I've been on a Hairspray kick lately and have had the cast recording playing on a loop - I feel like it's often chalked up as just another fluffy, family musical ala High School Musical or Grease but it truly is one of the greatest scores of the last 50 years. I saw the London production several times throughout it's run and always left the theatre on such an adrenaline high.
With a few people on the board suspecting Broadway will re-open with lots of revivals and a revival due to open for a limited run in London later this year - is it time for Hairspray to come back? I would be absolutely fine with an exact replica of the original - throw in Harvey and Jenifer Lewis, stuff it with Disney stars, I just need it back on Broadway!

Same. I would take a full replica. I never got to see the original broadway run so I would be down for a carbon copy. Throw in Harvey throw in Jennifer Lewis. YES. Give me the Disney stars whatever.
I wonder how Alice ripley or Laura bell bundy would be as miss von Tussel. I wanted back years ago for them to cast Shawn mendes or harry styles in that hairspray live broadcast. I know it would never happen but timothee chalamet as link. I’d love to have Jackie Hoffman back as penny’s mom. also I think Jonathan Groff or brendon urie could be a great corny.
Nicest kids. I’d love to see Ryan Steele in the ensemble

Last recession closed it prematurely, seems fitting that we get a remount once everyone can come back to the theaters. It's the absolute best musical comedy of last 20 years.
I'd love to see Harvey but really don't think he has another musical run in him.

EVERYTHING!!! There is literally no other show that I would rather see come back then HAIRSPRAY. There are so many great possible casting choices. I wouldn't even know where to begin dream casting. Lol
It's such a feel-good musical and the finale song YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT seems fitting for Broadway's return after this devastating pandemic

The casting ideas on this thread make me realize how young everyone is here.
The OBC was near-perfection. Why try to recreate it? Won't work.
New cast. New ideas. Perhaps some reorchestration.
Keep the choreography. It was brilliant.

I haven’t seen pictures/videos from any non-replica production that matched the brilliance of the original set and costume designs. Even the film version’s designs paled in comparison for me. Same for Hairspray Live, though a lot of those designs borrowed heavily from the Broadway production. HAIRSPRAY was a case of every single person on the cast and creative team firing on all cylinders and working so extremely well together. I’m sure there is some visionary out there who can make a non-replica production worthy of a Broadway revival, but they’ve got some huge shoes to fill. Everything about it was pure magic.
Also, do we think that the upcoming non-equity tour will kinda kill any chance for a Broadway revival in the next few years? That is, if the tour actually ends up happening.

I much rather than cancel the tour and give us a full scale equity Broadway revival or tour. The Network's tour of the show looked cheap and they trimmed The show down

A Hairspray revival would be perfect! I sure hope it's able to happen in the near future!

I was thinking the same thing. I think she may be on the small bit of the older side, but I think she would be great no doubt in the role!

I've been imagining lately what a great pairing Harvey and Patton Oswalt would be as Edna and Wilbur
#14I need a Hairspray revival.
Posted: 4/23/20 at 8:27amI almost guarantee somebody has Eric Stonestreet on speed dial for Edna...

^ I don’t see that happening in this day and age. The gays would riot if a straight man got cast in a role that is most associated with two gay icons, Divine and Harvey.

A large scale production akin to the original would be so expensive to put on. In the past 13 years, there have been a movie AND a well-done TV show. I just don't see enough people being willing to pay Broadway prices this soon.

Would they riot? I know America and the U.K. have very different views on (and even definitions of) queer culture, but Michael Ball has been the default Edna for about twenty years.
My favorite, though, will always be the late great John Pinette.

Jarethan has a good point. It's recent over-saturation might 1) lead to bottom box office sales and 2) might disqualify it from revival status among theatre-goers.

This made me tear up for all the right reasons. I thought this musical was just so trivial when it came out and I never gave it the time of day. I regret that and, agreeing with the OP....I NEED A HAIRSPRAY REVIVAL!

Posted: 6/6/20 at 11:15pmIs it just me or in the last week I can guarantee producers are scrambling to bring hairspray back for. A revival. Whether or not it’s a carbon copy of the original. I feel this has secured a revival soon

Personally? The revival we need right now isn't Hairspray...but Ragtime. Same subject, way more 'Hello??!! This crap is still happening!". I enjoy Hairspray for what it is, but it leans way to more into the audience psyche as something that happened 50 years ago, but everything is ok now...I mean Ragtime has this issue too to a degree, but it's just way more in your face about racial justice and the events surrounding it. The 09 revival didn't hit very well then but it would now.
