Am I the only one that is disappointed that Julianne Hough is cast in this? I’m still not over the fact that she thought it was acceptable to go in black face for a Halloween costume. Why has the Broadway community welcomed her back with open arms? I am so not for this casting choice.

yeah, she’s a subpar actress and singer but again, why are we welcoming her back with open arms when she thought doing black face was appropriate??? Come on Broadway!!

That was 2013.. She apologized and said that she was actually a huge fan of the character, which is why she dressed up as her.

People make mistakes and learn from them. Should we still hold that against them 13 years later?

This is an overly simplistic take.

This is a commercial revival of a musical that was written to be commercial. If there are parts of the writing that might hinder its success with an audience of now, what kind of moron wouldn’t take those into account when producing?


In My Fair Lady the character of Higgins is an asshole. But he wasnt written to be anything less than an asshole, in the original production. You can leave him unchanged and the audience are still getting what the authors intended now, in the way they did then. The ending of this particular piece is obviously the moment that comes under scrutiny.

In order for an audience of today to have experience a piece, in the way the authors originally intended will often mean changes. The same as with Shakespeare. You can choose to present them as period pieces or you can ensure that the audience is able to connect with the work, with the same immediacy as original intended. Shakespeare is now so well known it can withstand both treatments.


But did the creators of Damn Yankees want us to question if the character singing these lyrics is a sexist pig, or was it simply deemed inoffensive at the time? The latter. Again, it’s a commercial production or a commercial show…a musical comedy. If the authors lived now and the show was being created for now would they include those lines? No, they would appeal to the sensibility of today and allow the piece to have a wide audience.


Changing too much of Applegate’s lyrics…that is unnecessary because the character is supposed to be the devil. A loveable, roguish, show-man of a devil but the devil himself regardless. Hopefully they will figure out what they are doing there and not alter too much.


But the whining of ‘they should leave it the same because it’s a period piece!’ shows a sophomoric understanding of commercial productions and authors intent.

Question for those of you who follow ticket pricing swings on Broadway shows: Visiting NYC next April, looking at this show for the April 10 evening performance, about 2.5 weeks into previews. The front center orchestra looks about half-sold (unknown amount of holdbacks, of course), rear and sides not so much. But I'm interested in the mezz, where excluding the front row, the mezz is barely selling at all. Since the initial presale they have moved exactly 6 center section mezz tickets, and the sides don't appear to be doing any better.

In fact, in a random look at the first few months, the mezz for this show doesn't appear to be selling very well at all (save for some matinees), and only the front half of the orch seems to be generating much interest. If this keeps up, any thoughts from all you veteran Broadway ticket buyers on when we might see some price breaks/discount codes, especially during the previews? Around Black Friday, perhaps?

Melissa25, thanks for your input. I'll add to your possible discount list TodayTix, which currently says "Coming Soon" for DY tix. My problem is that I'll only be in NYC for a weekend. I'm booking other shows as well, so I probably won't have much flexibility on a show date, if any, if I wait many months to book this show. Even though I have a TDF membership, I don't think I'll feel comfortable waiting until maybe a month before to buy on TDF, let alone upon arrival in NYC to buy on TKTS.

All I'm hoping for is saving some $$ on a pair of decent mezz seats.That's the reason for my question about the likelihood of some discounting happening in the near future, rather than spring 2027.
