Wow a two disc set! Why has this been so under the radar?
I'm thrilled and just pre-ordered a copy. Great price for two discs.

Another recording? I love the score, but we have three already, it's it's only been a little more than thirty years!
I would have rather seen a new recording of PIPE DREAM.

No complaints...but of all the Encores! productions of the past few years, why this?
I would still give my left...well...a lot...for a recording of last years Anyone Can Whistle.

Or even Kelli O'Hara and Will Chase in BELLS ARE RINGING?
I mean, this was a good MERRILY..., but there have been so many other fabulous stagings at Encores! other than this one. WHISTLE, BELLS and even that FOLLIES from years back all come to mind.

Did they already record it or are they recording it soon? This was a good cast, but not the best Merrily that has ever been done. Miranda's acting was good, but his singing was lacking. Either way, I'm glad we'll get a full recording of teh score with the original orchestrations.
Do they typically go into the studio for Encores! shows? I only fear that with time Encores! could become an excuse to get a new studio recording with stars done. I don't think it will.

with the original orchestrations.
They are promoting it as new orchestrations. Though they are fairly similar to the original.

I think any and all cast recordings are a good thing. Just my opinion.

Posted: 3/26/12 at 1:07amThe way I understand it is that they used the original orchestrations but used a bigger orchestra so technically they're "new" or at least "new-ish"

Posted: 3/26/12 at 1:09amI thought this thread was a joke. It'll be a nice recording to own, but I would have preferred Anyone Can Whistle.

Posted: 3/26/12 at 1:18amThis was out of left field. I'm happy to see it being done... but, like others have said, I wish Anyone Can Whistle was recorded. That show sorely needs another recording.

There are definitely new moments in the orchestrations. They can be heard in the Overture and Gussie's Growing Up. Gussie's Act 2 Opener (now named "Musial Husbands") has been completely rearranged and reorchestrated. I'm sure there are other moments, but those are the ones I picked up on. It will be nice to have these updated/expanded orchestrations on disc.

Great news! I am loving PS Classics, and they are quickly becoming my favorite record label!
As to everyone wondering why this show (and not "Pipe Dream", et al) is being recorded, it probably has to do with their relationship to Sondheim. Which makes me really wonder why they passed over "Anyone Can Whistle", which had some great singers in Donna, Raul, and (even though I don't really like her) Sutton. Maybe ACW's rights are tied up in that forever on hold Jay Records recording with John Barrowman?

Posted: 3/26/12 at 5:48pmPIPE DREAM, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, BELLS ARE RINGING, and even GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES could have been great, but this is nice too!

Posted: 3/26/12 at 6:00pmI was really hoping for Pipe Dream.

Posted: 3/26/12 at 6:08pmRemember that DRG has recorded most if not all of the Encores! albums. Maybe they'll do PIPE DREAM or BLONDES?

Posted: 3/27/12 at 12:16amI wouldn't be surprised if Tommy Krasker, Steve Sondheim, or MTI is funding. I wonder if this will become the licensed version?
