I don't know all the details, but 9/26 could be the week of September sweeps, and they could have already committed airtime to season premieres of previously announced shows before Broadway's return was ever in the picture.
Sunday at 7 is always 60 minutes on CBS, so at 8 it could be the season premiere of The Equalizer? Or a different previously announced show?
From the Tonys end, starting at 7 was always the case with the technical awards starting an hour before the 8pm broadcast - and then more performances spread out throughout the night. So it comes down to CBS and their air time. The League and American Theatre Wing always said they wanted to coincide the awards this year with the re-opening of all running shows, so this could have just been a result of a negotiation / compromise / scheduling requirements on both ends / working with previous agreements of air time?
Tonys wanted September/near the opening of most shows, CBS found a time that fit within their previously sold air time, and this is the result?
The extra step of getting a free-trial of a streaming service is annoying and frustrating, but given what the conversations may have been between producers and network execs, it sounds like they did what they could?
Either that or we could #cancelLesleyStahl"
What the f**k does Lesley Stahl have to do with anything?? (yes I know she's a contributor on 60 Minutes). Your rant is missing the point of why CBS is using Paramount +. The Tonys have always delivered a small but dedicated audience that fits the targeted demographic of their platforms perfectly. Just as Hamilton drew millions of customers to sign up for Disney + and then never bothered to cancel it because they liked what they saw (or were just too lazy to cancel), the Tonys will deliver a nice chunk of new customers who otherwise might never have thought to sign up for it, who will try it out and then either choose to stay (or not bother to cancel). It's all about the marketing!

I don't think he/she was ranting at all... it seems like the poster was trying to logically work through why this particular decision was made through a series of rhetorical questions. It didn't seem like he/she was voicing displeasure with it.
And I'm pretty sure the "#cancelLesleyStahl" comment was intended as a joke...

CBS has football on Sundays in the fall - September 26th is week 3 and the 4:05pm national game is either Jets/Broncos or Dolphins/Raiders (depending on where you’re located), I think the tv schedule block is until 7pm, and the games almost never end on time. Assume the awards are live and start on time at 7pm, not surprised the show starts on Paramount+. CBS would never cut away from an NFL 4th quarter for the Tonys.
I’m glad it’s being televised...11 months after the nominations...

I cannot for the life of me understand why someone who wants to watch the Tonys or has any interest in watching them would choose not to simply because it's on a streaming service when the time it takes to sign up is all of 30 seconds and the cost would range from free (trial) to $6 (one month subscription).
That being said, I do hope it goes back to Broadcast TV for the next normal Tonys to have a better shot at catching casual viewers. I think this is totally ok because the Tonys as is this year will be weird anyway so it makes more sense to focus more on the "Broadway is back" element than the awards element.

I’m sure I’m in the minority but I hope that award goes vacant. I only saw the first preview and am a fan of his in general, but unless a lot changed, I don’t think it was a Tony worthy performance and voters aren’t obligated to vote for him even as the only nominee….

I would have agreed with you up until an hour ago. I was reading something on IG and one comment was "Im 15, and my parents can't afford another streaming service, what am I supposed to do?". Not allowing every kid to watch it for free is a blow to people who cannot afford to go to a show or have the money for Paramount.

I mean, that's your opinion. Not everyone felt that way. Personally I thought he had absolutely no charisma in the role. Had Mrs. Doubtfire opened in time, I'm very confident Rob McClure would have beaten him.

Lolz. Yep. Of course it's my opinion. That is why we are all here.
The thing that is not an opinion? He will, in fact, get a Tony in September.

The use of "Period" made it seem like there was no room for any interpretation other than yours. But I'm glad that we're all on the same page that everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Oh he absolutely will. The voters aren't THAT spiteful lol.

I'm with Sutton Ross. Tveit was perfect. And deserves to win his Tony.
But what any of us on this thread think won't affect the outcome, unless we're Tony voters. As long as Tveit gets 60% of the vote, he'll win. To me, Tveit's overdue. He should've been nominated and WON for ''Next to Normal.''
For the record, I also thought Chris McCarrell of ''The Lightning Thief'' deserved a Tony NOMINATION. And it was pretty classy of Tveit to reach out to McCarrell because Tveit knows how it feels when your name isn't called.

If that's your idea of perfection. Girl...
He has a wonderful voice, sure, but that doesn't make for a whole, realized character. He had no chemistry with anyone on stage, and there was no passion or emotion to anything he was doing. It felt lifeless. And it's sad that people will now be going to see him thinking they're getting a Lead Actor Tony winning performance on par with Ripley in Next to Normal or Lupone in Gypsy or, heck, even the guy from Tootsie.
But not giving him the award seems extra cruel given the circumstances.

But couldn't most 15 year olds afford $6 to give to their parents if they wanted to watch the Tonys? We're not talking about like $60 or even $15 like HBO Max.

Correct, it would be free at best and $6 at worst

I saw Moulin Rouge twice, once with Karen and once with Ashley, and found Tveit absolutely captivating. For me, his vocal performance alone merits the Tony.
On a side note, I’m excited to see what they perform? My initial idea is a Chandelier / Roxanne mix to showcase Danny, Sahr, Robyn and Aaron while also incorporating the other Lady Ms and the ensemble.

And maybe if you cancel after the free trial they’ll still give you access to the streamer! I would sign up for CBS All Access (Which is now Paramount+) for The Good Fight and Big Brother live feeds and I’d cancel when they ended for the season. When I cancelled after BB 2019 it still gave me access that I have to this day. The card I used was from a debit card with a bank I no longer bank with so I know I’m not still being charged and I know it was listed under my “cancelled subscriptions” on my iPhone for that last month I had access. Yesterday, I got an email saying that as a loyal long term subscriber I will get the premium ad free subscription without it affecting my current fee when the price goes up on June 6. I haven’t paid at all since September 2019 but have had access ever since... and the new Paramount + is so much better than CBS All Access. If I didn’t have a “free” subscription, I’d actually consider keeping this one all year long.

Correct. His chemistry with Ashley is insane. I hope she is the principal Satine in the Fall.

A truncated opening medley (like they did on GMA) seems entirely possible once again, but in my wildest dreams I hope Rouge! does "Bad Romance/Tainted Love/Seven Nation Army/Toxic/Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", the second-act opener medley which I heard got standing ovations on the daily in Boston.

I know it might be hard to fathom for those posting they’ve seen a Broadway show multiple times, but many people don’t have a spare $6. Some don’t have internet access to stream.
Award shows are a dying breed. Oscars, Tonys and the soon to be extinct Golden Globes generate very little buzz or momentum any more. Performers have direct access to their fans via social media. Fans no longer need to wait for award shows to see glimpses of their faves. Ratings for all award shows are on life support.
Winners are posted live and the best performances show up on YouTube the next day.
CBS is smart for trying to make money off of the few who will pay to watch.

Posted: 5/27/21 at 1:20amI do agree that award shows are a dying breed. Especially considering I used to watch them all now I only really have watched the Tonys... generally just for the performances. But there is a large number of people I know who have no longer watched an award show because they have no interest in hearing politics and political thank you speeches. They just really wanted to see what people are wearing. Hear some host making jokes at the actors own expense and play A game of who will win or award bingo.

Posted: 5/27/21 at 7:40amLess award shows yes, but that won't affect the egot. We don't need 7 music Awards, critics choice, or awards on tbs. They host them when they think it's profitable and stop for 5 years (billboard) when they don't. News flash-everyone is a whore. And don't get me started on scripted Netflix shows qualifying for 'daytime emmys'. An absolute joke. Have 1 Emmy broadcast and do unaired categories if u have to for Christ sake. And while I'm at it, if a guest actor is really that good, they can be in the supporting category. Complete lunacy.

I agree with everything you say (although I would suggest that the child's statement implied, to me at least, that the family had basic internet access).
Just to add a bit: broadcast TV itself is a dinosaur in the making. We are at an interesting point along the technology wave, which clearly has not crested yet. And the control of the media part of that wave is sure to continue to shift. It seems clear that the cable companies qua media companies saw the streaming companies starting to drown them and concocted, at a furious pace, this patchwork of defensive responses. They won't last for very long because they don't make sense. The transmission of "news" has become largely decentralized and will continue to be, just as the financial markets are being overtaken by crypto. So in 2021 we have this Tony awards concept that feels created by a committee, because it was, and the more unsatisfying the result, the sooner the dinosaurs (and Now I am referring to the patchwork) will die. The bottom line is that CBS (and its parallels) is becoming very little from a value-added point of view.
