DAMN YANKEES on Broadway

Tony and Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, Emmy Award winner Julianne Hough, and Hamilton star Austin Scott come together in the revisal of DAMN YANKEES. Named one of the Best of the Year by The Washington Post, this American favorite is back home for the first time in 30 years. But never like this.

What if you could have it all? Youth. Talent. Glory. For one average Joe, the chance to become baseball’s hottest new star is suddenly within reach. But when a deal too good to be true collides with a temptation he never saw coming, the life of his dreams could cost him everything he truly loves.

Irresistible music. Breathtaking dance. The white-hot thrill of the game. Give in to the spectacular rush of DAMN YANKEES.

Just remember… to keep your soul, you gotta have heart.

DAMNY YANKEES (Marquis) - 2027 Broadway revival - Harris, Hough & Scott

I saw the 1994 REVIVAL of this show. Now we are told we’re getting a REVISAL of this show. Why?

Approximately 40 years had passed since DAMN YANKEES premiered on Broadway in 1955 to the 1994 revival. The revival ran for over 500 performances because it worked and audiences liked it.

Now, here we are awaiting a REVISAL of this show. Do producers, etc. really think audiences are so dumb today that we can’t see a show, set in mid-50s America, without it being overhauled and shoehorned into 21st century sensibilities?

The mid-1950s are quite removed from the mid 2020s. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch for today’s audiences to be thoroughly entertained by a REVIVAL of “Damn Yankees”…and if I’m wrong, why are generations still enthralled by “I Love Lucy” reruns?

Nobody under the age of 60 is watching let alone being enthralled by "I Love Lucy". You're over 20 years removed on that getting aired on Nick at Nite.

I saw this in DC and loved it!!! I am of the camp that believes aspects of the original show don’t age well, and this team found the perfect balance of honoring the original while cleverly adjusting what doesn’t hold up. The thing I’m most curious about is the staging and design. In DC, it was in the round. Therefore, I assumed they were waiting for Circle in the Square. I guess not!

Felt this way about the book revisal - strong changes. The choreography was great. The cast a real mixed bag. The direction was just okay - it relies on the book - but isn't the most inventive or exciting. The director is relying on the new book and their choreography but not pushing the story/staging forward in any new way.

I, for one, welcome the new casting. McClure was a stand out but interested to see what Harris and Hough will bring. (Villafane was serviceable enough but nothing special). Donica sounded great but something was missing from his Young Joe. He almost read too old and not quite a baseball player. interested to see Austin Scott's more youthful/ inevitably sexier approach. Most necessary is a new Gloria Thorpe casting - surely the team knows this needs the bar raised.

I sort of fell in love with this show via the 1994 cast recording, which I think is sensational. (I've never seen it staged, only seen the movie). Neil Patrick Harris is insufferable to me, so he would be a big deterrent if I were to have the chance to see this. Mostly, all this talk about the Yankees is making me feel sad that baseball season is quickly winding to a close for another year (but super excited about the Yankees/Red Sox face off).

Why is NPH insufferable? Is that a common feeling around here? Not trying to pick a fight, I'm fairly indifferent to him. Just curious.

Well obviously it's going to be subjective, but he just grates on me. He does essentially the same schtick in every appearance he makes, whether it be as an actor, awards host, or whatever. I think his stint as the Oscars host most showcased what I don't like about him -- a "wink wink" smugness and a sense that he thinks he's adorable.

TODAY SHOW - Cast of ‘Damn Yankees’ Talks Starring in the Broadway ‘Revisal’

Julianne Hough, Neil Patrick Harris, and Austin Scott join TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones to talk about their Broadway ‘revisal’ of “Damn Yankees" and what's different in this latest production. “It first debuted on Broadway in the '50s…In order for people to really be able to connect with it in a very real sense I think it had to be updated a little bit,” Scott says. Then, in honor of the cast’s first interview together, they get to know each other better with some rapid-fire questions!

Current Audience Demographics:

While the show was originally designed to capture a broad, "co-viewing" nuclear family demographic in the 1950s, its modern audience is uniquely multi-generational: [1]

  • Age (Older Adults): The core linear television audience (viewers watching via traditional cable networks like MeTV or Catchy Comedy) skews 55 and older. These viewers often tune in for a sense of nostalgia or familiar comfort.
  • Age (Children & Young Adults): Due to its prominence on streaming apps like Pluto TV and Paramount+, the show pulls in a steady stream of Gen Z and Alpha generation children. The broad, highly visual physical comedy of Lucille Ball requires zero historical context to enjoy, making it inherently timeless for young audiences.
  • Gender: The viewership is relatively evenly split, leaning slightly female. While Lucille Ball's position as a powerhouse female lead historically attracted strong female viewership, the situational writing and slapstick style appeal equally to all genders.
  • Global Appeal: Because it is syndicated in dozens of languages worldwide, its demographic spans broad cross-cultural lines outside of the United States

I Love Lucy is still heavily in syndication. In fact, the show practically invented the concept of the television rerun. It continues to reach an estimated 40 million American viewers each year through traditional broadcast syndication, specialized cable networks, and digital streaming platforms.

Where It Broadcasts Today

The classic sitcom remains highly accessible across multiple distribution channels:

  • Over-the-Air Syndication & Cable: Reruns are actively broadcast on networks like MeTV and Catchy Comedy, which features a dedicated weekly programming block.
  • Streaming Services: The show is streamed 24/7 on free ad-supported platforms like Pluto TV (which hosts a dedicated I Love Lucy channel) and is available on-demand via subscription services like Paramount Plus and Hulu.
