I was there last night as well. I was wonderful seeing her up there. I was having a hard time paying attention to the show itself while she was up there. Seeing her say the word suprecali...( I'm not going to attempt it) live was worth the price of admission for me. Honestly, the kids didn't bother me as much as I thought they would. I enjoyed Lisa Howard's fact for the little kid wearing jeans which went something like "as he left the house tonight wearing his jeans and sneakers he said to his mom, its only a spelling be not a broadway show!". Overall it was an amazing night.
hehe, yeah even when she went back to her seat, I kept glancing between the stage and her reactions. But yeah, especially when she was on the stage, all you could do was watch her.
Okay Skittles, I have an important question for you. Why do you think in this "backwards" supercali...did they keep all the letters in tact within the original bits (dociousaliexpi, etc) but then just switched the letters to end in rupus? Because it was fairly easy to get through/pronounce, wasn't that different with the letters switching?
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
You'd think she would have worked on that word - everyone here knew they were going to give it to her!
Right. There's nothing spontaneous about Julie Andrews' public persona. I believe she, for whatever reason, deliberately mis-spelled the word. After all, if you had a song written for you, wouldn't you know how to spell its title?
I was wondering the same thing myself, JB2. Perhaps she misspelled deliberately in order to keep the focus on the show itself and not on her? It sounds like if that were the case, it didn't work.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)
Let me rephrase: "...in a modest, vain attempt to keep the focus on the show itself..."

Speaking of writing songs (well, I was speaking of it), I wonder why Julie didn't get more into composing. The only song she ever composed, published at least, was the theme to her early 70s variety show. I always like it.
Isn't the goal to get the spellers to mess up, though? I've heard stories about obscure words being spelled correctly, but the words are so long and difficult that no one would know the difference the cast can say it's wrong anyway, just to get the person off-stage. If they keep spelling correctly, they stay up there too long. I wouldn't be surprised if (for the sake of the show, for comedy's sake, whatever) she was supposed to do it wrong. Unlike the regular spellers, her presence up there seems like it was very much part of the performance, and not quite manipulative audience participation in the sense of the cast playing a trick on its guest. Seems like she was a performer in the show last night more than anything else.
and well I guess it's an easier show to talk during so that wasn't annoying...
An easier show to talk *during*? Isn't the point of Kids Night is that it's to expose kids to the theatre? And one of the 'rules' of being a good audience member is you don't talk during a show... the people in front of me were doing so. much. talking. that I finally shushed them during the "I Love You Song," so that I could actually hear the song itself. So was I in the wrong there?
Of course you're not wrong. I was going to the theater, at a very young age; and, I never dreamed of speaking during the show. Of course, the world is different today, than when I was a kid; and, if children need to be reminded of what is expected, then so be it. The worst thing that you can do, is treat their talking as perfectly acceptable behavior.
Actually, while she was spelling, she seemed a bit nervous. I think she was so worried about spelling it correctly that she lost her train of thought and left out the i before the a. Anyone notice how crowded it was in the upper aisles? There was a bit of press there.
What an amazing experience last night! While I enjoyed the cast(Snow-Wilson really surprised me) , my whole focus was on Julie. She not only looked fantastic but was luminous! As Liotte posted in another thread, her people wanted her off after the first word. That, I trulley don't understand! Either way, it was magical to say the least!
I watched her the entire time (was the rest of the cast even in the show last night?), I was behind her and to the right and could see her reactions. She really seemed to enjoy the show! And I was sad that her people wanted her out first, but I knew that in advance, so I wasn't disappointed when she lost.
broadwayworld is crediting a "Rory Malley" as playing Barfee last night in their photo coverage....but that isn't true...the pictures are of Jerad Gertner -- and Rory O'Malley covers him, but was not on last night.....
