I don't think it stands a chance at a Musical nomination.
Gentleman's Guide
Rocky
Bridges
Aladdin
Beautiful
Bullets
... all these seem ahead of it ....
WICKED got reviews similar (if not worse) than these and still received one.
Wicked was 10 years ago, love. If anything, it was the exception. This is not a season with a couple of new musicals.
If anything, these reviews are more like The Boy from Oz.

Here are two reviews from reviewers who reviewed the show in DC and who came to NYC to see how the show had changed and remained the same.
Peter Marks of the Washington Post:

"The bottom line: “If/Then” is an enjoyable, beautifully sung, at times deeply touching experience, built on a structure that never completely works." Peter Marks
and John Stoltenberg of DCMetroTheaterArts.

"I was not wrong to risk opening my heart to this show. It has faithfully kept its promise and then some. If/Then is an uplifting gift that keeps on giving. Might you fall in love with it too? This much I can promise you: The chances are very, very good." John Stoltenberg

Maybe Rocky sneaks in now.
No mention of Idina as old Ben is a 1 woman man and her name is Kelli
I'm thinking If/Then can be viewed as this years The Act, a vehicle for Idina that will run as long as Idina is in it.
"bdn223- If all of the reviewers and more than half of the message board comments are all saying the same thing, perhaps it's safe to assume there are inherent problems with the material."
So, if bdn223 has an differing opinion on the piece, he must be in the wrong? As opposed to merely having what you claim to be a minority opinion (since the majority of people who see If/Then are not reviewers or BWW members)? I'm in bdn223's camp, as well.

I am completely shocked by these reviews. They were not what I was expecting. I mean, Aladdin a movie musical gets positive reviews, but a new, inventive, interesting musicals gets mixed reviews. I'm just confused.
Brantley talks at length about her. Just not her performance in this show, which he's ostensibly reviewing. It seems more like he felt like doing a free-association writing exercise rather than actually review anything.

New and inventive doesn't equal quality and an adaptation of an animated film doesn't equal lack of it.

I personally don't think it should really matter where it came from, what should really matter is the finished product!

Did you actually read the reviews? Not a single one says "I hated this new, inventive, interesting new musical."
"Maybe Rocky sneaks in now."
Oh, Jesus, you're like Rumpelstilskin, every thread you touch ends up spinning a golden tale about Rocky.

A positive review does not mean something is artistically better than something else. It's simply a measure of if it works or not. In Aladdin's case, it does.
Best Musical will surely be interesting this year. It's too bad that Hedwig won't count.
What the hell was with Brantley's review? He hardly even said anything about Idina, except for the fact that her fans will will flock to see this. What a crappy review. That review was absolutely abysmal and got off track way too many times. There was absolutely no substance and he hardly gave his opinion on anything besides the 2 stories theme. Gross ass heffer.
I was more excited about seeing Kyle Dean Massey in the bathroom line than I was about the first act. The second act worked better, for me.
Jdrye222...I agree, and I liked that Josh and Beth eventually met. It was a pleasant surprise. I have no problem with the 2 stories, and I was never confused. The songs in the first act were just not memorable. This is another show, like ROCKY, that redeems itself in the second act.
"Way to pounce guys. Gold stars for all of us!"
What does this refer to?!

Haterobics- Not saying that bdn is wrong for liking the show (Hell, I'm the guy that actually enjoyed Leap of Faith). I just find it a strong statement to say everyone who didn't like the show is "missing the point". If that many people are "not getting it", one could assume that the writers haven't made the point clear in the first place???

I did read the review. All I was trying to say is that it is very interesting how a musical that was thought to get mostly negative reviews got positive reviews and how one that was assumed to get most positive reviews is not exactly getting the reviews that was assumed.

They obviously don't care what everyone else got or not. That is how true fanaticism works.

As for ROCKY, I just don't see it. The Tonys have never been kind to shows that emphasize spectacle first, and the ONLY redeeming thing about Rocky was the last 20 minutes of spectacle.
Don't get me wrong, it was exciting as anything i've seen onstage, but the two hours leading up to it were a snooze.
Fortunately, the nominations will be figured out in the topic where people are trying to figure it out. Or on April 29, whichever comes first.

You mean, one of these shows always gets a nomination?
