I taped the performance so I haven't had the chance to watch it and I cannot comment on the show. I have seen the show 3 times in NY (twice w/ JLY and once with Michael Longoria) and once in San Fran (w/ Jarrod Spector as Frankie) Overall the NY cast is my favorite, especially JLY and Christian. But I really enjoyed the SF cast and I though Erich Bergen and Jarrod were pheonomenal.

I don't think there's ever been this much resistance to a tour cast. Chill, guys!
Personally, I was never excited about Jersey Boys from any of the promotional performances I had seen the OBC give, and I felt the same way about the tour cast tonight. Without the context of the show, I think the songs seem empty and kind of boring.
WickedOne, I'm seeing Jarrod tonight, I'm so excited!
Okay, I am going to chime in and agree with QueenFrancine and JLYLover. I have seen both casts. I have seen the understudy in SF and he has a great falsetto. Christopher Kale Jones does not. If you have listened to the OBC you will hear the likeness to Frankie Valli's voice. The performance last night bore no resemblance to that. I was amazed when I heard JYL's singing. It's very tough to hit those high notes every night. I loved Erich Bergen's performance in SF. He almost overshadowed the lead. Back to lurking.
I'm confused as to how one can evaluate the "personality" or lack thereof of the performers in their roles from a three minute singing clip.
I have seen the SF touring cast and I can say that they are talented, energetic, and clearly distinguishable from each other. I have not seen the NY cast so I can't compare them, and I have yet to see the Leno clip; it may not be the best representation of the cast, but making sweeping generalizations about the touring cast based on three minutes is silly, frankly. Yes, it was meant to drum up interest and yes, anyone can have an opinion on what they saw, but to say that the tour cast is untalented or whathaveyou based on it... and thanks for the scorn towards us poor backwards West Coasters who just don't know any better. That's sweet, really.

.2 seconds of Christian Hoff on ANY performance and you see his character shining through. Truly.
I'm really not trying to be mean, I'm just throwing my opinion out there. (and seeing who catches it ;-]) I have NOT seen the SF cast, however, my friend Janet in CA sent me some "clips" from the show. While watching scenes, I was not all too impressed. So, I have seen other things besides this one appearance. Now, you may reply saying I cannot rely on the sound quality or the tape quality or the whatever quality, but I have seen the OBC live and many "clips" and they're phenomenal even with the lack of "quality" in the tape. So, the only quality that's lacking is the quality of performance given by these 4 men. Again, this is just my opinion! I just felt the need to publicly express myself. I never felt this way about an OBC. It just seems these 4 guys can't ever be replaced.
I've been reading these things for years, but I never joined the club. I saw people posting today and I felt the need to chime in on this conversation!
I've been to Erich Bergen's blog he is the only one i do like...plus I'm sure he wouldn't really care about this thread because it's just people's opinions...so yeah...
Anyway Christian Hoff doesn't even need to speak and you get a sense of who Tommy is. I too saw these clips...and i was just shocked at the casting. I AM NOT SAYING THEY AREN'T TALENTED. I am however saying I think that they were a poor choice for Jersey Boys. I mean you would think maybe there would be people better suited for th roles out there. But I guess the OBC cast is a once in a lifetime find and once again you are right QueenFrancine they are impossible to replace.

I'm so sorry you aren't artistic director of the La Jolla playhouse, because you certainly know better than Des McAnuff!

Well, I'm sure the casting people did an exhaustive search, and I'm sure San Francisco audiences aren't complete backwoods hicks to be taken in by... whatever.
I would suggest that perhaps the first cast people see is the cast that sticks with them, and it can be hard to accept other people in the roles. Especially when compared to people briefly seen on the television.
In the end, you like what you like, and maybe the OBC is this shining star that can never be attained by another cast. It's possible. I haven't seen them, though, and I liked the SF cast just fine.

AND WE HAVE AWFUL, AWFUL FIRST NATIONAL TOURS. DON'T FORGET.

It was hard for me to watch this and not say to myself, JLY does it better or Christian does it better basically since the NY cast is the one that I've seen.
I liked the tour cast, I didn't love them as much as I love the NY cast.
We LOVE the SF cast, in fact we won't rush on Tuesday nights or Wed mats because that's when CKJ's understudy is on and, even though we have heard he is good (maybe better) we feel dedicated to our cast. We have seen the show like 6 times. It's funny because some of these reactions are similar to what we though about the OBC when we saw them perform on TV this past New Years Eve. Maybe you just get attached...
The performance was just out of context, so it felt weird. But still these guys are fantastic live, and this appearance did not do them justice. And go Michael Ingersoll for that solo!
