Oh, i agree. I wasn't saying get rid of the absurdness, but just flesh it out a bit. I listened to the sampler again today and the ballads are some what repetitive, I think if he fixed them up a bit and added in some tempo changes or something, they could be really good songs. Hopefully he's not stuborn to the point of arrogance. I hate when ppl think anything they do is suddenly amazing.
what i want to know is....is this show worth the effort and money of going to see it? all together it would cost me $21 for the train and $26.25 for the ticket. is it worth it? is it so bad that i should experience? or should i save my money? these are important questions people!
it is a must see. it is the only truly original thing on Broadway. the only show which takes risks. Where else are you gonna see a dance with a plastic skeleton? While I didn't love it, I'm really glad I was able to see it. Updated On: 10/2/05 at 09:24 PM
Trace, saw it on Friday and then on Saturday with a friend All with free tickets. Sold my TDF ones. Not coming back again. (Well If I get more free tix.. )
my father sent me the link to this. I think it is absolutely hilarious! i can't stand joe brooks. So i'm glad he's being bashed. I REALLY hope it's enough of a spectacle so that it stays on and i can see it when i come up to visit for christmas! Updated On: 10/4/05 at 10:02 PM
Just having watched this show, Brooks does very much seem like a looney toon. He did lyrics, music, book, directing, and it seems some producing. Hit musicals are *very* rarely one-man wonders; Mel Brooks knew enough to at least find Thomas Meehan, and even Eric Idle understood that he needed the creative advice of Mike Nichols. Plus, he staunchly refused to open out of town, saying the readings left people crying. I'm curious what a better director would have been able to do with this. It's a musical of so many new ideas and concepts for a musical, all very poorly executed. http://www.broadwayabridged.com/scripts/inmylife.shtml
I saw it Friday night too. I enjoyed reading all the reviews and the few divergent opinions there were. I was entertained, parts were good, I was able to follow the show completely (I'm sure this is because I have ADHD.) I was under the impression that the Jenny character has OCD, but I didn't see any performance of those qualities. If anything, she's ADHD. I'd leave everything as is but cut the Nick/Samantha stuff. Or not. And those jingles I read somewhere are jingles (Dr Pepper, VW) which were written by Joe Brooks but not accepted for the particular products' commercials. Anyway, I wouldn't go so far as to say i LIKED it, but it was entertaining enough. And the voices were great. But BKLYN was decidedly better, MichaelBennet, even with it's flaws all intact. I like Margo Channing's take on this show. I'm really interested to see 1) what changes are made and 2) what the critics do. Are they already circling like sharks, smelling the blood? I hope they at least compliment the actors' work....
VB: Mr. Wonka, my name is Violet Beauregard...
WW: I don't care.
Saw it last night...I admit I felt a quite a build up and was afraid of the potential "let down" because the talk and hype simply could not do the material justice....how wrong was I?
I won't rehash what was said, only to add that this is a must see.
Last night an usher came to the people in front of us and asked them to stop laughing -- I felt kinda bad because I was the one who could not control myself....
Winston asking the audience if they believe in fairies....priceless and perfect and only manner in which to get a BIG applause at the end of the show!
Thank you Mr Brooks...thank you for an evening I will NEVER forget.

So strange I'm going back to catch this monstrosity again! Cannot wait! Ken Mandelbaum will be re-releasing his book to be retitled, "Not since In My Life..."
If you were laughing all the way through the show and disrupting it for the audience, why shouldn't the Usher come over and tell the show queens to can it? I sure would have. Don't get me wrong, IN MY LIFE is a laugh riot, but it's not a freakin film in your living room. It's still theatre. Show a little respect!
