Jackie Burns - IF/THEN

Posted: 9/12/14 at 7:42pmI can definitely concur with Aimee - when I interviewed Idina for BWW in 2011, she was already working on IF/THEN.

These next few months will tell a lot. I'm sure it will pick up again during the holiday season. Not as much as the summer, but not as low as the fall. I think we will have a better answer come this spring. My college is very close to the city, so every semester we take a vote to offer discounted transportation and a ticket to a show based on the demand of the students. This year we picked Book of Mormon as the most expensive, Aladdin as mid range, and If/Then as the cheapest.... all my broke college friends agreed they would rather splurge on Aladdin than pay for If/Then.
Unless you are a fan of those in the show or truly enjoy its quirky storyline, If/Then is basically irrelevant to the masses.

Idina is contracted through March, if it lasts that long.
I'd venture to guess a January closing but I'd love to see it play through her contracted dates.

#84Jackie Burns - IF/THEN
Posted: 9/14/14 at 11:59amI know Stephanie Klemons went on for Jenn once recently.
#85Jackie Burns - IF/THEN
Posted: 9/14/14 at 12:03pmYes, as I said earlier in this thread, I saw Klemons in the role. The character doesn't get much to do, but she did a fine job. She has a nice look, completely different from Jenn. Although her vocals were extremely similar to how Jenn sings the role.

Has Pearl Sun been on for LaChanze yet?

Posted: 9/14/14 at 4:36pmPearl Sun has gone on for LaChanze a few times. I don't think Tamika has gone on yet for LaChanze, though.

#89Jackie Burns - IF/THEN
Posted: 9/14/14 at 5:28pmI doubt Tamika Lawrence will ever go on as Kate. Pearl Sun seems to be the dedicated cover. Since Tamika already has her own role in the show, it probably makes more sense to have Pearl go on.

Posted: 9/14/14 at 6:03pmI would love to see Pearl Sun as Kate. I think that she would have a very interesting and different take on the role.
#91Jackie Burns - IF/THEN
Posted: 9/14/14 at 6:37pmI saw Pearl Sun on for Kate about two months ago and... I didn't love it. It just made me realize exactly how much the role was written for LaChanze. I would prefer to see Tamika's take on it than see Pearl do it again.

Pretty sure that Stephanie covered Anne the whole week Jenn was out, according to twitter.
I saw Pearl as Kate and wasn't a fan. She sings it fine but she just doesn't get the laughs.

So Jackie will be on 9/30 (7pm), 10/1 (2pm), 10/2 (8pm).
There are more dates now with "Idina Menzel not appearing at this performance":
11/11 (7pm), 11/12 (2pm), 11/13 (8pm).
So if anyone wants to see Burns perform, there are more options.
I'm curious what grosses will look like in the upcoming absence, but I'm also thinking...does this mean that even with the u/s on, the math comes out that they're not losing so much that cancellation is a better decision? Huh.

I'm assuming tickets for Jackie are selling pretty well. There are probably a good number of people who either want a different take on the show or are fans of Jackie. You also have that group that simply doesn't prefer Idina in the roll, or in general. Plus you already have a number of tickets that have already been sold.
I think If/Then doesn't want to give the impression of no Idina no show, so if they can cover the nights' costs with Jackie, it's worth saving face. To me, if a musical is canceling because of the star, it gives off the vibe that nothing else/no one else is worth seeing. Don't think this is true for If/Then. The cast is not short of talent. Burns must also give a nice balance to the show. Idina stirs up so much energy and emotion from the audience that the rest of the cast simply, well, exists. I'm looking forward to seeing the grosses for those weeks as well.

Posted: 9/28/14 at 8:46pmIf/Then has been tweeting and posting on Facebook about the performances that Jackie will be on, offering a special Facebook code. Its probably the same one that they've been using but it's nice to see that they are publicizing Jackie. Wondering how the show will do...

That's not the case according to a cast interview (I think on Sirius XM). LaChanze indicated she was courted over dinner by Greif when the show was still called "If" and both Menzel and Rapp said the role was written for LaChanze.

Yeah, as was noted above, LaChanze explicitly said in an interview that the part was offered to her old school by Greif and David Stone long before the show went into production. According to that same interview, I believe of the 4 principles, James Snyder was the only one not involved from the show's embryonic phases.
