He’ll be playing Charlie... thoughts? https://www.broadway.com/buzz/191195/american-idol-winner-david-cook-will-make-broadway-debut-in-kinky-boots/
I certainly didn't see that one coming.
Didn't they learn not to put American Idol winners on Broadway after Home From The Holidays?!

This is just SAD. Someone needs to stop Telsey
Yeah I can’t imagine this will make an ounce of difference to the box office. What has he been doing for years?! Is he even relevant?

I've seen him in concert at least 6 times over the past 10 years and he puts on a really good show.He has a pretty large fanbase too called the "Cookistas".He originally majored in musical theater in college then switched to graphic design . He sang Music Of The Night when he was on Idol and I always thought that he'd be a good Phantom(especially in the restaged tour )
Updated On: 7/23/18 at 11:49 AMI actually thought this was a joke when I saw the title, since we were joking about in a Waitress thread about how we’re bringing stars from 2008 and American Idol. Well this is literally the 2008 American Idol Winner. Interested to see how he plays out.
Yeah. No one is doubting his talent. He’s got a great voice and he will nail those songs. But I don’t think it’s gonna ignite the box office at all. American Idol doesn’t sale. Heck, even Jennifer Hudson couldn’t make The Color Purple a finaicial hit!
Not sure if the timelines cross, will he be in the show with Wayne Brady, or is this after Brady leaves?
he is only scheduled for a run for 1 month.....

Cook and Brady will be Charlie and Lola together from April 3 to April 26.

I don't recall The Color Purple struggling while Hudson was in the show.
It didn't, but didn't ultimately turn a profit.

You can't compare an Academy Award winning Actress, and recent judge of The Voice (a show where the judges have more fame to gain than the contestants) to a has-been Idol winner. They were both on Idol - that's the only career comparison.
Also, say what you want about her acting since, but she's got that Oscar.

Kinky has long recouped, so as long as he keeps the show running for a month, he's done his bit.

Maybe it would have if she didn't leave, haha. There was certainly a marked decline in the box office after she left. Not enough to suggest the show was simply riding on her name, but enough to make a difference:

Was fortunate to win lottery tickets to the show last night, which I forgot until arriving at the theater that it was Cook's debut. Outside of some nerves, he was absolutely amazing. One of the best Charlie's I've seen. Great vocals and his acting was surprisingly good. Wayne Brady is so comfortable in the role he's blowing the roof of the theater. My only complaint would be a few of angels are likely past their primes having been with the show for too long and we're completely phoning it in last night. Maybe Mitchell needs to clean house with his angels and bring in a fresh group.
I loved Brady in the role the first time through, too!

I'm not a big fan or follower of Mr. Cook, but I was wondering how he did. Good to hear!
My friends and I spontaneously attended Kinky last night, not knowing it was David’s first show or really who he was ($30 standing room btw, great view)
We were all pretty disappointed in David. I was expecting great singing and thought he was often flat and his vocal placement was odd. However, we were pleasantly surprised with his acting. But being the winner of a famous singing competition, I really wasn’t impressed with his voice.
Wayne Brady was absolutely stellar. He was the first Lola I’d seen outside of seeing Billy twice. I’m glad to see he made it his own and was still incredible.
Kristin from Pentatonix was in great voice and was pretty funny (no one will beat Annaleigh though). Bowman was also a great Nicola
I’ll echo that there are 2 Angels who I believe have been in it from the start who looked bored as hell.
All-in-all, Kinky is still in pretty good shape.
I was surprised the show was sold out for his debut. He didn't get a big entrance applause (Brady did), so I wonder if it was a combo of Cook fans, Brady fans and the fact that it was Spring break.
Also, according to a friend and for anyone interested, they're selling SRO for tonight's show as well.
Has there ever been a bad Lola? I saw Billy Porter, J. Harrison Ghee and I;ve seen videos also of Todrick Hall. It seems as if you can't really lose in that role.
