Hello to all...
I am new to this board and a veteran broadway afficionado.
Having seen almost every new musical, revival, etc. since the early 70's I thought I was being real smart in the beginning when WICKED was in previews and I received discount vouchers for tickets. I blew this show off then as frivolous nonsense, and was thriled when the critics were less the enthusiastic about the show.
"Saved myself some money on that one" I said to myself.
Well, how could someone so into the theater be SO wrong about a show?
After it became a major hit, and everyone I knew kept saying , Idina Menzel, I had to get tickets.
It was a chore because by then the show was a sell out and she was said to be leaving January 9th.
I was able to get tickets for today's performance, the fateful matinee and have been waiting anxiously for months to see this show.
(I saw Idina when she was in RENT, but did not remember her much then).
Needless to say, I was blown away by her performance and this production. This is an EXCELLENT, very entertaining show, and IDINA leads a stand out, superb cast of broadway professionals.
So, I was heartbroken when she was hurt in the final number before the finale. We all knew it was her. There were many kids in the audience, and many were here to see her for the 3rd and 4th time. Some of them had tears in there eyes.
The announcer made the classic "is there a doctor in the house" request, and I will never forget the sight of 6 to 8 people, presumably doctors bolting from their seats and heading for the rear of the house to aid Idina.
They DID NOT clear the theater, we all just sat and waited for the show to resume, and there was NOTHING wrong with her voice at all.
The show resumed for those final minutes, and Jenneifer Thompson still appeared to be shaken over the entire affair. Shoshanna Beane was an absolute trooper and finished the show in style. You could sense she felt out of place at the curtain calls, and actually stepped into the background after coming out, as if to say, "I cannot accept these applause".
The audience gave a rousing, immediate standing ovation to the cast, but I, along with many near me felt cheated at not being able to give Idina her due accolades.
So, if you are going to tomorrow's final show for Idina, and she returns for the performance, please give her an extra round of applause for those of us priveledged to be in her presence at the matinee, 1/8/05.
Idina Menzel, Godspeed and all the best for a speedy recovery.

"ok luvwicked just called me idina did go on for the seccond act she broke her rib from a trapped door malfunction they had a 30 minute pause shoshana went on for the last 15 minutes, idina came out for the curtain call then they took her to the hospital.......please dont start rumors casue its not very nice and this is the truth cause she saw it , everything else you heard was wrong idina did do the second act and until the last couple scenes they had a 30 minute pasue and shoshana went on" --wicked4life51
Um, okay, NO. This is not what happened at all. You say "don't start rumors" and go and create one yourself. First off, Idina would NOT go on at curtain call, and she didn't. Second, SHE DID NOT BREAK HER RIBS. SHE DID NOT BREAK HER COLLAR BONE. SHE DID NOT BREAK HER LEG. I've heard all of those things and none of them are true. She is simply bruised pretty badly, but is planning on going on tomorrow, if the doctors allow her to. You are obviously confused about the topic and have no right to post wrong information.
Also, about the Act II dress issue. It wouldn't matter if Idina wore the Act II dress to the hospital because she wears a different dress when she comes out of the trap door anyway.
It amazes how misinformed some of you people are.
I cannot express my sadness for her. Although I have tickets for the show tomorrow, that is NOT in anyway my main concern. I still would love to see Shosh. I am literally praying that Idina will be better as soon as possible. Lets hope its a bruised rib rather than a broken one. This is truly, truly awful.
I think it's already been established what's true and what's rumor. So stop accusing people of lying or whatever, just forget about it, it's not important. Someone gets seriously injured and goes to the hospital, that is important. Some people may apparently have seen Idina come back at the end (maybe they're just seeing things lol) but either way, she's still hurt.
Update:
An announcement will be made in the morning about whether she will go on or not. They want to see how she feels tomorrow.

bwaydan, thank you for your post. i really appreciate it because it seems like that is what actually happened. i feel so badly for the cast, crew, audience and especially idina and wish her a speedy recovery. i also think it was great that shoshana was such a trooper and it seemed like she was great about it. it's a hearbreaking story and i pray that idina will get well very soon.

I hope Idina is okay. I'm just SO sad for her. I hope she'll recover quickly. If her health will be jeopardized it's better that she does not go on tomorrow. Yes people will be disappointed but her health is the priority.
I feel for Shoshana, too! How stressful to go on under those conditions. And if she goes on tomorrow it will be tough. Both women are such troopers. Good luck to them both.

If Shoshana ends up going tomorrow - I think it would be an awesome opportunity to welcome her to the cast of Wicked...so please anyone who has tickets/plans on going tomorrow - if Idina doesn't go on - please make this a chance to welcome Shoshana to the family permanently - since that will be the beginning of her as the new Elphaba! Let's start her run with big welcoming and open arms from all of the die hard Wicked fans...It's hard enough trying to replace Idina in the first place! My heart would be so happy if there were cheers and applause on her entrance tomorrow (or Tuesday for that matter)...
it was just on CBS news..didnt say much from what everything that was said on here.
only difference they said a spokesman said "she stepped forward and missed the trapped door causing her to fall"
i don't really understand that..but that could be because i don't know how the door is set up or what you have to do to get it going.
"You are obviously confused about the topic and have no right to post wrong information."
Wow. Let me saw, on behalf of the board, I apologize for offending you with postings. Seeing as this seems to be your very first post on the board, I'm thinking this may not be the message board for you. This is a message board, not The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal. People give opinions and relay that information in the hope of that information being of some use. Are things always totally true? No, I've never heard anyone on this board claim they know everything and everything posted is 100% true.
"It amazes how misinformed some of you people are."
Personally I don't favor being preached to, it's always been my opinion that those who act superior, insist what they say is true and dismiss all other opinions and speak down to people (i.e "some of you people") can be a sign of insecurity.
Grow up.
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
I read the article on Broadway.com and just started cracking up!!!! All those Wicked freaks with tickets for tomorrow are gonne be sooooo pissed!! HAHAHA!!
My two cents:
All I know that if I had Wicked tickets tomorrow, and Idina Menzel did not go on, I would give the cast a standing ovation for pulling through and doing what they had to do. In some ways that standing ovation would also be for Idina Menzel, though she did not appear, for the horrible way she was forced to end a fantastic run and for pulling through the best she could. If you have tickets- go, and give the cast credit for doing what they could/had to.
That is SICK if the fact that tons of fans are upset and dissapointed "cracked" you up...
No, what really cracks me up are the people who paid like $1,000 a ticket on ebay for tomorrow and have no just reason for getting a refund. Now THAT cracks me up even more!! HAHAHAHAH!!
The only thing we can all do right now is to just hope and pray that what's meant to happen will happen.
Hopefully Idina will be alright, but regardless, tomorrow the show must and will go on.
only some crazy sadist would think that....

This is a thread for those "All those Wicked freaks" so wtf do you think you are doing posting some incredibly thoughtless, rude, and innappropriate comment like that? As has been said MANY TIMES on this thread(as you would know if you read it before posting) people should be focusing on the fact that Idina has gotten seriously hurt (as she WAS taken to the hospital) and be wishing her all the best in her recovery. Not laughing at the misfortune of people who bought tickets, most of whom, if they are real Idina or Wicked fans, will be more worried for her health than the fact that they aren't going to see her perform.
You are a complete hairbrained idiot, in summary.
Agreed. Talk about scheudenfreude :).

I was sitting next to a group of young girls that were there for one girl's birthday and there were all about 10. They were all really shaken up and the mother was sitting next to me and was trying to keep them all calm and in their seats. That's why I was so glad that Joey explained what was going on at the end, because I'm sure it reassured many people.
The "Is there a doctor in the house?" line always seemed so cheesy to me before, but after seeing that, it doesn't seem as cliché and it was touching and probably was really helpful.
I also felt privileged to be at the performance; it was my first time seeing it too and I totally loved it, even with the break. I got to see both Idina and Shoshana in the same show, and both were wonderful. During the standing ovation, I was applauding for the entire cast for finishing the show, even though I know many people would have understood if they chose to end the show early. But I do wish Idina could have heard the applause, because it was definitely for her.
Here's wishing Idina all the best. I hope those of you who claim to be her true fans will say a prayer for her speedy recovery. Her well being is more important than her performance tomorrow.
One more thing I'd like to add, as someone who works in television news and deals with "breaking news" stories on a regular basis, it's important not to report hearsay -- whether it be on this message board, CBS News, or the New York Times. This thread is a classic example of what happens -- total confusion. It's human nature to want to be the "first" to break the news, but reporting information from a friend of a friend, or allegedly quoting someone from a box office, will only leave you with egg on your face. (Who on here will ever trust a word posted in the future by the person who said, "I'm right!" and was completely wrong?) A quote hung in my newsroom reads:
"It's more important to be right, than to be first."
OK, I had to say that, but enough... all the best, Idina!
Sorry, State. Didnt mean to freak out
I agree with loudirishgirl.
How could someone literally laugh at the fact that another person fell *according to broadway.com* over two feet and possibly broke a rib. The "Wicked freaks" of which I am proudly a part, are not upset about her performing. They just want her to get better and are concerned for her.
"Agreed. Talk about scheudenfreude :). " that was wonderful. i was just listening to that song too.
