I remember talking to an usher before the performance started and asked him: Do you, by any chance, know if they plan to release an OBC recording? He said: I hope not! I began to panic and think " OMG! What am I going to see?!" Hahaha Yeah; it was bad, but I still would have loved the cd. Oh, well."

Pretty unprofessional behaviour to put people off before the show

I enjoyed myself at the show. High art it is not. But I was very entertained. Maybe they just haven’t quit fixed the show and therefore there’s no cast album? I mean, they can’t really tour it or license it out to other theaters as the show is the puppet. Maybe they should work with Cirque and create a 90min streamlined version.

This, of course, is the obvious question. But nothing ceases to amaze me anymore. There is not a memorable song in the brief score - the lyrics are risible, the "tunes" derivitive and awful. Otherwise, sure go spent 300K on a recording. Why not? They've already spent 35 mil on the show. As to those who recommend it because of the puppet - glad I'm not your friend because I would kill you. :)

Not everyone can make it to New York. A cast recording allows them to encounter it (often for the first time) at least in some way for themselves.

Like SouthernCakes, I actually enjoyed KK too. I wish they at least recorded the version of Queen of New York from the show, because if I'm being honest, it's one of my favorite opening numbers of that season—at least, from what I've seen in person. (I don't watch every show that comes out)

Why would anyone want a recording of this? The music was insultingly bad. Let it just be forgotten.

Cast recordings for flop shows are often seen as investments; if you make a cast recording, theatres are much more likely to license it. But who is going to license King Kong, when it would be virtually impossible to achieve from a technical standpoint? Unless they begin renting out the puppet along with the rights. But even then, I doubt any company has the resources for that.

And even if you just look at it from a consumer perspective, without taking licensing into account, it seems like interest in the music would be fairly low. Because the music is not what anyone cared about when it came to this show. It was the puppet. So if the cast recording can't capture what was effectively the ONLY draw of the show, what's the point?

Me too. All I've got is an audio rip from the promo video, but I'd like an authentic cast recording of that song.

Do you think this might lead to the show being filmed (I don't mean turned into a movie--a live performance recorded)? Surely the producers are going to want to make more off their investment than a one-time-only run?

Maybe. I do think the best candidates for filming are ones where the visuals are more important than the music or book. And this one definitely fits the bill. And I would definitely say this should would be captured better on film than on a cast album.

That said, I'm still not sure it would be enough. There is already footage on the internet of the puppet - and if someone has seen that footage, and been impressed by it, I doubt that seeing the full show would do anything to make them any more impressed. For me, the magic was seeing it live, and being in the same room with the puppet. When Kong came down the apron toward the end of the show, I got chills, and I found myself holding my breath.

Not true.

SARAVA was never recorded.

No, they don't. They cost money to make, and some producers are willing to shell it out for poorly received shows in hopes that copies sell as a reference for future regional and community productions (like Getting the Band Back Together).
"

This. Same is true for TUCK EVERLASTING. Why would a show -- which I really liked BTW -- that lasted a month make a recording other than primarily for the show's regional life.

I would have liked a cast album but it seems like if this show is to have a future they may have to start over from scratch... again.
