I guess it is all a matter of taste.
There are reasons why people prefer McDonalds over good food, why certain people with no talent are famous and people with talent are not, why tv series, soap opera's like East Enders and HollyOaks are more popular than series like Prison Break etc.
which only means that popular is not always better.
I tend to find myself not liking "things for the masses". Not because of that fact, but it's just a thing I notice.
I tried to listen to Il Divo. They are very popular. I find there is way too much wrong with their voices and choices. Many better singers in that category out there.
It is not the "fault" of the public. It is just that people are what they are. Something great can be reasonably or not even popular because the masses are not into it.
It also has to do with place and time. If a "sound of music" movie revival was made, I'm sure it would be full of beats and ad-libs. It's what the masses want nowadays or else they fall asleep. Better? That's the question.
It's about personal taste and perceptions of beauty and quality and the recognition of social and character intentions in the case of series and films. Most series lose me within 15 minutes, Glee does not.
If it goes over the head of many others, for whatever reason, that's not even important.
