Jake Gyllenhal is too attractive to play the Baker. That is the whole point. The Baker and his wife are supposed to be fairly plain. My money is on Seth Rogen as the one who's been approached.

Really? That's the point of those characters?

Of course, Jordan. They are so hideous to look at that they can't even look at each other, which is the real reason they are childless.
Oh!! Because he couldn't get it up!
I get it now!!

Anna Kendrick played the role of Cinderella in the reading of this film.
Sarah Jessica Parker for the wife!!!!
I don't know why I never thought of her before!

Well, Jordan, it makes sense if they're going with the "they're childless because he couldn't get it up for her" subtext that we have just found out about.
It's so weird when you discover such interesting new things about your favorite musical that you've known everything about for 25 years.
She's an A- lister, she can sing, she's old enough to like she's screwed if she hasn't had children by now...

I always felt that Chip Zien and Joanna Gleason in the original came across like Woody Allen and Diane Keaton - this contemporary couple that ended up in the woods somehow.
But hey... if you want SJP, why not her real hubby as the baker?
SJP as the Baker's Wife would be one of the few things that would keep me away from a film version of Into The Woods.
"But hey... if you want SJP, why not her real hubby as the baker?"
I just threw up in my mouth a little.
My top choice for the Baker's wife is Sutton, but since we're talking about A-listers I might as well mention SJP.
I think Ed Helms would be pretty great as the Baker.

According to these sources, Meryl was interviewed in the translated page, the film is expected to begin filming in October. I hope we hear some more casting news soon.

"I think Kate Winslet would be a great Baker's Wife."
I would like to see that happen.

Saw Reese Witherspoon the other day and thought to myself that she might make for an interesting baker's wife.
I love the Witherspoon idea. If they want a huge name (that is, bigger than Toni, who would still be my first choice), I can't see how they could do better. She certainly has the smart cookie wit for the role.
Can she sing? That's the most important thing in my book.
Witherspoon sang her songs in WALK THE LINE so there's at least precedent for her having sung in film before.
Reese is a pretty decent singer. She could probably handle the score quite well. She used to be a pretty dependable, quirky, hilarious actress who'd be perfect for a role like this. She started taking dull mainstream roles after Legally Blonde. I still think she has it in her to knock this role out of the park.
I'd always like Sandra Bullock, Kristen Wiig, Lauren Graham, or Melissa McCarthy, though. Those are my top choices.
Witherspoon would be incredible, IMO. I like the Kristen Wiig idea, but I don't think she'll be approached in a million years.
Her own singing in Walk the Line, playing a singer, was very impressive. If she can sing June Carter she can certainly handle the Baker's Wife vocally, but what really excites me about her for the role is the crackerjack irony, warmth (maybe that's not her rep offscreen but onscreen she's got it!) and down to earth common sense she has brought to many of her roles, which would be a perfect fit for this. it's exactly what made Gleason's performance so unforgettable and exactly what has often been lacking in other attempts to bring life to this role.

How about Minnie Driver as the Baker's Wife? She's a little long in the tooth (43) but not too far out of the realm. She has the quirkiness and the genuine heart for it, and she sings well enough for this role.
Driver would be a better fit as the Witch in a stage revival. Unfortunately, for some inexplicable reason, her career has largely stalled, no way they'd hire her to headline a film this huge, especially after PHANTOM was such a huge mess of a movie on just about every level.
If they do get Witherspoon, I hope she steps up her game, there was a time she was great in all her films but after she won the Oscar she hasn't given a single memorable acting turn. The debacle THIS MEANS WAR left me with no desire to see one of her films in a long time, a LEGALLY BLONDE/ELECTION Witherspoon would be fantastic in this, but she hasn't been that good in a very very long time.
I like the Kristen Wiig idea, but I don't think she'll be approached in a million years.
That's not really true. Marshall was considering Wiig for the lead in the THIN MAN re-make that was shelved in favor of fast-tracking INTO THE WOODS, I'm sure she was seen for this role as well. Her or Melissa McCarthy would be my top choices. Though of course I'd never say no to Toni Collette being cast in anything, something tells me she'll once again get passed over in favor of bigger names though, especially now that she's gonna try to go back to TV.
Reese has just been playing it safe to focus more on being a mom. She'd probably jump at the chance to do this as it's nice and family friendly.
