Hana Sharif out as Artistic Director at Arena Stage

They had only announced half a season for next year too. I think they’re having financial troubles. Their shows haven’t sold well recently with the exception of Swept Away. I don’t think CrazySexyCool is filling the coffers as well as they expected because of Chili’s political views.

Hana had big shoes to fill after Molly Smith’s retirement. It’s tough to do that plus with all the economic chaos in DC now outside of her control. DC has the highest unemployment rate in the country. It will be interesting to see what Arena does from here.

Interesting but welcome. Sharif’s departure should not be surprising to anyone familiar with the internal reality (and horror) of her tenure. Arena Stage saw extraordinary staff turnover, persistent instability, and a leadership culture that left many people exhausted, confused and demoralized. She was left completely unchecked by the board or anyone else. This was not occurring in a vacuum either; her prior institution in St. Louis later faced a $2.5 million budget shortfall and canceled productions. Arena Stage had a $1.8m deficit last season according to its most recent 990.

Any public outrage seems largely to be coming from people who admired her work from a distance, not those who had to work inside the organization she “led.”

Very interesting. Would be very curious to hear more.

Extreme spending (more will come out, but it’s big ugly) against all advice or wisdom including on expensive hotels and trips for her and her staff (the ones she liked). Poor treatment of staff she didn’t like where half or more have left or been pushed out. Treating production members like unintelligent workers rather than the artisans and craftspeople they are. Those are just a few. I heard she’s been under investigation on and off over the last two years and lawyers have been involved.

Yes, word on Sharif is not good. My understanding is this was not a resignation in truth - but she was given that opportunity. They should beg Molly back to firm things up for a few years (if she'd even be willing) -- then get the RIGHT person at Arena. it's a wonderful space and place. They need to hire based on talent and ability and not for other reasons.

You're a self hating racist and it's really sad to continuously witness.

When the full story comes out, the people who knee-jerk rushed to defend her based on optics are going to look really stupid.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Exactly.

Ensemble 95 (who enjoys the neutral name to not have much of a real identity) is a suspected AI bot (see other posts) or a jerk who only goes after a select view people to elevate themselves while claiming racism etc (who don't know the real story). The reasons have nothing to do with race despite what people may want to claim.

The truth will come on this one.

There is a fair amount of “it’s about time she was let go” sentiment coming from those allegedly in the know. This Reddit thread in particular is interesting: LINK

My Facebook is filled with people of color in the theatre industry calling racism, but it seems like that is greatly over-simplifying the situation.

Hey simple minded one. You hating yourself and your skin is what I’m talking about. I’ve also heard Shariff was let go because she’s not good. I’m not saying it had to anything to do with her race. I’m saying it’s sad to see a self proclaimed “Black woman” suggest her Blackness it’s why she was hired.

Deflect with calling me a bot all you want. I wish you were a bot, it would make your sad commentary more explainable.

Name calling? -really?. Calling me "simple minded" and saying I hate my skin ? are you serious? offensive. and its surprising you don't know better - racist too. - when the topic you are responding to has NOTHING to do with race. No one said any of that - and your conclusions re my comment are again incorrect. You heard or know nothing of the matter - or you wouldn't have responded or made the conclusions the way you did. Get lost. And please be less hateful to people of color. You're longer worth my response.

In my multiple interactions with her, Sharif has been rude, callous, and from what I can see, is an ineffective leader.

Damn Yankees did well financially, as far I know, but that was just about her only good move. Swept Away was programmed by the previous artistic director, so Sharif gets no credit there. Sharif created a lot of frivolous waste of money and resources.

I know firsthand that the board told her to resign or she'd by fired by July 15th.

As AC126748 said - I think that people are going to realize certain things as more information trickles out. And I hope so.

Yes, it's true that black women should be represented in higher numbers in positions like this - but Hana just isn't the one to do it. She isn't cut out for a job like this. And the people crying that "they'll never let a black woman succeed", etc - while there may be historical truth to that, it simply isn't the case here. She failed because of her own lack of ability, not because of her skin color. And the fact that she's essentially run two other institutions into the ground before this shows that she's not a good choice for a position like this. It's baffling that she was even hired, to be honest.

Hana Sharif out as Artistic Director at Arena Stage

A press release just came out:

(Washington, DC) Hana S. Sharif publicly announced her decision to step down as Artistic Director of Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, effective June 30, 2026. The Board of Trustees is grateful for her contributions over the last three years and wishes her well in her future endeavors.

Arena Stage remains steadfast in our collective commitment to sharing the transformative power of theater with audiences in our nation’s capital and focusing on the theater’s next 75 years. This fall, the Board of Trustees will begin planning for an Artistic Director search as part of a larger strategic planning process.

Arena Stage will continue to be led by Edgar Dobie, President and Executive Producer, who joined Arena Stage in 2009, and a first-class senior management team. Arena Stage will move forward with Act I of the planned 2026/27 Season and will engage an artistic advisor to work with Dobie and the artistic team on season planning for Act II and the following season.

Just wanted to point out that three days after the NY Times broke this story on June 26, our alleged paper of record here in DC, The Washington Post (AKA The Bezos Bust), has still not published a word about the change of leadership at Arena. A search on their website for "Hana Sharif" returns two articles from 2023, after it was announced that she had been appointed Artistic Director.

This story is unfolding practically in the Post's backyard, yet they are silent even after the Times cleaned their clock. Pathetic.

I'm not surprised one bit by their lack of reporting on this. They gutted their arts and culture coverage this year, laid off many staff members including their theatre critic, and made it clear that this kind of reporting isn't important to them.

This is sad. Arena was a great place under the leadership of Molly Smith. Great shows, full houses, financial success, Broadway transfers, happy staffs etc. There was much change over after her departure due to Sharif and it seems the re-hires under her leadership were not good either. (and primarily, unhappy) Hopefully they will turn such a great venue around - it's possible. The building will be a better place with this change in the long run.

I almost wish there was BTS reporting on this to provide a little clarity cuz all the side talk and chatter and think pieces are getting a little annoying.

Of course, it's none of our business, and jobs going south often have a lot of different sides and nuance. But this speculative period right now is annoying.

Exhibit A (or maybe we're on to Z already):

Fxck you White American Theatre by Nataki Garrett Myers

#21

Hana Sharif out as Artistic Director at Arena Stage

I can understand the upset. But that article is hateful in and of itself. Myers does not have a much of a leg to stand on herself). But this is all about the job Hana didn't do - and chose not to do, well; -- and in the long run (after years at both institutions) put her in these positions. People of all ethnicities, religions and levels of her teams and staff agree on this, for the most part - unless they were close to or were propped up by her.

It's easy to be angry (and in many instances understandably so) but not here - it's harder to accept the truth of the situation that led to this and similar change ( in St. Louis).

Even more interesting is Myers hides all of the posts (at the bottom of the comments section) that do not agree with her. She appears to enjoy an echo chamber.

Myers neglects to mention that under her tenure as AD at Oregon Shakespeare, the company almost shut down entirely. While she had to contend with issues outside of her control, like COVID and wildfires, she refused to help right the ship and programmed seasons that did not appeal to the theater's core audience right when they needed those audiences most. They've since managed to make a remarkable turnaround.

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

I’m not sure how Nataki Garrett Myers’ angry, ranty essay is going to help anyone - including her. Yikes.

Anyway, it seems pretty clear at this point that Hana Sharif was disliked by a lot of people at Arena from the board down to her subordinates. The company was also losing a lot of money. These two things combined will get most people in leadership roles fired from their job. Was the fact that she is a black woman a contributing factor to her being disliked by colleagues and donors? Maybe? Who knows. “Everyone’s a little bit racist.” But my guess is if that she were nicer to people and her shows were better received, she’d still be working there.

#25

Hana Sharif out as Artistic Director at Arena Stage

Nataki Garrett bungled her tenure at OSF so badly that she basically made herself unemployable and had to rebrand herself as an executive coach. (Sharif is one of her clients, prominently featured on her website — natch.) She did experience genuine racism during her time in Ashland, but that doesn’t obscure the fact she was woefully unqualified for her position and likely would have been relieved of her duties had she tried to stay. She really is the last person who should be weighing in on this situation as she has less than zero credibility in this area, not to mention deep conflicts of interest.
