There was a show that did a great cover of that song?

I think it has all to do with the fact that nowadays people have the attention-span of a goldfish.

People are desperately, constantly looking for new hypes and things. I see it on facebook and youtube all the time.

So, no matter how great something is, after a few months people want to move on. Because although there was a slight dip in the 2nd season. After that it got much better, even better than the first season. But I guess it is too tiresome for some people to pay attention to something that is not new anymore.

Or good.

That's why Law & Order only lasted a year or two as well.

Speaking about doing the same trick every episode.

The first half of the show concentrates on the investigation of the crime by the police, the second half follows the prosecution of the crime in court.

I guess crime shows are just popular as they keep on getting away with this. And it shows how simple many people are.

That explains a lot. I think the clever writing in Glee goes over the head of most people.

Just like the point of my previous post?

I like now how your argument is that its the AUDIENCE's fault. It is never the audience's fault -- any business needs to constantly address the needs of its customer base.

And really, Dave, you are too funny.

I guess it is all a matter of taste.

There are reasons why people prefer McDonalds over good food, why certain people with no talent are famous and people with talent are not, why tv series, soap opera's like East Enders and HollyOaks are more popular than series like Prison Break etc.

which only means that popular is not always better.
I tend to find myself not liking "things for the masses". Not because of that fact, but it's just a thing I notice.

I tried to listen to Il Divo. They are very popular. I find there is way too much wrong with their voices and choices. Many better singers in that category out there.

It is not the "fault" of the public. It is just that people are what they are. Something great can be reasonably or not even popular because the masses are not into it.

It also has to do with place and time. If a "sound of music" movie revival was made, I'm sure it would be full of beats and ad-libs. It's what the masses want nowadays or else they fall asleep. Better? That's the question.

It's about personal taste and perceptions of beauty and quality and the recognition of social and character intentions in the case of series and films. Most series lose me within 15 minutes, Glee does not.
If it goes over the head of many others, for whatever reason, that's not even important.

"I think it has all to do with the fact that nowadays people have the attention-span of a goldfish."

I don't necessarily believe this is true. (I do have a very short attention span but that's beside the point). There are many shows that people have been watching for ages and are only getting more and more popular. How I Met Your Mother is in its 8th season, people still watch that. Pretty Little Liars is in its fourth season, and is as popular as ever. Both of those shows are miles above Glee - funnier, more character development, better continuity...

Drama, I invited all points of view and expected all points of view, however the small argument we had about my personal life has absolutely nothing to do with the show. I don't mind comments against the show, it wouldn't be a discussion board if everyone had the same opininon.

No offense Emma, but to me Pretty Little Liars is one of the most boring and overrated shows on television right now. Some of you are talking as if Glee had lost their audience, it hasn't! It is still one of the most popular shows out there and for true Gleeks it's still as magical. Count me in as those who prefer seasons two, three, and four over the first.

FYI every girl in my school LOVES the spice girls, specially that one song. Many of my favorite movies were made before I was born so what's your point? Why are you even posting here, since as you, oh so eloquently expressed, you're tired of of the discussions on this subject. Why do you watch the show and pay such careful attention to detail if you HATE IT so much??

I never said I was tired of the discussions on this subject. I'm tired of reading the SAME thing over and over about it. I still watch the show because I don't like giving up on shows that I've started. Plenty of people hate-watch shows and this has now become my #1 show to hate-watch. I pay careful attention in order to back up my points in arguments which seems to be very helpful in this instance. You don't seem to be that aware of the show since you don't even know that Idina will return this season.

Get a life, all that jizz (thanks, Jordan).

No, I think Glee is way too sharp, smart, witty, clever and emotionally confronting for the masses.

I guess if Glee is too smart for the masses, then every single piece of merchandise sold in stores for ordinary people needs to be taken off the shelves. That would be a great investment. I will sell ALL Glee merchandise in a store for people who think their taste is better than the rest of the world. I will obviously have to give a quiz to everyone before they go in because I can't just have ordinary, McDonald's loving people shop in there.

"Get a life, all that jizz (thanks, Jordan)"

You spend so much time being miserable watching and analyzing a show which you hate, just to come here and post about how much you hate it and you're telling me get a life??

Maybe you're used to bullying and scaring away posters on this boards, just know that it's not going to work with me, so don't waste your time. You can use that valuable time to rewatch past glee seasons and post even more hateful things about it on this board, which I'm sure will make you feel way better about yourself.

What I find fascinating is that Glee has, essentially, turned into what it undoubtedly began as a parody of.

You are aware that Glee has had more Billboard 100 hits than the Beatles and Elvis Presley, right?

It's a massively popular franchise.

Who the hell do you think is watching it and buying the albums and the singles and the shirts and DVDs, Dave?

I don't think I ever said that I was miserable watching the show. Perhaps you need to learn the difference between hate and misery. I actually think the show is hilarious in its stupidity, as are you.

CB, Since I actually feel sorry for you, I'm ignoring your comment.

Dave, I pretty much agree with everything you've said except for the masses argument. While the show occasionally demonstrate high artistic qualities, it is very much a commercial show. That's what I think makes it so revolutionary and relevant, it's no just a musical theatre/music themed show, it's a musical theatre/music themed show that is surprisingly immensely popular. That's the reason why it introduces this generation to broadway classics and, as Eric pointed out, even new contemporary artists, because of it's capacity to reach the masses without sacrificing its artistic value.
