If you order carefully (soup and salad), Junior's can be very reasonable and GOOD.
Another vote for Turco.
I also really like the sausage pizza at Little Italy on 45th (5/6th).
Grab a gyro at Turco, burger at Shake Shack or the hood diner Westway
The Theatre Row Diner was my go to in 2016. But it’s gone now…
Chipotle, 43/9 and get those cheap $6 margaritas.

Slightly off the main topic but does anyone know if City Kitchen in the Row Hotel has plans to reopen? That was often a go-to place for us before shows or between a matinee and evening show. i realize with Covid it’s a difficult setting but just wondering if it’s really gone for good. It was a nice option for variety in the theater district.
Isn't the City Kitchen space a Duane Reade now? Or is that only on the lower level?
Mee Soup on 9th Avenue and 53rd Street I highly recommend. Friends go there twice a week for different items that are reasonable and good value. I like the soup with noodles, roast pork, shrimp and chicken. Try it you will not be disappointed. There are plenty of restaurants all along 9th. Rent is cheaper so the food is too.
Wow I always forget how expensive NY is! In Vancouver the going price at takeout pizza places is usually 2 slices with a can of pop for $5 Canadian.... so about $4US

Lots of options, always fresh and good, and two slices with toppings and a beverage will fill me up for under $15. "

I discovered Los Tacos #1 on my recent trip to NY. I went there for lunch twice in my 5 night stay and both times the line was out the door. The tacos are amazing and the atmosphere is very bustling and exciting. The place is definitely on my must-go list for the future.

You can get that for $4 in NYC. Or you can get good pizza

The grand central food court is pretty bleak these days a lot of places closed during the shutdown - but the Vanderbilt food hall on 45th and Vanderbilt is still pretty good.

Both Junior's locations offer takeout and you can easily find outdoor seating near both. You can easily get a bagel sandwich or something like that.

Tacos #1 are insanely good. Rather eat there than any restaurant.
Dallas BBQ will give you two chicken vegetable soups, and two half chicken meals served with side order and cornbread for $16.99 if you order by 5PM. Also, giant 20 ounce frozen drinks that will put you in the Betty Ford Center for $12.99 each. If you don’t mind eating in a giant barn full of tourists, the prices at this place cannot be beat.

Great thread. Los Tacos is my #1 pick (if I have the patience for the line) and Upside Pizza, on the same block as the Drama Book Shop, is also fantastic. Schnippers and John’s pizza are also great but more expensive.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Delis and at least one supermarket (Gristedes) in the theater district. A take-out sandwich and a drink on the "red stairs" can be enjoyable and inexpensive.

If you do go to the Delhi's, be sure to try the Chicken Tikka Masala on Rye.

Whenever I see a show on Broadway I try and go to Chai Thai Kitchen, which is a five min walk from the August Wilson Theater—a 15-20 min walk from some of the other ones. I love their Pad Thai and usually split it with whoever I’m going with if it’s the dinner portion. Usually I order the Pad Thai and an appetizer to split and after tip spend no more than I wanna say $25 for both of us. Seating is a bit annoying tho so go early. For whatever reason ever since the pandemic started they only have their 1st floor dining room open—which only has 9 two-seater tables. Lots of groups try to come and it just doesn’t work well. If just the two of you then it’s perfect if you go before 6:30pm, which is when the dinner crowd starts to come.

There should be more pizza on this list! Although I was saddened to find my favorite midtown pizza place, Two Boots, had closed on 8th and 44. There is a new pizza place in the same spot that I have yet to try. Carve on 8th Ave is great and I personally think any of the walk-up-and-order slice places on 8th Av are great and they're a quintessential New York experience.

My favorite dollar pizza is the one on 9th between 50th and 51st street. Another +1 for Los Tacos #1, Totto Ramen, and Empanada Mama. While I haven't been, I've heard Thong Lor has a pretty decent lunch special for $10 as does Zoralie. Gossip has a happy hour from noon to 10pm on weekdays (and maybe weekends too?), and while they do serve food there I don't remember if any food is discounted for happy hour. Rudy's is another bar that has fairly cheap (for NYC) beers but you can also get a free hot dog with every drink (they're pretty basic and nothing you couldn't make yourself but I guess it's the value that counts, also they're cash only).
It could also be worth looking into the Too Good to Go app, as basically different restaurants will give out "leftover bags" for around $4-6 and you can get a good meal out of that. They do have different pickup times though, so it'll depend on your schedule, and the results can be a bit hit or miss, but you're supposed to get enough food to be valued at 3x what you paid. Amish Market in particular lets you take a pound of food from their hot bar, and Sal's Pizza gives you 3-4 slices.
I've eaten at a few already mentioned so wanted to add another that I like. Red Poke Bowl on 9th and 43rd. For takeout it is very easy to eat. And a lot of options.

Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns Ramen.

For $10 you get a meal with a drink. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hereemmXWi4iAW4I walk 1/2 a block between 6/7 avenues on 53rd st or 52nd st where there are several outdoor public tables to sit and eat. There are public benches near 53/6 as well. Great for people watching.
If you don't mind fast food, I think the best deal in that area is the 4 for $4 meal at Wendy's. Another favorite is Popeye's. The chicken sandwich is only $3.99.
I also like El Rancho on 45th street right across from Schmakary's. Really good Mexican food and my meal tends to range $7-$12 there.
Another good one is Empanada Mama (52nd st and 9th ave) where 2-3 empanadas at $2-$3 each is enough to make me full.
"
More pizza ought to be included on this list! However, I was disappointed to learn that Two Boots, my favourite midtown pizzeria, had shut down on 8th and 44. I haven't yet tried the new pizza joint that opened up in the same location. The walk-up and order slice restaurants on 8th Avenue, like Carve, are excellent and offer a very authentic New York experience.
