I have to admit, I was doing that Leap of Faith shifty eyes thing for the rest of the day.
One thing that really bothered me about the movie more than the sung lyrics into dialogue (that wasn't so much of a bother as it was amusment) concerns how much the characters smoked.
Collins smoking weed is supported by his lyric in LVB "To Marijuana" but I found seeing Roger, Mimi and Angel smoking completely unnecessary and don't understand why they did.

yes! the fire drove me nuts! they were like, hm, we have no heat and burn our stuff, so lets throw it out the window! i know it's probably symbolic or something...but it just made no sense to me!
ohhh, the facial expressions!

iheart - GREAT QUESTION! I asked myself the same thing as I watched it...
and I thought that Joanne probably footed the bill as well.. it's alluded to in the stage play though never confirmed...
i'm sure that's a reality i worked off of - but never really thought about it completely until i saw it on film...
funny huh?
Hi Fredi! Just wondering, what did you think of Idina's behind?
Hi Fredi!
It's great to see you on the boards again!
When I went to see Rent the movie, I had a very bad experience with some girls sitting behind me. I posted about it in The Stupid People at Rent thread(Sorry, don't know how to link)
Anyway they made some very rude and ignorant comments, and ewwwed whenever Jessie ,Wilson and Idina and Tracie kissed.
Did you experience any homophobic, and stupid people in any of your performances in the audience, or were people cheering too loudly for you to hear them?
Glad your back!
Lara
I don't advocate smoking, but it was "normal" for the place and for the time period.
Personally, I though Collins smoking pot thoughout practically the entire movie was hilarious. But that's just me.
Well, better Roger smoking than shooting up heroin, yes? *shrug*
Fredi, how did you justify Maureen and Joanne meeting in the first place?

yes. And aren't Joanne and Maureen not getting along so well? Why would Joanne put out that kind of cash for her? And if they HAD that kind of cash..wouldn't they be, I don't know, helping their friends and the homeless people they're fighting for?
I really wanna see the movie now, so I can't say anything about spoken vs sung lines. However, in the trailer when Rog asks Mimi to come to dinner..I wish they had kept "Dinner party?" "That'll do.." in, but hey we can't have it all.
Also...haven't seen much from the trailers...but that loft looks freaking awesome! Maybe I am just seeing a little of it, but seriously...I don't remember Avenue A,B, or C, having any lofts like that.
Greetings Fredi and all, just got back from bowling...in the same game 2 strikes a spare and a 68 score
How is everyone's night? What are we discussing?
Just reading the "Rent Welcome Wagon" thread and I was wondering if you're still involved with the Arts in Education program you mentioned?
I completely agree with you about kids getting excited about learning once you give them a chance to do creative things....something they dont' get to do much of anymore thanks to state-mandated standarized testing (but don't get me started on that one...I could go on for days). I can't wait until next week when my kids at school get to present their versions of famous ballet stories...it's usually a blast!
Wickedrentq, I just went bowling too! I suck.

It was the really little things that bothered me, like
"I've hired an engineer.......He's three hours late." It's she. I was kind of irritated by that. Or, like....."Food of love, emotion, mathematics, isolation, rhythm, power, feeling, harmony and heavy competition" vs "feeling, power". I could let the bigger things go a lot easier.
shiksa_goddess...i think there's another thread about that...maybe the cat scratch one? someone (and i think fredi even talked about it too) that there were a bunch of like industrial buildings that had huge lofts that people really squatted in...i don't remember...but i'd point you in the direction of that thread (i'm almost positive that's the one)

still on the "who paid thing"
you know - i still haven't worked this out.. JoAnne is a public defender... she didn't make that kind of money...
*arrrrggghhh* this bugs me as much now as it did then - i think that's why i had to forget about it and just do the scene....
re: -smoking
HELLO - PEOPLE SMOKE - and broke artists smoke ALOT in spite of how much cigs cost... it's still "cheaper than food"
and last but not least...
what do i think of Di's butt?
looks better in person.
Sorry I had to use What happens at Rent stays at Rent as my message quote. Do you mind Fredi?

the first time, i was just in a daze. i didn't really remember anything afterwards.
the second time i really SAW it.
the third time, i paid attention to facial expressions and the backgroud/minor characters more. there's a ton going on in the background that is utterly hilarious.
iheart, I don't know the specifics behind the engineer he/she deal, but I do know that on tour Angel says "power, feeling" vs. "feeling, power" similiar to the change "You can take the girl out of JERSEY" instead of Hicksville

Wow, I leave for a little while and a huge amount of posts.
Upon reading and reflecting on the post about starving artist lifestyle and whatnot, from someone who has actually experienced it(as opposed to my comfortable middle-class mother)...
I still want to do it. Can't be happy any other way.
And if I'm not making much money on the stage, well hey, I love doing tech, too. Lights and props and costumes and makeup. I've done all of the above for shows at my school that I'm not in, and while I love being onstage just a tiny bit more, I love all aspects of theatre and its impossible for me to want to do anything else. The rush is second to none/
Among other random changes, right before Take Me or Leave me Maureen says what sounds like "I didn't stay and dance at the Kink Club..." instead of "Cl*t Club". Trivial, yet I always found the original line hilarious.
