I saw this on Saturday night. It was exceptional. I was in Center Orchestra Row B, and though the back stage was hard to see, as was their feet lol, it was a phenominal seat to see their faces and hear the orchestra throughout the show. Everyone was superb, and as the show neared its end, Mrs Lovett was not getting laughs but a sense of dread did creep into it all--very chilling. I thought it was amazing. There was no "Break" in character during priest song as some have said. Understudy was in for Joanna and she was great. what a powerhouse of a show.
That depends entirely on how long the strike lasts, and how willing people are to cross the line the longer it drags on. The way the studios are responding, and the WGA is (rightfully) not backing down, I'm hearing this could easily stretch into February. The good news is, not only will you be more likely to see him if that's the case, but a lot of actors -- assuming SAG-AFTRA strikes in solidarity, and that's going to a vote soon -- will be looking to work and have only theater as an outlet, so Broadway might well be a very star-studded place come October.

and Jenna deWaal is subbing for her. Diana does Sondheim!
I was at the matinee today. Show was great, but good lord, the crowding was horrendous. Line to get in was almost to the end of the block when I arrived around 1:45 and super slow, show started at 2:14, ended at 5. is it always that bad? Is it a function of the theater itself or are there just too many slow-moving tourists out right now?
I was there tonight. Yes the line to get in was long but once the doors opened it started moving and the bathroom line at intermission wasn’t terrible but I was near the front. Looked to be sold out and the audience was eating it up. I think there were a couple school groups and they cheered throughout but weren’t disruptive in any way. The show was great. Having never seen it before I have nothing to compare it to but really enjoyed it. Annaleigh Ashford was hilarious and I think she may be walking up next Sunday to collect another Tony. Josh Groban has a voice like butter and commanded the stage. The man can act which was nice to see as I’ve seen some shows where they bring in a name who can sing but leaves little to be desired. With Ruthie out with Covid, Jeanna was on for the Begger Woman and was good, I was a little bummed not to see Ruthie but the part is in very good hands. Having seen Gaetan in Les Mis it was nice to see him back home on stage after his success with Netflix. He can sing, and can hold his own and then some with the likes of Annaleigh Ashford.
the stage door was civilized. All the principles came out and signed except for Jordan. I still think Into the Woods will win the Tony but this is a very good revival and a great night at the theatre.
So bummed about Ruthie...I have tickets for tomorrow night and was so looking forward to seeing her. Hope she recovers fully and that it didn't spread to the rest of the cast!
I’m surprised they are stagedooring right now since multiple cast are out with COVID with the Tonys around the corner. (Jonathan Christopher is out as well and I think one other).
Not trying to engage any discourse - I just know shows with outbreaks have usually suspended that to prevent potential spread.

Saw the show tonight and mostly loved it, with a few quibbles that others have pointed out elsewhere in this thread. As noted above, I was disappointed not to see Ruthie, who I loved in King and I and in Chess at the Kennedy Center. Jeanna de Waal was fine I guess, but nothing that would cause me to look at that performance (or that role) as Tony material. And unfortunately I don’t think I’m going to be able to catch it again in this run. So my question for those who have seen it: can you please describe, in as much detail as possible (with spoiler tags as necessary), what Ruthie does with the role that makes her performance so special? I saw the original and know that Merle Louise won the Drama Desk for it, but I don’t remember her performance well enough (and she’s not on the Hearn/Lansbury tour video). I’d love to at least vicariously experience Ruthie’s performance through others’ descriptions. Thanks.
I saw this at the matinee yesterday and it seemed like everyone was in, including Ruthie! I thought it was really well done. I saw the Doyle production and I have to say, hearing the full orchestra, and seeing the full cast, was great. The Doyle production was interesting, but I liked this better.
The theater was absolutely packed and the audience was well behaved, although I haven’t seen so many people a) being seated late and b) getting up in the middle of the show in a long time. I think if someone arrives 40 minutes late, they should be made to watch the show on a close circuit TV in the lobby until intermission!
I'd heard that Ruthie was back, and am delighted she's recovered. My question: will she be rehearsing Piazza this week? I have tickets for the 6/7 Wednesday matinee of Sweeney, and have lately presumed she'd be on her scheduled out from Sweeney.
Also, is Piazza sold out?
