"You might hate me for saying it but it has to be said."
How many times does it need to be said?
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
Amazing that you can tell how a 2 hour film is going to be from a 2 minute trailer.
Actually, based on the trailer it looks as if Collins and Mark may have some affectionate moments. They are somewhat touchy towards the end of Finale B.
Obviously, the studio has decided that the Collins/Angel relationship is too problematic because they don't feel that main stream audiences would accept a latino love interest so they need to focus on Collins/Mark as a couple. They feel that people aren't ready to handle a latino gay lead so they need to at least replace him with something more "consumer friendly."
I totally understand your position, art2. If there is anything worse than a libido-liberal it's a Lack-of-Latino-Liberation Libido-Liberal.
Despite not having actually seen the film this is obvious by watching a very choppy 2 minute trailer. You might me for saying it but it has to be said. Updated On: 8/27/05 at 10:15 PM
The new trailer focuses on exactly what the movie is about: eight friends, one extraordinary year. Love. Hope. Struggle. Triumph. Not gay people dying of aids.
Art, when I see this film in cinemas, I am going to come back to this thread and laugh. When I see 'Collins' and 'Angel' very much in love, on screen, in a major motion picture, I am going to think of you, and I am going to laugh and laugh and laugh at your absolute unwillingness to see anything past your proverbial blinders. You, sir, are the hypocrite, and you are quickly painting yourself into a corner. Kindly go and stay there; the libido liberals will not get to you in your own little corner, because they really would much rather ignore you.
When it comes to fairness and justice, I am like a dog to a bone. Pillory me if you wish...that's your prerogative. But I stand by what I've said and hold my head up high on it. The facts of the trailer have been my starting point, pure and simple.
I am also willing to bet that, in the movie, the male-female and female-female aspects will be romanticized and focused upon to a greater degree than the male-male. It's the way of libido liberals, and don't you forget it. Updated On: 8/27/05 at 10:25 PM
I'm floored that this thread has been able to continue. I mean, seriously. How has this happened? I'm starting to think art is resurrecting this thread because he HATES PENGUINS.
My penguin army is exhausted. We understand your oh-so-pertinent concern, but your arguments about the "evidence of homophobia" and the seeming takeover of "libido liberals" in the Rent trailer is hardly convincing.
You can fight the crazy fight with the big guys upstairs. The rest of us are going to take a swim.

P.S. I would also like to mention how funny I think it is that art2 as far as I can tell has only posted in 4 threads, all pertaining to Rent and two created by him to talk about this "issue." -do you have any other theatre interests?

The real question is: How wil Chris Columbus show Maureen mooning Benny and his father-in-law during LA VIE BOHEME? Will we get a long, lingering close-up of Idina's perfectly shaped ass?
Rule number 1 is that straight libido liberals don't really like gay men. They might profess support for gay rights but when it comes to the love crunch, they recoil. You see it all the time on TV, the silver screen, the stage...all these entities that you'd think were a little more enlightened. If you don't believe me, try an experiment. I want two guys to go to a straight bar somewhere in New York City and kiss in it. If you don't see a mass exodus you'll at least see the stares and shocked faces of the libido liberals.
In a nutshell, straight liberals have a real problem dealing with male-male affection in gay relationships, and I think this is going to be the case with Chris Columbus and the RENT movie.
Art - I have politely avoided getting involved in your discussions on this but I just have a question...
WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU WANT US TO SAY? I MEAN YOU KEEP REPEATING THE SAME POINT, DO YOU THINK WE DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CONVEY?
Or... will you not stop until everyone agrees with you? Because if that is the case, you will lead a very frustrated miserable life. NOT EVERYONE HAS TO AGREE WITH YOU. Let it go. You've made your point.
Rune Number 5: All [you can fill in any group you want] . . .
You get the idea. Nice to see you treat everyone with such individuality and respect. Perhaps you do not see in others what does not exist in yourself.
Off to find another wall to pound my head against.
i just want to know where the hell he came up with the term "libido liberal". not only is it laughable but you really have to question the mental state of anyone who would even come up with such a term... libido liberal...are these people that are liberally led on by their libidos or are they libidos who have liberal beliefs and customs? or is this art2 just a brick short of a load...
I Googled the term, and actually did come up with some definition. It's a term for people who act "liberal" but really only favour things that turn them on.
