Has anyone seen this yet, who also saw it at the public? I would really love to get some perspective of comparison between them. For 2 reasons:

(1) i’m curious, because of the unusual circumstances surrounding this production and it’s loose “transfer”

(2) I’m trying to get a sense of whether I can/should see this again.

I have nothing but respect for the artistry and social significance behind this piece. The problem is, I have a really hard time with shows that are heavily reliant on narration. Especially when the narration is more poetic and less literal. It’s easier for me when the narration is more naturalistic, as if they’re really talking TO the audience and bringing us in.

So anyway, when I saw this at the Public I was incredibly bored through this entire show - I nearly fell asleep multiple times, and the rest of the time I was itching for it to end. This is definitely a “me” problem - I enjoyed the Tyler Perry film adaptation much more, because it was more scene-based.

But I’m wondering if I should give it another chance now that the piece has a different director. Would anyone say that that the text delivery is more naturalistic way? Or that the storytelling is more clear and accessible for someone who struggles with narration? Or any other encouraging change like that?

Again, I have no interest in tearing down this piece that’s clearly beloved by so many. Like I said, it’s a “me” problem - I’m just describing it so I can try to find out if I’d enjoy this incarnation more.

I saw it at the Public.  I preferred this production.  I liked the Public production, but I found the staging a bit claustrophobic and almost amateurish with the lighting, etc.  Having it in a proscenium gives the show much more space to breathe, which I think benefited it strongly.  And the lighting and choreography felt like they both contributed to a more cohesive atmosphere.

Regarding your question about "narration".  It's still a series of spoken word vignettes that are more poem-like than monologue-like.  That's the text.  So if you don't like that, I don't imagine that will change.  But it did feel more "theatrical" at the Booth than it did at the Public, to me at least.

Regardless of reviews I am wanting to see this. I love this piece. I actually love the film version even though I think it wasn’t well received. Kenita Miller is one of my favorite talents. So glad to see her back onstage.

I rushed for today’s matinee. The tickets are 27$. I walked up at 1:30pm and got a ticket for the 3pm show. Mezz full view - D 9. The Booth is so intimate that probably the last row mezz would be fine too. I think you should be fine getting to the theatre as the box office opens, or even a few minutes before. Mezz was maybe 60% full.

wonderful show. I too felt lost at some points, didn’t pick up on everything, but that’s a problem easily solved by reading the text again. Really brilliant performances, wonderful imagery, and beautiful choreography. The energy shared between the performers - and channeled out into the audience / brought back to them, was sooo beautiful. Inspiring to be in the same theatre as that. And the chorepoem is such a fascinating form. Very beautifully done.

I got a student rush for the matinee, L4 Orch Right, perfect view.

I mean, what a production. Its simple, but somehow stunning, the backdrops feels like paints that incorporates those women a beautiful way.

And the text is art, gets deeper and deeper, and the final monologue was perfection. And it was the definition of magic in theatre. Nothing but a single actor standing with the most devastating words. Kenita R. Miller, wow.

The entire cast is amazing, aside Miller, I think Sargeant and Okpokwasili were my favorites.

Highly recommend this one.

Saw this today, was a pretty mixed bag and it was EMPTY

when it hits it REALLY hits, but theres long stretches of just boring in between, and some of the references need to be updated, i doubt anyone in their 20s/30s knows who Willie Colon is

I also didn't understand having someone speak for the deaf actress during the women in purples monologue, but she spoke the rest of the show, I think it really undercut the point of the casting by doing that

Loved Stacey Sargent and the woman in green and red

Man, that makes me so sad that it was empty. But, it's Springtime and people are coming out of these last two trauma filled two years and still struggling. With all that is going on worldwide, people just are not interested in this. I loved it when I saw it what seems like a million years ago, but I would not see it now. I hope business picks up but I doubt it at this point FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE / WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF Previews

Was also weirdly a young high school group there today...not sure this was the right show for that

that being said as empty as it was the audience responded very positvely during the curtain call

A few days from opening, it feels like it's in pretty good shape. I don't know what any other productions have been like but I felt like the choreography helped fill the stage in what otherwise sometimes felt like a very small production. The Booth is relatively intimate but I wished there was either a bare stage or some kind of platform rather than those hanging panels that only made the actresses look smaller on that stage. The lighting was effective but I wish they had used something else to fill the space.

I thought D. Woods was the standout from the actresses with the most time on stage while Kenita Miller, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Alexandria Wailes felt like excellent featured players. I wanted more from all three of them. I was worried about being able to follow the poetry but I only lost the thread a few times. I zoned out the most during "sechita" but the majority of the poems are easy to grasp. It's more about whether you enjoy monologues and that one-woman play kind of delivery. If you don't like any narration, this probably isn't the show for you. Some parts felt a bit dated and more rooted in a specific moment. The more generic stuff about relationships still felt very relevant. To me, it felt like the show had been updated to a 90's aesthetic (music, movement, attitude) which gave it an in-between feeling of being somewhat contemporary but not rooted in 2022. There were wonderful joyful moments and well-acted monologues and very funny moments and delivery but I kind of wish some of the poems had been rearranged to make it flow better though I don't know how much they would have been allowed to do that. Based on what's on wikipedia, some of the poems were assigned differently in this production.

I got out at 9:45pm tonight but it definitely started late.

I was front row tonight thanks to the discount code that offered those seats for $20.

I was honestly blown away by the artistry on the stage and feel this is a must see production. I found the movement and the lyricism of the whole production to be a total triumph on the part of Camille A. Brown and the ladies are working their behinds off.

Special credit to Kenita Miller who, at 8 and a half months pregnant, has to be putting in the most work on stage since Audra McDonald in Shuffle Along. Also, I was quite prepared to throw a Tony at her for the sheer force of he “Ballad of Beau Willie Brown”. Even though I knew how that poem ended, she made it feel so fresh, raw, and visceral that I stopped breathing for a good 30 seconds. (Worth noting, Kenita mentioned she is due in a few weeks if you were hoping to see her before she goes out.)

I have a feeling this is a production that people are going to sleep on and they absolutely should not. To me, this is a real contender for Play Revival, Featured Actress (Miller), and possibly even Choreography if the Tony’s are feeling generous to tip their hat to a play.

Also, Uzo Aduba was at the show tonight and my companion greeted her like they were old friends after the show - which to my utter shock - they are, and I learned this after he told me when we left the theatre. (I didn’t recognize it was even her because of masks.)

How bizarre to have a Lady in Red leaving a week after opening. It's a significant part and sort of the bravura center of most productions. Kenita Miller is a stunner but I can't imagine how moving forward knowing she'd leave so soon was the best choice.

Oh, also, a sidebar:

I’ve now seen 12 shows at the Booth and nearly ever time, I’ve encountered an usherette, Marjorie, who is just the sweetest woman you will ever meet. I hadn’t seen her since before the pandemic and wondered what had happened to her. I was elated when I saw her and she gave me my Playbill. She hasn’t lost a step, and she told me she just turned 80 years old!! It made my heart so warm to see her again

She has an official standby, so maybe it might end up being like an Elizabeth Stanley/Heidi Blickenstaff situation.

All respect to those soon-to-be mamas balancing the physical demands of Broadway alongside pregnancy. It's Herculean. Not just Kenita Miller, but also LJ Behlmann, Beanie Feldstein's dresser (and wife to John Behlmann), who is in her third trimester.

I didn't know about Miller's pregnancy (and haven't seen the show), but people seem to be singling her out as a likely Tony nominee. The big problem there is that the nominators will see her, but hardly any voters will, so it will be nearly impossible for her to win. (And we know voters still work around the new rules)

Is this coming week Kenita Miller's final week of performances? Or is her departure date not a solid thing?

Saw the show last night, first saw a high school production a million years ago, it's funny how over two decades later, so many of the lines and moments from the show were still in my memory. But even then, there was so much in these actresses' performances that surprised, delighted, and moved me.

According to the COVID monitor, this is Kenita's last week. As a huge fan of hers from way back, I'm so glad I was able to come before she left, because even at  8 1/2 months pregnant, she is just phenomenal. How she delivers her final monologue, so grounded, so raw, so cathartic, the only emotion I can use is breathtaking. They better figure out how to give her that Tony live, so soon after she gives birth, because she's earned it.

And while Kenita is getting the lion's share of the praise, it's hard to imagine this show without any of these superstar actresses. Just one after the other, blowing me away with their vibrant talent. D. Woods and Okwui Okpokwasili were especially impactful, and must give special props to Lady in Blue understudy McKenzie Frye, who also left a lasting impression.

The set and lighting didn't quite leave the lasting impression, but that was fine, because under Camille A. Brown's direction and choreography, it was all about those women. If there was any justice in the world, Brown would be winning the choreography Tony. Just wonderful work.

Spotted in the audience: TV favorites Gina Torres and Bevy Smith.

There's an in-person general rush. $30 for seats in the side orch, and I think there's a higher price tier for the center orch.  Rush seats have been stellar by all accounts, since the show isn't selling.
