yikes...glad i wasn't there tonight! both Karen and Josefina are out? Josefina was in perfect voice last night...so strange. I hope they are all well enough to attend the CD signing at Barnes and Noble tomorrow...
And Angela hasn't missed a show, right? Yes, people get sick, but Some or all of these people performed on the TONYS and were seen at parties after the TONYS, I tried not to harp on this again but if you can't take the Fire Get Out of the Kitchen. I have No Respect for performers who let down their audiences. This is not The Little League Kids.
So Tony winner Karen Olivo should not have performed on the Tonys and should have went straight home to bed after WINNING? Give me a break. If Karen was a shirtless 20 year old male you would be VERY forgiving.
Jeeze. No I wouldn't. I still blame Prince The Daily News said he was dancing her up at the Party. I was also talking about the long list of absentees.
There's this flu going around. But it's the kind of flu you don't want to talk about unless you want to scare people out of your theaters. Maybe that's it?
sorry, but if I went to any show and saw EIGHT( understudies on, I'd be pretty pissed off.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
I attended this evening's performance and I couldn't agree more with this: That being said, Karen's understudy, Yanira Marin, was truly awful, and it made me appreciate Karen's Anita even more (I would not have voted for her to win the Tony Award). While it is a fact that Karen cannot dance the role, Yanira cannot dance, act or sing the role! "America" was even more lackluster than I had remembered it, and one of the girls even stepped out of formation for a split second. The audience of mostly tourists didn't seem to care though, and still went crazy after the number was over. "A Boy Like That" was horrendous. Yanira was pretty much yelling the song, and it just didn't work at all. Also, the rape scene did not pack a punch like when Karen is acting in it. Yanira screamed her songs, yet could not let out any blood curling screams during the rape scene...I was so disappointed.
She was simply atrocious, and did as WAT said in his post: Screamed "America", was pitchy and all over the place during "A Boy Like That" and the rape scene has next to no emotion whatsoever. My friend and I had gotten standing room and just stood there in shock and couldn't believe what we had just witnessed during the usually fabulously done number. Early on when we had been looking into partial view balcony seats, I asked if Karen was out, could we get our money back to which the box office woman cut me off mid-sentence and told me "I sell the performance, not the performer." Despite my dislike of the understudy, the rest of the people in audience seemed to like her and gave her a decent amount of applause come curtain call.
I love Haley Carlucci as Maria and she was truly the shining moment in a really lackluster performance of understudies! John Arthur Greene was really bland and seemed to have next to no personality which Cody gives to the character, plus his vocals and acting were sub par compared to Cody.
Manuel Santos added a lot more anger to Chino as apposed to how Joey Haro portrays him which was actually kind of refreshing to see.
Overall, I still love the show and Haley and Matt (despite his acting looking like a crazed caveman, tonight) really made up for the atrociousness of the Anita understudy. I really hope Karen is resting up to make a fierce return to the Palace soon!
"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.
Again I am wondering why they didn't put on Kat Nejat.
Thank you for your thoughts. I really hope Karen is back soon. Random question: does the understudy wear her hair down like Karen?
I thought John Arthur Greene was A LOT better than Cody Green. That could also be because both times I saw Cody, I was sitting in the balcony. I saw John from the front row.
Ps. I know you did standing room. But are balcony partial view seats still $24.00? Updated On: 6/11/09 at 02:39 AM

Jesus. You'd have to be really, really bad to have your vocals and acting be sub par compared to Cody Green!
EIGHT understudies? Wow....that must be some sort of record! I don't care what show that's for, I don't think I'd be too happy if I weree the average theater goer.
I wonder if they are indeed sick or if perhaps they had another committment AS the cast of WSS?? And if they ARE sick -- oh, my, what a shame.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Please, ljay! Your fanatical devotion is disturbing. Why does she have to be sick? Why can't you entertain the idea that she probably called out for personal reasons? Or maybe she just doesn't feel obligated now that she has her Tony?

I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of Olivo's, but sometimes it's nice to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Why can't you entertain the idea that she's probably actually sick?
and for the people commenting on eight understudies, aren't at least two of them on because the actors who normally play those roles are on for another role? I know six actors out is still a lot, but that kind of shift seems normal when you think about it.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.
