I am also wondering about Laura's chances. But if nothing else, she'd get nominated for second consecutive time. :)
Why do you keep saying "The Annies?" I'm pretty sure only Lilla Crawford would be the one to be nominated since she's the only person playing Annie.
"They have a lot of stage time and handle it professionally. That's about it. The fact that FOUR of them can do the show at the same level proves their performance isn't that outstanding.
To me, I believe that I shouldn't be able to imagine anyone else playing the role as well. In Matilda (AND Billy Elliot) I don't have to even IMAGINE it -- it's there in flesh and blood. "
^THIS!
Patti's role wasn't being split into four equal parts. Even though she had an alternate, she was clearly the star and when she wasn't there I could imagine she was terribly missed.
Maybe people are able to find particularities to these girls performances, but I think the idea behind the role is that audiences get the exact same experience each time they see the show, doesn't matter who's playing the lead.

I really don't think Laura has that good of a chance to win :/. She is giving a classic performance but so did Susan Egan and Sierra Boggess and they didn't win. I think Laura is at a disadvantage because of the type of role she is playing.
Laura will get nominated for sure. She doesn't stand a chance to win though.
Annie had a lackluster revival and that will harm Lilla Crawford's chances.
The Tonys, like all award shows, are all about politics. Don't forget that.
Laura is also at a disadvantage because her show is bad.
I agree that splitting a role four ways completely invalidates the uniqueness of any one "performance", and despite hating Pippin I think Patina should be the frontrunner for this. She's fabulous.

Wouldn't Crawford be more deserving because she doesn't have 3 other Annies to back her up? If anything Lily C should get the tony over the 4 matildas.
Kelly2, you say that Laura's show (Cinderella) "is bad", like that's some sort of fact, rather than your personal opinion, an opinion which judging from just about every metric available is in the distinct minority. But it's a very loud minority to be sure.

Absolutely right. Lilla Crawford would be and should be nominated for Annie. She does the majority of shows a week and I agree should take precedence over 4 girls sharing one role. No matter what I felt about the production as a whole (and the silly NY accent they have directed her to use), she carries the show as well as anyone could...and deserves a nod. Does she deserve to win? I haven't seen all the other performances so I can't say.

It is a fact that I believe it's bad. The reviews weren't exactly glowing and I think her role suffers more than most in the attempt to modernize the production. To me, she's far from the most likely nominee. Lilla Crawford, the Matildas, Patina, and Stephanie J. Block would all deserve the recognition before Laura's name would even enter my head.
Oh here we go again with the DROOD. SJB ain't gettin' nominated.
I don't think that B&C got the best reviews yet Laura still garnered a nod last year. I'm pretty sure she'll get one again this year. And in my opinion, CINDERELLA was amazing.
"Oh here we go again with the DROOD. SJB ain't gettin' nominated."
I don't understand why people think she could get nominated

We'll see. I really don't think it's that ridiculous of a possibility. She's not a shoe-in, but every single year people on this board think they've got the common wisdom on who'll be up for what, and every year, people are shocked when they're wrong. I can't wait to watch it happen yet again. And I think people should find ways to occupy their time beyond giving me flack every time I dare mention Drood.

Absolutely agree w/ you. Lilla is much more deserving than the Matildas in my opinion.
Kelly, not to quibble too much, but Cinderella's reviews (with a few notable exceptions, e.g. The NYT) were pretty good. It had a B grade from Stagegrqade.com, and it probably would have scored a B+ had they taken the Rex Reed rave on the Huffington Post into accout, which they didn't. Kinky Boots graded out at a B+.
But if you really think that Laura is not going to be nomimated, name an amount you'd like to bet on that proposition. I might even give you odds.
It was similarly controversial at last years Olivier Awards where the 4 actresses playing Matilda won over Sarah Lancashire who was giving a perfect, mature performance 8 times a week in Betty Blue Eyes. As someone above suggested, it's the role that's being nominated/winning, not the actresses...

Especially since the voters don't need to go back to see each actress. Of course this isn't the only time the award/nomination was really for the role, rather than the performer. It's just a little more obvious this time.
As for the LuPone/Evita situation, I don't recall getting a clear answer when I asked a few weeks ago if people were miffed that she won a Tony for a role she "only" performed six times a week.

I wouldn't wager on it 'cause I know my track record with being thrilled with the Tony nominees and winners. In fact, my not enjoying her probably is a huge vote in her favor!

No im not miffed Lupone won. She completely deserved that tony without question
I really hope the matildas dont win. Nothing against them or anything but the fact that there are 4 of them really hurts their chances at winning. Im not sure why broadway has this weird fetish for giving kids tony awards but hopefully this year won't be a repeat of the london awards.
Hello. I am relatively new to this, read the boards but rarely post so please don't attack. I am very curious about the 4 Matilda situation. The one Matilda I saw was outstanding but my question is: taking Evita as an adult example, where Elena Roger had an alternate who did (I think) 2 shows a week and I believe the same is true with Annie as a child example... If Elena or Lilla were nominated, their alternates who do 2 shows per week would not also be nominated, theoretically because the alternates are only doing 2 shows per week. If that is correct reasoning, can 4 girls playing Matilda who each only do 2 shows per week be nominated? I must be missing something because 3 boys who shared the role of Billy were. There is an article in UK Telegraph that the Matilda director said all 4 or none would have to be nominated.
Personally, I would vote for Patina.
But I do think the MATILDA girls will win.

The difference with the very talented Lilla Crawford is that Lilla misses shows (the girl missed shows in PREVIEWS!), at least with the Matildas you know in advance you are not going to see the STAR Matilda, or at the very least you will see A star Matilda.
Cruisemama -- it's not the number of performances that has anything to do with it. It's the technicality of rules.
TECHNIALLY whoever plays the part opening night is who is under consideration for nomination...period. Anything beyond that is strictly by the producers petitioning the Tony committee for special consideration.
The Billy Elliot producers asked that the boys be considered as a unit, and the Matilda producers are likely to do the same.
I do not think (and myabe that's more hope than anything) that they win -- but I do see them receiving a nomination.
Thanks dramamama. That is interesting. Most of the reviewers seem to mention having seen Milly and I read Sophia did opening night. I think, if it is truly an award for the actress in a leading role, the voters should see them all. Otherwise as has been pointed out, in reality it becomes an award for the role - which I would think should go the the book writer. But like I said... I'm new to this.
No problem.
The problem with your vision (they should see all the Matildas) is in the ticket. The Tony voters get free tickets to see all the nominated shows -- and there are a lot of them. In your scenario, they would have to give away FOUR times as many tickets (and I think they get a pair -- but I'm not sure about that). And then of course, time is a factor -- how could they find the time to see all the shows. (And rumor has it that they don't actually go to all the performances as it is.
it was ruled unnecessary in the case of Billy Elliot.

When we went to the Palace during previews, we were told that they were swinging Lilla out on days when she was doing the morning shows and PR. We went on a day after she made an appearance on TV and she was in the show. They were also making sure that the understudy would be up to par in case Lilla wasnt performing. Its a huge role. I love Matilda, but, seriously how can we compare the 2 roles vocally? and they 4 Matildas vs. 1 Annie
