Exciting!
Crazy how many movie-musicals are coming out this year. I wonder if it's a record for the 21st century - maybe even longer.

Three of them were scheduled for last year, so does that count? Do you count only adaptations of stage musicals, or any movie that's considered a musical (which would include animated films)? It certainly does seem like a record for adaptations in both the 20th and 22st Centuries. But for musicals in general, we have a long way to go to beat 1930, which saw the release of 15 musical films.

I'd say that counts! I keep a ranking of movies by year, and I've been counting movies released in 2021 as 2021 movies, even if they were meant for 2020. Movies come out when they come out!
"Do you count only adaptations of stage musicals, or any movie that's considered a musical (which would include animated films)?"
I wasn't necessarily thinking of any strict guidelines when I said that. I suppose it would be interesting to look at the numbers from both angles - i.e when was the last time we had this many adaptations, and also when was the last time we had this many movie musicals overall?

Of course! There's no way we could beat the numbers from the old days, when movie musicals were a huge portion of the film industry. That's why I specified the 21st century, and by "even longer" I was mostly thinking in terms of the last 50 years or so, since movie-musicals weren't quite as big a thing in the 70s and onward (though we still have some iconic ones from that decade)

Not just September, but December will also be big with Steven Spielberg's version of West Side Story and MGM will release the film adaptation of the Off-Broadway musical Cyrano on Christmas Day. Tick...Tick...Boom! doesn't have a confirmed release date yet but Netflix is planning on a 2021 release.

But what’s interesting about this particular acquisition is that it’s a Fox title going to Amazon instead of one of the two streaming services that Disney owns outright. They also refused to air Love, Victor for its "too mature" content. Yet, Marvel movies show people getting their heads blown off. Interesting.
It appears that Bob Chapek has an issue with the LGBTQIA+ community. Does anyone else have thoughts on this?

I don't know what to think on this. It is odd. I did find this. https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/disney-ceo-shuts-down-anti-lgbtq-critic-n1156606

Tbh, Love, Victor is better suited on Hulu. I'm glad that they made the shift.

Posted: 5/20/21 at 10:23pmWhile yes, they have platforms, they can make more selling it to another platform rather than dumping in its own. If Amazon is willing to spend money to promote it, and they are definitely investing more in high-profile releases, I say go for it.

Disney+ has LGBTQ+ content. The tone of Love, Victor is different than High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Big Shot; I think Love, Victor is better suited at Hulu than at Disney+. Disney content as of late has been very matter-of-fact about their young characters having same-sex crushes, partners, and parents. In HSMTMTS alone, a boy plays Sharpay and is dating (and is shown kissing) a gay Mexican boy, and Olivia Rodrigo’s character has two moms. None of this causes any characters grief or shame. Representation has also been present in Disney and Pixar movies and shorts.
I’m excited this movie finally has a release date. I’ve been looking forward to it.

That town celebration number in the trailers looks like it's going to be big with a capital B. So happy that this movie won't be shelved for next year.
