New York casting offices when they see a famous last name.

To cut old Ell some slack, Julliard actors have a tendency to be a little tentative just out of the gate.  I remember seeing the earliest performances of Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver and thinking "Meh."

Good for them for bringing Strindberg back.  At his best, Strindberg was a way better playwright than both Ibsen and Chekhov, IMO.

Sorry, but Ella is truly one of the most energyless actors I've ever seen live (and I've seen her in a few things now). Nepobabyism aside, I really don't know how they keep casting her. I've only ever heard her act in a monotone emotionless voice. So confusing...

Well, maybe not confusing per say, but part of me suspects the median New York theatergoer might not be jumping out of their skin at these titles - do you really want to go watch Sexual Perversions of the Middle Class or see some Creditors?

Regarding Ms Beatty...

I would say that the explanation is found in the word "resonance." She apparently does not resonate for a number of posters here, but she does for other theatregoers (perhaps of a different generation). Much in the same way that Merman might not resonate for those who would get a lot more resonance from hearing Tupac.I would suggest that it is not healthy to let our own tastes dictate.

I'm guessing Hugh Jackman's fan base got used to seeing him in lavish Broadway house productions or high budget movies. Maybe people have reservations about seeing him in a small theater in a play with a questionable title and content. Those production pictures won't help to sell tickets either, the disheveled outfits look like they've been pulled out from a lost and found bin.

I liked this quite a bit. It's the best Jackman has been onstage since THE BOY FROM OZ, maybe? I know everyone fawns over his song-and-dance routine, but he's truly wonderful in straight plays too. I thought Ella Beatty was very good - I wasn't crazy about her in APPROPRIATE (and even less so in GHOSTS), but she fared much better here.

Another terrible audience, though.  The second the lights went down, someone's phone started ringing on what sounded like the highest volume possible.  People were talking throughout at full volume ("HUGH GOT A GREAT HAIR DYE JOB!!!" ), fidgeting with their coats, bags, and zippers, etc.

Someone in the second or third row all the way house right decided to get up and leave in the middle of a scene, forcing the entire row to stand up.  And then, instead of quietly leaving via the nearest exit, they opted to walk through the middle aisle of the venue, passing directly in front of the rest of the orchestra seating, as if they didn't cause enough of a disturbance to begin with.

Someone else had a coughing attack in the front row during a key turning point in the play (which I realize they couldn't really help, but it went on for forever).  It eventually prompted Hugh to ask them if they needed water (it worked in the context of the play, as most of his monologues are delivered directly to the audience, as if giving a lecture - but come ON, people ).

It's just so continually disappointing how awful, selfish, and inconsiderate theater audiences are anymore. The show is 85 damn minutes long.  Sit down, be still, be respectful, and shut up. It's not that hard.
