I was really surprised to see that Mary Louise Wilson was not in the Sunday matinee performance of Grey Gardens (1/14/17). Also, if you've never seen it before, you're not going to know that she plays "Edith in Act 2," as was posted in the lobby. They don't say that "Mary Louise Wilson" was out, they just write the character's name. How misleading!

There wasn't an understudy slip in your playbill?

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

There was, however I only saw the Playbill once I was sitting in the theater already. I could have then gone to ask for a refund, but it seemed too late.

I don't think you could've gotten a refund, seeing that Wilson's name is not above the title.

That's a shame. She will probably win the Tony Award.

She probably will, as will Ebersole.
The post above is right-you can only get a refund/exchange if the performer is over the title. (In this case, Christine Ebersole)

Understudies will surprise you with how good they are

Case in point - we saw Tarzan today with one of Janes understudies playing the role. Fantastic

Yes, it was Dale Soules. But Mary Louise Wilson is the best.

Okay, let's say that Mary Louise Wilson IS the best.

Now, how was Dale Soules? Did she do a good job in your opinion? How was the audience reaponse to her performance? You know, things like that. re: Grey Gardens 1/14/07 absence

As I recall, The Magic Show was an engaging piece of fluff. It definitely did not warrant a 2nd or 3rd viewing IMO

Roxy, which understudy did you see as Jane today? My friend's cousin is Jane's understudy. I met her once a long time ago.

Ahh will someone please tell us how Dale was?!?! I have seen Mary 3x and she is fabulous but I am dying to know how Dale does with this role.

...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

I saw the show this past Thursday the 11th. I was dissapointed to see That Miss Wilson was out but I have to say that Dale did a WONDRFUL job. The relationship work did not suffer at all. She is a great actress. Ms. Ebersole gave what I personally feel is the best live performance I have ever seen. Great to see an ORIGINAL piece of musical theatre with stellar acting values. The rickety set that wobbled every time it moved, another story but it was handsome to look at in Act 1.

I saw Dale yesterday. She was AMAZING. It was my first time seeing the show so nothing to compare her to but I can't imagine how the role could have possibly been played any better!

"Great to see an ORIGINAL piece of musical theatre..."

As much as I love Grey Gardens, it isn't exactly "original" in that it too is based on previous source material.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Thanks, everybody! I am curious to see Ms. Soules now! Good for her. I was just a kid when I saw her in The Magic Show. It's so great to find out that actors are still alive and kickin'. re: Grey Gardens 1/14/07 absence

A musical based on a documentary as opposed to a Movie is what I was referring to...Original in my book.

Dale was FANTASTIC. I saw her Saturday night and i was in awe of how great a performance she gave as an understudy. Her vocals were as good as MLW....

Erin Davie was the upset of the show...
