I'll be going to London next month and thinking of also going to Paris for a few days and noticed that there's a production of Hello Dolly! in Paris right now at the Theatre Lido Champs Elysees in honor of the 60th anniversary.
I'm curious if any of you (Dollypop maybe?) have seen this production of Hello Dolly in Paris and what you thought of it (and how it compared to the Broadway revival back in 2017-2018.)
For any of you also going to Paris within next 6 weeks, the last performance of this Hello Dolly! is March 2nd, 2025.
I haven't seen it first hand sorry but I've heard from a friend of friend that it's worth seeing. My experience with the kind of culture of UK/Europe artists you will likely not find the production holds a candle on the 2017/2018 production though - after watching the Staunton production last year it became obvious to me that everything about that production was very special and not something that can easily be repeated.
I have seen Caroline O'Connor in a lot of shows over the years (e.g. she did Anastasia on Broadway but I've also seen her in Anything Goes, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman). She is perhaps the closest thing to describing an Australian Patti LuPone/Bernadette, with charisma and a wonderful singing voice - which Sondheim complimented when she did Sweeney Todd in Paris many years ago.
I personally would see it if I was in Paris. I also kind of enjoy the novelty of seeing shows in different countries.
If you do, I'd love to hear what you think!
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I saw it, and the Staunton production. I enjoyed both but Paris was far better. Joyful, beautiful, well choreographed. Caroline O’Connor was a perfect Dolly. 5 stars!
This is the same theatre that has that water feature/show, right?
