Ok, I really loved the Sweeney Todd film. Thought the acting was great all around but Depp did not give a performance worthy of the oscar over Daniel Day Lewis, George Clooney or Viggo Mortensen. These men gave more layered and raw performances.

This totally, absolutely, completely required its own thread. It's just so very unique that it could not have fit into ANY of the other threads. Wow.

The statue already has Daniel Day Lewis's name on it.

I concur. Depp doesn't warrant a nomination for SWEENEY -- nor do the rest of the cast, for that matter. This film is simply not Oscar worthy, in my opinion. Perhaps a few technical awards at most.

I hope HAIRSPRAY takes every award. Just to spite SM2.

While Depp wasn't one of my five favorite male performances of 2007, I think he certainly deserves consideration and a level of acclaim, and he will absolutely, NO MATTER WHAT, be nominated.

The Academy apparently feels bad for ignoring him all those years and to compensate, has in the last few years been chomping at the bit to nominate him for ANYTHING. They even nominated him for a mediocre performance in "Finding Neverland" over Paul Giamatti in "Sideways." Add the emotional complexity of Sweeney and the singing factor (whether or not you think he did a good job), he's an absolute lock.

That said, Daniel Day-Lewis in "There Will Be Blood" gives one of the all-time great performances, and will easily take the win.

B3TA07-

SM2 = StageManager2. An outspoken hater of Hairspray.

I am sure he will post "I HATED Hairspray!" soon, and if he doesn't it will be because I already did it for him.

The thing is, Sweeney is an emotionally complex character, I just didn't see that in Depp's performance. Also, Depp kept doing this jaw thing where he tightens it and it changes the way he says certain words. He did it in Pirates too - find a new gesture! Updated On: 12/23/07 at 02:45 PM

I think Depp is one of the most brilliant and versatile performers but this Oscar race is a no contest. Daniel Day Lewis will win another Oscar and Depp's time will come one day I'm sure.

Carter is the one who deserves the Oscar nomination.

I'm not completely sold on Daniel Day Lewis winning. Will anyone actually see that movie?

Depp will definitely be nominated, but it sounds like it's DDL's year.

There is also likely more momentum to honor DDL after having lost for Gangs of New York than for Depp.

i'm just glad the Academy finally took notice of Depp.

I think Depp definitely has a chance at winning the oscar. It's seriously about time for him to win one.

Don't forget they had to scratch DDL's name off the Oscar after he lost for Gangs of New York. Wasn't he a "shoe-in" that year?

Ijay,

Last evening we saw Sweeney and there was soo many people who sounded shocked it was a musical. You could hear guys saying, "WTF!" So, yes some people are morons, lol.

Bennet has it right: no one will see that movie. I'm not necessarily thinking Depp will take it, but I don't think Lewis is a shoo-in.

And I also agree Carter absolutely deserves a nomination, but sadly I don't think she will.

As much as I wanted him to win that year, I don't think he was a "shoe-in" by any stretch of the imagination. By the time the Oscars came around, there was a general sentiment, as I recall, that Adrien Brody would ride the Roman Pulanski coattails to a win.

at this point i think helena's best shot is at a supporting nom... but i dont think she'll get anything... she was also fantastic. well the whole cast was really. i hope it nabs a best picture nom, but with the SAG snub i'm feeling less and less hopeful...
