all that jazz, you are right!

And it's not only about race, also about dumb blondes, gays, macho's, etc, etc.

If you takes jokes like that personally, you don't really understand life and people.

The real problem arrives when you try to turn a light and humorous discussion into a serious social statement, which is not, IMO. Like I said before, I'm very excited for this film and I'm happy they're updating it since we already have two more film adaptations of the same beloved musical.

Well put JAZZ

"If you takes jokes like that personally, you don't really understand life and people."

It could be argued that if you don't see how jokes like that are offensive and destructive, you don't really understand life and people.

Reginald, I think casting directors/producers should be open to anything that fits the story and take the best people.
That's why I love that they cast Audra McDonald as Grace, because she was amazing. She was probably the best at the auditions, and was probably up against a white girl or whatever.
I'm not sure about the historic backgrounds of les Mis, but I think a black Eponine could work very well. Time/historic facts/places are the only reason of excluding races in casting in my opinion.

There have been black Eponines and plenty of other black actors on Les Mis, most notably Norm Lewis in the 25th anniversary concert. The show itself has a reputation for color blind casting.

Well, as a black man I don't feel offended by any of the jokes in this thread... though I also contributed to most of them, so I'm sure that says a lot about me.

I wish they had done a new film version of The Wiz instead. The TV version of Annie was pretty good whereas they could still improve upon something like The Wiz.

There are so many movie musicals that I wouldn't mind remakes of… Mame, A Chorus Line, etc. But there are also those which I think should be left alone… The Sound of Music, Fiddler on The Roof, West Side Story.

So true. Thank you for, as usual, being a voice of reason.

Dave, you're an embarrassment in every way possible, except for maybe white supremacists, they must be proud of you.
All that jazz, I get that you're young and probably mean well, but saying that just because we're talking about race, racist jokes will inevitably come out is not only an ignorant statement but a dangerous one. And it's sad that you can't understand why this is not a joke for people who are not like you, who don't view the world from where you see it. There are little girls of color, like Qwuevenzhane, who grew up never seeing an iconic American character like little Orphan Annie, who looked like them; this isn't an inevitable joke to them. The joke is that if this project was announced starring Elle Fanning and Hugh Jackman, at no point would their whiteness be an issue that provokes jokes and humor. I can bet you no one would accuse the production of being "cheap" and "ghetto" and absolutely no one would start making cracks about how whitebread the production is.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

The only time I've ever seen something decried as being too whitebread was when Roundabout announced that they were reviving The Real Thing and Dinner With Friends. But then, Roundabout is the theatrical equivalent of mayonnaise on Wonder Bread.

Would we be more receptive to this if it was a stage production instead of film?

Not if previous threads about non-traditional casting are any indication.

Ray, I'm thrilled they're making this film and I'm all for Annie being black, just as I was when Disney made The Princess and the frog. I want to make clear that I'm not a racist person, at all. I'd never call this production cheap or ghetto, I agree that we should have more iconic black characters for children to look up to and not just black, but of every race.

The jokes on this thread are not any worse than the ones made by African Americans themselves in stand-up comedy, just as white comedians make jokes about being too white and not being hip enough. A respectful, open-minded person is able to laugh at both.

Allthatjazz... sorry to say it but it was inevitable that you would get in the crosshairs of the overly PC overly sensitive bullies on this board Shake it off and don't let it get you down. Sometimes the old saying is true. Those who preach tolerance are often the most intolerant . They do it oly to feel better about themselves and superior

Who are you to judge the jokes African Americans make about themselves in stand-up comedy?

Who are you to suggest that African American people on this board should be offended while they clearly say they are not?

Don't you see what you are doing? You might feel nobel, but actually you are the opposite.

While I hate the idea of Jamie Foxx in the "Annie" remake as much as the next person, hopefully the following information/articles will help stanch some of the ignorance flooding this thread.

Wikipedia Article on Micro-aggressions

"Microaggression is the idea that specific interactions between those of different races, cultures, or genders can be interpreted as mostly non-physical aggression coined by Chester M. Pierce[1] in 1970. Micro-inequities and micro-affirmations were additionally named by Dr. Mary Rowe of MIT in 1973, in her work she also describes micro-aggressions inclusive of sex and gender. Sue et al. (2007) describe microaggressions as, “brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microaggression

Unmasking Racial Micro-aggressions

""It's a monumental task to get white people to realize that they are delivering microaggressions, because it's scary to them," he contends. "It assails their self-image of being good, moral, decent human beings to realize that maybe at an unconscious level they have biased thoughts, attitudes and feelings that harm people of color."

I'm not telling anyone else they should be offended; I'm saying that I'm offended.

You don't have to be a member of the targeted group--blacks, women, Jews, etc.--to object to derogatory language. And I don't think that reaction is something I have to get over.

It's a free country; you can say what you want. And I get to it have my reaction to and respond if I care to.

Blactor, thanks for the article.

The problem is, that every single person can choose to be offended or to see things in perspective.

Because you can never conrol every detail, movie, person, word in the world, it is everyone's own journey on how to handle things yourself.

I remember when the Princess and the frog came out, and hell broke loose because Tiana was going to be a "maid". So after a lot of fuss, the Disney company decided to change the script and make her a hard working woman/princess. I feel the complaints are completely ungrounded, and that the problem is inside some people's head's and that's what needs to be fixed. Not the film.
The biggest part of these micro-aggressions are created by the receiver itself, and that's where the problem lies.

It's a Disney film for god's sake. Does anyone really think it would have mattered if she was a maid? That Disney meant anything even remotely racist with it? No. It's just in your mind. And completely unfair, because it gives off the message that only white girls can be a maid, or that black girls can only be princesses, or other ungrounded twisted things.

It shocks me on a daily basis that I see situations where someone calls: "That's racist!" while it isn't even remotely racist. It's in their mind. It's a serious problem. Searching for the solution in yourself is better than always blaming the big bad world. Having a black character in a Disney film being a maid is NOT racist.

There were also many other completely crazy and ungrounded racist comments and youtube video's about people finding it racist that Tiana's love interest in the film was not black. Can you tell me how that is racist?
Those comments send out a sick message into the world.
