I'd say that counts! I keep a ranking of movies by year, and I've been counting movies released in 2021 as 2021 movies, even if they were meant for 2020. Movies come out when they come out!
"Do you count only adaptations of stage musicals, or any movie that's considered a musical (which would include animated films)?"
I wasn't necessarily thinking of any strict guidelines when I said that. I suppose it would be interesting to look at the numbers from both angles - i.e when was the last time we had this many adaptations, and also when was the last time we had this many movie musicals overall?
It certainly does seem like a record for adaptations in both the 20th and 22st Centuries. But for musicals in general, we have a long way to go to beat 1930, which saw the release of 15 musical films."
Of course! There's no way we could beat the numbers from the old days, when movie musicals were a huge portion of the film industry. That's why I specified the 21st century, and by "even longer" I was mostly thinking in terms of the last 50 years or so, since movie-musicals weren't quite as big a thing in the 70s and onward (though we still have some iconic ones from that decade)
