They need to restore Broadway. Why did they take the street away? It has only opened the door to more garbage in Times Square. How do we get the City to put the street back? It will help getting rid of the stuffed animals, cartwheel guys, and others trying to shake down tourists.
Your post could be relabeled "How to Demonstrate a near total lack of awareness of either history or current events." LOL
Please tell us you're kidding.

OK, briefly, the answers to the two questions.
1. Because we want a city of people not cars. [There is far less garbage, btw.]
2. We don't because we prefer it this way, not just on Broadway. [It will not get rid of anything. It would shove it all back on the sidewalks.]
Now go study history and current events and come back when you have graduated.

Yeah, you do realize that Broadway the street is not just the theatre district/Times Square area right? And, people have always found a way to shake down tourists in Times Square. Hell, I have heard people say (and I tend to agree) that the costumed characters are the new squeegee guys.
Broadway Flash: …How do we get the City to put the street back?
How do we get the City to give the sidewalk space back to the pedestrians? I am so sick of getting to a corner in the theater district and having to hold my breath as I squeeze by filthy food carts that are noisy and an eyesore. Then I have to step over the blankets of counterfeit purses before someone asks me if I want to have my portrait done. I am just trying to get through the obstacle course to get to my show. Why can’t they put all the vendors on one side of Broadway that is closed to traffic or restrict them to Duffy Square?
When the show is over, now I have to subdue a panic attack as I exit the theater to be faced by a band of wild pedicab drivers all blocking critical space barking at us. How can this all be legal let alone safe?
A few weeks ago, weren’t you decrying the lack of green spaces in the Theatre District? And now you want more cars?

This OP is frequently starting threads with...dubious opinions (including, yes, the one about there not being any parks in the theatre district, and a negative one about migrants that was quickly deleted).

Is it really that impossible to just ignore this stuff?
Times Square is known as a tourist **** show. The only reason I enjoy going through it for shows is that I think of it like a game of frogger. None of the things the OP has complained about is a bother because…it’s irrelevant to me and I ignore it. Knockoff salesperson? They’re in my line of vision for two seconds and then it’s over. You act like you’re going through a minefield but it’s really just an obstacle course on a school playground.
How do we get the City to put the street back?
Totally. The day when "The City" scooped up all of Broadway and threw it away like the Genie does to the lamp at the end was WILDDDDDDDD.
I would like a park in the theatre district closer to 8th avenue. The other side of times square still has cars so I don't understand why we can't build Broadway back up. I miss the days of buying a ticket at tkts and popping over the street to the Palace. How is it legal for the costume characters to be in times square like this. and also the fake purses being sold. If they were all walking around in Central Park, they wouldn't last five days, so I don't understand why nobody speaks out against it. Also just saying theres not as much garbage as there used to be does not help the current situation. Theyre trying to pedestrianize around penn station, and people are not happy.

Your posts are becoming more naive and absurd rather than less. Buy up all the buildings and donate them to the city and they'll put a park on them. Nothing is stopping you from buying a ticket at tkts as many others do every day, and the Palace will reopen soon. Regarding the legalities, I again suggest you research and study and you too can become enlightened. I don't know with whom you associate but "people" are much happier with less cars, a condition that will continue to improve as we pedestrianize more streets and add congestion pricing to further discourage driving in the central business district. It sounds like you and some others would rather not be in the center of a large city. There are other choices.
Cities are for people, not motorized vehicles. Next up: two wheeled vehicles.
It's as simple as walking up 9th or 6th Avenue to avoid the circus of Times Square until you need to get to your theater.
I have several friends who drive into the city for work. The polling they did for pedestrianizing streets around Penn Station, people were split 50/50. Congestion pricing and pedestrianizing roads is not popular.

Who did this poll and who did they poll? LOL
Link in for us. It'll be part of your education.
Congestion pricing and pedestrianizing streets is not popular with people who drive into the city. Of course it isn't. They are the targets. Cities are for people, not cars.
If I'm going to a Broadway show and end up on Times Square, I usually feel I messed up... I try my best to route around it. I know a Broadway performer who ended up in a venue east of 7th, and they used to take an extra subway just to pop up on that side of things to not have to go through Times Square every day.
No there are legitimate arguments against green city initiatives, particularly when the move to pedestrianization and congestion pricing haven't been throughly worked through and questions asked about, for instance, non-tourists and people who have to get into the city to work. A lot of the chaos that people are describing here are less about pedestrianization than a failure of serious city planning before putting in place initiatives that sound and feel good in the moment.

There is much less chaos and much less danger now than there was before the plaza was extended across. It is very easy to forget. And congestion pricing has been and continues to be worked on and the necessary accommodations have been addressed. The sticking point is that there are still far too many cars coming into Manhattan for no good reason and that has to change. Most of the single occupancy cars I see coming through bridges and tunnels into Manhattan do not "have to get into the city to work" by car. And for those requiring special considerations, there are of course accommodations. But it seems like the people with bad and unhealthy habits who are the ones complaining. Remember when it was indoor smoking? It was going to be the death knell of restaurants and bars. LOL
