Posted: 11/19/20 at 10:06amWonder Woman has been delayed 4 times over the course of 13 months with an advertising campaign spanning over 17 months. On top of that. HBO Max is severely floundering in terms of subscriber growth and AT&T is scared at how well Disney+ is performing. They need a mega blockbuster on the service to drive subscribers. Unfortunately, In The Heights won’t drive 10+ million new subs like they’re hoping WW1984 will. ITH also hadn’t finished its ad campaign (not even a second trailer, right?) and since movies probably won’t open until June, it’s primed to be a success in theaters.

It will probably be a summer 2021 theatrical release, at Lin's and director Jon M. Chu's behest.

When push comes to shove, the director and producers don’t have much say in how the film is distributed

I honestly wouldn’t be so quick to say no to this.
The fact that Wonder Woman, a sequel to a film that made nearly one billion dollars world wide is going straight to streaming is huge. If there was a possible resurgence of the movie theater experience, they would have held onto it until next summer, no questions asked. First with Mulan and now with Wonder Woman, we are in unprecedented times as far as film goes. Covid has for better or for worst changed how the majority sees films.
I don’t expect theaters to completely go away, but I do see studios making the majority of films VOD/in theaters simultaneously or at the very least, making a much shorter window to VOD, which Regal will not stand for. Universal and AMC already have a deal where their films can go VOD after 17 days.
I think I’m the next few months, ESPECIALLY with another shutdown likely, we are going to see a major shake up with the movie industry.

Another shutdown could obviously change everything. But as of now there is no plan to release In the Heights on HBO Max.
Wonder Woman is a slightly different beast. It has wider appeal than a musical, and as someone already mentioned can help drive subscribers to the service. It also has already come close to exhausting its marketing budget thanks to multiple delays, and they want it released without launching a whole new campaign down the road. In the Heights did not yet have the marketing campaign in full force. They are also looking at it as a potential awards contender, and the team that was behind its awards campaign is no longer working on it for this year. So at the very least we know they wouldnt release it the HBO Max route before March, as they want it eligible for next years Oscars.

I think by next Summer, movie theaters will be open for the most part. They have stated this is for the big screen, and they really want fans to watch it that way. Just like West Side Story.

It would be really fun to have the options of in-theater AND outdoors, depending on where the world/country is by then. I can see it being a fun picnic experience.

Though you are about 95% right, we really don't know what their contract rights are. Maybe they do and maybe they don't.

Exactly. This is going to streaming. They'll likely call that a month or so before July

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure some movie theaters have already started reopening. That isn't to say they will be closed again by the summer but there is still a possibility, right?

>no way in hell are theaters gonna be open by next summer
That is just patently false. We're looking at vaccine roll out happening in about 8 weeks. It's silly to say movie theatres won't be open by Summer when 70% of them already are. They won't be full capacity I'm sure, but they will be open. This isn't live theatre people with audiences in the thousands, get a grip and look at reality.
>That isn't to say they will be closed again by the summer but there is still a possibility, right?
The odds of us being in worse place than we are now when we'll be pretty deep in vaccine territory is silly. The odds of movie theatres being open more than they are now by then far outweighs the odds of the opposite.

What I think Gypsy101 meant to say is that big studios are not likely to be willing to release big budget movies or movies they think will be big box office hits in theatres in the summer, when all is said and done. Although business will be better than Tenet, that are not going to want to take a chance. I would expect that, as summer rolls in, the movies that are released are the same type as have been released thus far...films that were never going to be big money makers...either because they turned out to be mediocre or they never had mass appeal, etc.

Yes they are. You actually have to give people movies they're willing to go back to the theater for. We're not going to be going from zero to a hundred in a weekend. You need to ramp it up and the best way to do that is not put movies in theatres that are nothing but trash. In The Heights moves nothing if it were released on HBO Max. Not a soul who isn't just going to get a free trial and then peace out. You'll be 6 months into vaccine territory by then.

you’re putting a LOT of faith into this vaccine especially on its timeline of mass distribution
yes, Jarethan is right about what i meant. sure the physical buildings may be open but i don’t see blockbusters in them.

Posted: 11/21/20 at 10:43amI promise some of y’all that this WILL put a large damper on the movie theater industry. It’s already been dying and windows have been getting smaller and smaller. People wanted streaming and now they’re getting it and I genuinely do not believe we are going to be going back to movie theaters in a big way.

Wonder Woman being released on HBO Max is a massive indication as to how studios will seek distribution going forward. This is the first time a studio has essentially succumbed to streaming, forfeiting potential box office revenue for consumer needs. It seems to be a milestone in how movies will be distributed going forward, and I anticipate all major studios following suit in some fashion. So yes, I think it's very likely that In The Heights will be released for streaming, likely simultaneous with a theatrical release.
As the head of Warner Bros said in the announcement, "We're not in Kansas anymore..."
