I liked this quite a bit. It's the best Jackman has been onstage since THE BOY FROM OZ, maybe? I know everyone fawns over his song-and-dance routine, but he's truly wonderful in straight plays too. I thought Ella Beatty was very good - I wasn't crazy about her in APPROPRIATE (and even less so in GHOSTS), but she fared much better here.
Another terrible audience, though. The second the lights went down, someone's phone started ringing on what sounded like the highest volume possible. People were talking throughout at full volume ("HUGH GOT A GREAT HAIR DYE JOB!!!" ), fidgeting with their coats, bags, and zippers, etc.
Someone in the second or third row all the way house right decided to get up and leave in the middle of a scene, forcing the entire row to stand up. And then, instead of quietly leaving via the nearest exit, they opted to walk through the middle aisle of the venue, passing directly in front of the rest of the orchestra seating, as if they didn't cause enough of a disturbance to begin with.
Someone else had a coughing attack in the front row during a key turning point in the play (which I realize they couldn't really help, but it went on for forever). It eventually prompted Hugh to ask them if they needed water (it worked in the context of the play, as most of his monologues are delivered directly to the audience, as if giving a lecture - but come ON, people ).
It's just so continually disappointing how awful, selfish, and inconsiderate theater audiences are anymore. The show is 85 damn minutes long. Sit down, be still, be respectful, and shut up. It's not that hard.
I must've been sitting right by you in the back-right of the orchestra because I heard the hair dye comment too! There was also an audience member in the area who took multiple photos about an hour into the play, really taking her time to do so without any hint of shame or discretion.
The audience was horrendous when I went as well.

Insane. Thankfully I missed the picture-taking.
I fear I would’ve lost it.
I was at the same performance last night. The woman whose phone went off was sitting directly in front of me. I felt bad for the coughing man though. I have had that happen to me during shows and that tickle spasm that won’t go away is terrible. Water/cough drops don’t help. There’s not really anything you can do about that.
We were a lucky audience tonight as there was very minimal coughing and no comments from the audience. As for the play, I went into it blind and reeeeeeally liked it. It’s a bit of a slow burn for the first 30 minutes where it’s basically just a long monologue from Jackman but once it gets going, that’s some damn fine writing, I thought.
It’s a story I think we’ve seen a lot over the years (teacher has affair with student) but this was written so differently as not to truly “blame” anyone for what happened and just lets the characters play out the beginnings to the end of it as adults coming to terms in their own way with what they’ve done and what it means and I just found that to be a very different approach to telling that story.
As for Ella Beatty, I personally found her to be just fantastic in this. Her acting I felt was spot on as a young, inexperienced girl getting involved in this thing they’re doing and her growth of the character was just great. Both of them, really. Not sure if I’ll get a chance to see this one again but it’d be great to watch it again, knowing how it ends.

I have not stopped thinking about this since I saw it. Insane to me how there’s still so much availability for it.
Now appears to be totally sold out.

I'm torn between this or Gatsby for a thursday matinee as I don't think there is nothing else on May 22, right?
I'm already seeing Oh, Mary on Sunday.
If you’re able to see this, I highly recommend you do.
