I'm fascinated by the psychology behind finding something so tasteless you have to share it.

Interesting situation. I think the comments about the portrayal of Jim Conley are a bit misguided given the historical evidence against him. Especially because the show also does address the racism within the community in a critical and nuanced way.

As for the issues with the "difficult imagery," my first reaction was that they seem to be shying away from from an important piece of theatre because of the sensitive content, regardless of what is actually being said about that difficult content. However, I think the key quote in the article is the one that points out “their lack of faith in both the conservatory and the university’s ability to properly ensure the well-being of students participating in the production"

I can actually get behind this line of reasoning. We aren't on that campus, so we don't know what existing tensions may be going on between the students and administration. It's possible that the administration has, in the past, demonstrated a lack of tact and sensitivity when putting on productions with heavy content, and so the students may feel like this show risks perpetuating their problems.

I say this as someone who does not go to their school, but who did recently graduate from a college that was/is dealing with a similarly volatile relationship between the students and the faculty due to tensions around race and other sensitive issues.

A nothing-burger, but also not very original –– that joke has been said before.

Find something bigger to get worked up about.

It was indeed tasteless. Why would you have the need to share that for all the world to see? That's one that you save for your close circle of friends who may have the same twisted sense of humor you do. It's all about context. Publishing that to the world at large...what is his rationale? Yeah, in all fairness, if Jamie is supposed to be a self-portrait of himself, he makes himself out to be a real a**hole. Kathy is definitely the more sympathetic one.

Now I wonder what his tweet said...

"Talking pictures are a fad, see? I've produced fifty musical comedies, and I'll produce fifty more! Nyah!" Like it or not, social media is here to stay, and part of being an artist and public figure will remain cultivating an appropriate relationship with the public.

If we repeat it, then we're worse than JRB, because we're giving this joke a larger platform despite knowing it's tasteless.
