Hard to believe it’s been this long already. Congrats everyone!
Can’t believe it either! WOW! This show was so much fun when it opened, especially with the OG cast! Truly a remarkable experience!

Aaron Tveit gave a speech at the curtain call to mark ''Moulin Rouge's'' 5th anniversary since it opened in 2019. For those keeping track, this marked the show's 1,421st performance. Aaron saluted the 8 members of the original cast, including himself, who are still with the show. Plus, he said there are 25 people backstage who have been with it since the opening.

It’s a little silly for shows to celebrate anniversaries seeing as they were closed for a year and a half…focus only on the milestone number of performances.
or, as a friend who shares in this complaint quipped yesterday, “if the actors & crew weren’t on payroll for 5 years straight, it’s not an anniversary” :)
Tveit mentioned in his post-show speech last night that they had just finished their 1,421st Broadway performance.
I mean, it’s still the anniversary of the show’s opening regardless of COVID. That’s how anniversaries work. Pretty much every Broadway show that has had a milestone anniversary since COVID has just ignored the shutdown in its accounting. Wicked, The Lion King, Chicago, Hadestown, Aladdin, and now Moulin Rouge. It just gets messy and complicated when factoring in the shutdown. Maybe it’s a bit of false advertising to say “Celebrating [insert number] Years on Broadway,” but I don’t see any reason why shows shouldn’t celebrate the anniversary of their show’s opening. It’s still an anniversary.

…but didn’t they have like 18 months off due to COVID??
Why is that time counted????

The fact is it IS 5 years since ''Moulin Rouge!'' opened on Broadway on July 25, 2019. No one's pretending that the COVID hiatus didn't happen. As Tveit noted in his speech, last night was its 1,421st performance. That would be an achievement in any circumstance. Let's not take for granted that there were Broadway shows that closed because of COVID and never reopened. Or the ones that returned, but closed shortly thereafter. I believe ''Moulin Rouge!'' is the only show that opened in that 2019-20 season that is still running on Broadway, so, yes, that IS worth celebrating. Especially in the wake of the COVID hiatus when we didn't even know when or IF live theater would be returning anytime soon.

Yeah, celebrating the 5th anniversary of its opening is far, far cleaner than deducting the time lost to COVID and then coming up with a new date to celebrate.
I agree. If we were planning a celebration for a long-time worker at, say, a restaurant, I don't think anyone would insist that we add the COVID closure period to the anniversary date.
I would even take this a step further and say that the “Celebrating 5 years on Broadway” isn’t even an entirely disingenuous advert line on the basis that there are multiple other major musical productions Moulin Rouge was in competition with that did end up shuttering as a direct result of the pandemic (notably Mean Girls and Frozen). Whereas, Moulin Rouge was popular enough and had viability and public interest that far exceeded each of those shows. Otherwise, well, those shows would’ve reopened too.

Good point. The important thing to me is the number of shows, over 1400 is impressive especially since so many recent winners don't make 1,000.

In fact, with this week, they just beat How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying out of the top 30 of Best Musical Winners with most performances, and soon will also overcome The Sound of Music.
Great news! Have seen MR multiple times, including the Re-opening performance in Sept 2021, coming out of Covid. That performance was like a rock concert! Just saw it again in May, as well.
