will be Sondheim or Williams. If these actors are so thin skinned and need to be babied then they shouldn't be in this business. As you say, it's tough. They perform knowing that they're going to get critiqued.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
No one's saying the actors aren't passionate about their work. Some shows aren't that good and some performers aren't great in certain shows. It maybe harsh, but as you said, it's a tough industry and that's the truth. Updated On: 4/24/08 at 10:53 PM
dramadude - why are you bitching SO much about the performers?
everyone, except Snyder and Stanley (who are miscast), are fabulous and totally devoted to their performances. that's not the problem here... it's the actual material and direction.
I, for one, feel bad for the talented cast members who will suffer because of a bad score and lack of direction. it's a shame. but it's the business dear -- it happens.
p.s. - I saw Tory during Previews and she was wonderful! very funny and totally into it. both her and Courtney ARE properly cast (unlike the two "stars" of this trash)
All of the negative reviews just enforce what we have been saying from the beginning. I won't feel the need to defend myself anymore. I will just send a list of these reviews to whoever would like to argue about CRY-BABY not being overrated, dull, and trashy.
At least Amalou stopped by for a visit. Where did the others go? Seems they only stuck around for Newsday and that obscure Radio Station's reviews. interesting... Updated On: 4/24/08 at 10:56 PM
So this really does not explain the random love for Cry-Baby in the OCC's and Drama League awards?

Ah, disappointed to see bad reviews. I thought things might turn around after the changes made in previews. But as said many times before, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm not going to get angry at reviewers just because they personally didn't enjoy the show.
I'm glad that I at least got to see the show myself and judge it on my own. For me it was a blast, but for other people it obviously was not. If it makes it, I'll be very happy, and if it doesn't, my life won't end (though I will miss it).

^Not to argue, but that's really not a very logical statement. I disagree with everything you said, but reading those reviews aren't going to change my own opinion on it. Just because the majority of the press hates it doesn't mean everyone else has to/is going to change their minds just because the press says otherwise.
Make ones like that for the leads in The Country Girl...you're gonna need them.

I will say one thing... almost all of the reviews seem to be pointing out the amazing choreography of the piece. At least Rob Ashford is getting his proper dues because he did a great job.
Someday, I was thinking the same thing. I'm assuming Brantley didn't mention Mauzey's performance so that he didn't have to mention any positive aspects that could be quoted. As good as she was, I actually felt that Hanke did even more with the material he was given.
If the audience could do better, they'd be up here on stage and I'd be out there watching them. - Ethel Merman
Ashford will probably win the Outer Critics and Drama Desk for Best Choreography, while Blankenbuehler will win the Tony.
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."
-bjh2114 (on Michael Riedel)
Yeah, ChrisS, Hanke impressed me, too. He found laughs in spots I'm not sure other folks would have – mostly by doing interesting physical work. He took stiffness to such a great, ridiculous level, ending up with a set of gestures and robotic indications that made it clear his character was always performing and "on" in a phony way for those around him. His technique was new to me – and hilarious.
After In My Life and this, I'm really feeling for Hanke. He's clearly extremely talented.
All that said, Alli Mauzey is pretty dang great with her crazy schtick. Love her demented use of her lollipop prop.
As a John Waters fan, I'm sad to find that this show isn't the next Hairspray, although I was never really optimistic about the idea of making Cry Baby into a musical in the first place.
Well despite the attempts of some here to label this a failure on the order of Carrie or Dance of the Vampires, the reviews as I thought were nowhere near as bad as some here would have expected. Brantley's review was certainly negative, and I'm sure some here will take glee in one or two lines of his predictable rants. But go back and read some of his over-the-top nasty, queeny flames directed at most any Wildhorn show (ex. Dracula) and this review is tame by comparison. It even scored a few positive to rave reviews. Nope its not going to win the Tony, but it isn't a legendary critical disaster either.
I'm quite surprised Brantley did not mention Alli Mauzey since just about everyone seemed quite enthralled with her.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I'm just thankful that the critical response won't bury this show amongst 'others' and it will actually be given an opportunity on the boards - EVERY show *deserves* a shot, and if it's 'entertaining' and 'fun' to some, let it run a while! That's what I say to the negative energy. I think it'll have a healthy little run at the Marquis, at least until October.
Yeah, I'm sure the reviews will kill this show. They did it for Wicked for too. They also saved Grey Gardens. Thank goodness. Reviews make or break every show.
