I read an early version of the movie script and they had a nonmusical scene with Angel and Collins before she (Angel) died, and I have to say since they cut Contact I was very partial to that scene, but as that was cut, yes in general I wish it had been kept more to its original form.
And it was kind of awkward sitting there listening to them speak lines..."Remember, you lived here?" "How could I forget? You, me, Collins...and Maureen." Couldn't help but giggle at those ones especially!

i giggled at
"You okay, honey?"
"I'm afraid so"...
generally when you are in shows, do you read the reviews? how do you react?

"I too have seen kids pushed too far by their parents, in regards to acting and musicals, etc.
I applaud you, Fredi for letting your children make their own decisions (regarding acting), but waiting until they are old enough to make informed decisions."
I've seen a lot of parents that won't let their kids go into it though...what does everyone consider old enough?
And ihearttheatre---It took all I had not to laugh out loud at that one. I absolutely loved it.

I know what you're talking about. During the opening lines, my friend was watching me like I was crazy because I was mouthing the words "December 24th, 9:00 PM Esatern Standard time...etc". It was ammusing.

I couldn't help myself.
heck, all the once-sung-now-spoken dialogue sounded funny
Nothing is now up, Fredi - I went bowling tonight and completely sucked, and now I am craving the cheesecake in the refrigerator.
We can indeed respect your position, but of course we might keep wheedling gently
In my opinion, some of the dialogue sounded a bit awkward. As if the actors wanted to sing it, but couldn't. However that is coming from someone who is very familiar with the OBCR, as most of you are, but many moviegoers are not. I went to watch Rent in a movie theater understanding that this is movie and as much as I wish it could've remained an completely true to the stage, I don't believe it would have gone over well with the "average person." Chris did what he needed to do.
And without the dialogue, we never would've have gotten "Merry Christmas, bitches!" from Jesse. Definitely one of my favorite lines in the movie!
dont worry i suck at bowling as well, I just had some thanksgiving leftovers..mmmm

I finally saw the movie and I agree it was odd to hear sung lines, spoken. To someone who's never seen the stage show, it wouldnt be at all out of the ordinary. Some of the scene transitions were also strange.... I had a few qualms with the movie, but on a whole I really enjoyed it. Obviously I'm very critical having seen it so many times and worked on the tour, but all and all, Im pretty impressed.
Btw, after that slightly convoluted post, hi Fredi!
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
But do you guys agree that it sounded funny because we're used to hearing it sung, and not because it was cheesy as dialogue? I think someone who's never seen the show would hear it and accept it, not go "oh, what weird dialogue."
I giggled inside at the "You can take the girl out of Hicksville, but you can't take the Hicksville out of the girl." line. It's one of my favorite lines in the show, and it was so odd to hear it not sung.
And, I'm not gonna lie, I would love a "tell all", but hey, it's not gonna happen. I can deal.

FREDDDDDDDDIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!! You're back darling! I hope you've been treating yourself well?
I agree, the actors made the dialogue sound like dialogue. Of course, it also helped that they changed it so it didn't rhyme.

Fredi- I was wondering if you went to school for theatre. If so, where did you go? If not... what did you major in?

To a newcomer, I think the dialogue would sound fine. For those of us who know how it sounds sung, it's odd. Not bad, just odd.

I thought all of the songs turned into dialog sounded funny too. It would've been stranger if it all rhymed though, but it was still weird to hear.

It wasn't that it was cheesy dialogue so much as we're used to hearing it sung. I too, was giggling inside at some of the lines.
The guy sitting next to me was pretty much cursing his wife before the movie for her dragging him to it... and towards the end he was one of the ones crying the hardest.
